A New Life For Two

Chapter Fourty-Two

Sango was sitting in the nursery rocking Kohaku back to sleep in the chair. Dawn was just now approaching as the girl looked out the window. She turned when someone cleared their throat in the doorway. Kagome was standing there smiling at her. "Morning."

"Morning, you don't look like you got much sleep."

She smiled in truth she had yet to try and sleep. Yusuke just passed out an hour ago. Seemed he decided to make up for the last few months of being apart in one night. Sango knew her hair was a mess and her cheeks were red. "Like you have any room to talk."

"I have no idea what you mean. I got plenty of sleep." Kagome sat on the floor in front of the two. "Its been over a year but it seems much longer than that. Doesn't it?"

"Yes, seems like a life time ago we were running for our lives, chasing Naraku. I never dreamed I'd be here. If anything I pictured myself married to the houshi. Chasing him down after he cheated on me."

"Funny how things work out. Sometimes I wonder if Kikyo told you to take me back on purpose. Did she somehow know that we would find new lifes here? I wish I could thank her. Having you stuck here was the best thing that could have happened." Kagome grabbed her hand. "Thank you for bringing me home and staying with me."

"Your welcome, Kagome. I didn't think I'd make it to the well in time. You are a lot heavier than you look."

"Hey! Its all muscle. Every flabby inch." She flexed causing Sango to laugh.

"Stop you're scaring me. I never thought I'd see this time. I always wondered what was so special about it." Sango leaned back. "I remember being truly scared a few times in my life."

"Really, I remember being scared an ass load of times back then." Kagome watched as Sango placed the baby back in his crib and sit back down.

"Yes, you seemed to get frightened when I wasn't. Then there were times you appeared fearless while I would have been scared out of my mind."

"What times were those?"

"For example when the looking glass had Inuyasha's human side captured and he was transforming right before us. Miroku and I were powerless to stop it. Yet, you put yourself in harm's ways to stop him. I never could understand what was going through your mind." Sango blushed.

"Would you do it for Yusuke?"

"Yes, I think I would. Not sure if I would have gone through with it the same way as you."

"All I did was kiss him," Kagome lifted her finger in the air. "And after what I heard earlier, I'd say you've done more than kiss Yusuke. Not to mention the little guy playing not far from us."

"Thats not what I meant and you know it." She was thinking more along the lines of Hiraikotsu and the top of his skull. "There's a question I've always wanted to ask. That day Kouga kidnapped you, what all happened between you two?"

"Nothing, I swear. After I helped Shippo escape he just suddenly decided that I was to be his woman. Must have been my pearly whites." She grinned up at the girl.

"Please don't do that, it's scary. Makes me think you are going to start singing."

"Wow, great idea. We can sing the baby asleep." She pointed to the tiny hands waving in the air.

"No," Kohaku started crying once more.

"See, he wants his mom to sing him to sleep. Party Pooper. How bout you sing him to sleep and I'll just listen." Kagome picked the boy up. "Isn't that right little man either momma sings or I do." He blinked at her. Sango got up to let her sit in the rocking chair.

Kagome started humming, Sango stood up and looked out the window. When Kagome picked up her voice some she cringed. "Okay, Okay. Just hush."

Kagome gave the boy a wink. Sango cleared her throat. 'What to sing?' She wouldn't sing anything like Kagome would. Swearing at her child wasn't kosher.

"She sounds a lot better than you," Kurama startled both of them. He'd woken up when Yusuke walked into the kitchen muttering. He'd joined his friend in the kitchen for a cup of coffee. They could hear the girls speaking but gave them time alone. They didn't speak just sat at the table listening. (Being nosey)

Kurama had to admit when Kagome had threatened to sing, he was thinking about taking a morning walk suddenly. When Sango agreed instead he was prepared for another ear piercing performance. But her voice had been soft, very pleasant. Yusuke didn't say anything, just sat there with a wistful look in his eyes. Kurama felt like kicking the boy to remove that look off his face.

Kagome pouted at the comment. "I'm good at other things I'll have you know."

"Like what?" He teased.

"I'll show you later." She smiled when he blushed this time.

Yusuke came in but ignored those two. He went straight for Sango and wrapped her in his embrace. "Come back to bed. Get some sleep."

Sango let him pull her back into the bedroom, she wouldn't be getting any sleep.
