Everything was black. She felt like she was floating, but she couldn’t see be able to tell. Am I dead, she wondered? Is this what that is?
“No Kagome, you’re not dead,” said a woman’s voice. Kagome tried to look around, but still couldn’t see anything.
“Where am I?” she asked.
“You are within the Shikon No Tama.” With those words, the world burst into light. Kagome threw an arm over her eyes to protect them from the blinding light.
“Remove your arm, Kagome. It won’t hurt.” She moved her arm away from her face. In front of her was a beautiful woman wearing traditional miko robes. There was something so familiar about her, but she dn’tdn’t place her finger on it.
“Who are you?” she asked.
“I am the heart of the Shikon No Tama. But in life I was known as Lady Midoriko.” Kagome gasped softly. Now she knew why this woman looked so familiar.
“I am also the same voice that spoke to you when you were a little girl. I’ve watched you grow up Kagome. And I am so proud of you. Of all the incarnations that guarded me, you are the strongest one to ever be born. And the bravest. It has been an honor to watch you grow. And it has been my honor to grant your wish.”
“My wish!” she cried out. “Did it work? Please tell me it worked!” Lady Midoriko smiled gently.
“Yes child it worked. You banished all of Naraku’s evil from the world. Do you want to see what your wish had done?” Kagome nodded. Lady Mido wao walked over and gently placed a hand over her eyes.
Kagome watched as Shippo was born and raised by his father. She watched as the Thunder Brothers came along, but without the power of the Shikon No Tama shards, his father was able to defeat them. She wept as she watched her son grow to be a fine young man. She laughed when he began to court the woman that he eventually mated. And she was overjoyed to see him raising his own kits along with his mate. She watched him holding his newest kit as the image faded.
Miroku was born to a pair of loving parents. They moved to a small village of demon exterminators. His parents made friends the parents of Sango. The two grew up together, completely inseparable. Kagome laughed as Miroku was rewarded with a smack in the head when he stole his first kiss from her. She giggled as she watched them red face and embarrassed confess their love to each other. When he finished his monk training they married and had two beautiful children. She wept with joy as she watched Kohaku grow up and become the most successful exterminator in all of Japan. As it moved onto the next scene, she saw Sango and Miroku, old and gray, holding hands watching the sunset.
She watched Kouga fight his way to the top of all the wolf packs in Japan without the help of the Shikon shards. He became the Lord of all wolf youkai and eventually mated with Ayume. Her final vision of Kouga was him watching the moon as he and his pups howled together.
She watched Kaede grow from a sweet little girl into a beautiful woman. Without the sadness of her sister’s death clouding her life, she was much quicker to smile and laugh. When she finally accepted her suitor’s proposal of marriage, Kagome’s heart swelled with joy. The last thing she saw was Kaede’s husband kissing her after the birth of their child.
And finally she watched Inuyasha meet Kikyo and fall in love. She watched as Kikyo handed him the Shikon No Tama and he wished to become a human. His wish was granted and they were married a few days later. He lived out his life with her, never regretting the wish he had made. She laughed as she watched him try to teach his son to fight. He was darling little boy with an attitude just like Inuyasha’s and it was thoroughly enjoyable to see him get frustrated the way she used to. The nephew I will never know, she thought sadly. The last she saw of her best friend was him and Kikyo smiling over their first grandchild.
Lady Midoriko removed her hand from Kagome’s eyes. She immediately burst into tears and knelt on the ground weeping as though her heart would break. After a moment she felt a hand on her shoulder.
“Do you regret the choice that you made, Kagome? Is that why you cry?” she asked worriedly.
“Not a bit,” replied Kagome. “I knew I was making the right choice the moment I decided that would be my wish. You showing me all this just shows me that I was right. I’m crying because I’m so happy for them, but I’ll never be able to let them know how happy I am for them. Lady Midoriko, what about Sesshoumaru?” A frown crossed the miko’s face.
“I don’t know, child. When he broke the barrier, he touched you at the moment you made your wish. He somehow changed things. I wish I knew how. Every time the jewel has been used to make a wish all the rules have been followed. The person was alone and protected by my shield. I’m afraid I don’t know what the results will be. He is hidden from my eyes.”
Kagome nodded, a hand going to her lips. Her first kiss and it had never even existed. She laughed softly, amazed by the sheer absurdity. Once upon a time she had thought Hojo would be her first kiss. Then she met Inuyasha and had spent months dreaming of it being him to give her first kiss. And after awhile she hadn’t even thought of it at all. To have Sesshoumaru of all people be the one. And now it didn’t even matter. Her breath caught in her throat and she turned around.
“Lady Midoriko,”she said. “What will happen to me?” The miko looked at her and burst into laughter.
“Kagome, why are you asking this now? Why not before you made the wish?”
“It didn’t matter. It still doesn’t matter. I wanted everything to be all right no matter what the cost. I still do. I just…want to know what will happen to me now. Will I even exist?” Kagome looked away, trying to hide her fear.
“Kagome, before I explain what will happen to you, there are a few things that you must understand. They first one being that you changed history. Many things that should have happened did not. There is no doubt that you changed it for the better. But in wishing for those things to not have happened, you changed what should have been. I only showed you what happened to your friends, but they were not the only people that were affected by the actions of Onigumi, and then later Naraku.”
Lady Midoriko put her hand back over Kagome’s eyes. She watched a young noble woman fall in love with one her finance’s servants. The two ran away together and started a family. The hand was removed from Kagome’s eyes.
“Kagome, that servant was your ancestor. Originally, Naraku killed the young noblewoman and he eventually married another peasant like himself. By ridding the world of Naraku, he was able to marry his love, but he had children with a different woman than your ancestor. He also had the children years before he did with the peasant woman. You changed your future. There will be no one born known as Kagome Higurashi.”
“Oh no, Mama and Grandpa and Souta,” she cried out in horror. She covered her face with her hands. Why didn’t I think she asked herself?
“Don’t despair yet, child. I still have more to tell you. The second thihat hat you must know is that your wish was the only wish ever made that was entirely selfless. Do you understand what that means, child? People that used the jewel used it for their own betterment. Except you.” She placed her hand under Kagome’s chin and raised it up to look her.
“You made a wish knowing that it was most likely going to negate your own existence. But you still made it. You came here and instead of asking what will happen to you, the first you wanted to know was did the wish work. And even knowing that you will never see the people that you love again, you did not regret it. And even when being told how you have changed your own future, your first concern is not of yourself, but of your family. You are a very special girl, Kagome, and it is for this reason that Kami have taken a special interest in what you did.”
“The Kami,’ she said, awestruck. Lady Midoriko nodded. She smiled as she held out a hand and helped Kagome to her feet.
“Yes, child the Kami. They are quite pleased with what you did and decided that for giving your wish to the world instead of yourself, you will be taken care. The Higurashi family will still exist, including your mother, grandfather, and brother. However, Souta will be an only child.”
“That’s fine as long as I didn’t harm them at all,” she stopped as Lady Midoriko placed her hand to her lips.
“Hush child, I have more to tell. Now as far as you go, Kagome Higurashi is unable to exist. But, you will still exist. What happens to a soul when the body dies child?”
“It reincarnates,” she answered. Her eyes widened as she realized what the miko was saying.
“Yes. All souls reincarnate. And so will yours. And you will still be the guardian of the Shikon No Tama, although it is doubtful you will ever realize it. As I said, the Kami have taken a special interest in you. They have all ready made plans to take care of you.” She drew Kagome into a hug. “Time is short child. Do you have anymore questions?”
“Will I remember any of this?” she asked hopefully. Lady Midoriko closed her eyes. After a moment she opened and shook her head.
“The Kami have hidden that information from eyes. All I can say is that if they will it to be so, it will.” Kagome nodded and hugged Lady Midoriko tight.
“Thank you,” she whispered softly. The miko hugged her back.
“I am always with you, dear. Even in your new life, I will be with you.” Lady Midoriko stepped away from her. Kagome felt the world start to vanish. The last thing she heard was Lady Midoriko whispering.
“The Kami will reward you child. You will have everything you ever desired…”
