A Love That Transcends Time: Book I

Inuyasha was flying as fast as he could to be at her side. The moment he reached her, he too her in his arms only to slide through her.



"Kagome, Kikyou's gone now and I didn't go with her. This is our chance, just let me wish on the Shikon no Tama and--"



Kagome lifted a finger in front of his lips to silence him.



"No, Inuyasha. Listen to me. This is the way it has to be. It's as Midoriko-sama says: the world--my world--is in danger. We are the only ones who can save it. The wish to be made on the Shikon no Tama is not to be used in this time but in mine. This is the only way to ensure we have a fighting chance against what's coming,"



Incredulous, Inuyasha shook his head and ran his fingers through his hair in frustration.



"No! This is not the way it's supposed to be. You should be here with me, right now. Alive and breathing. And if you think you'll stop me from making that come true, then think again,"



Kagome stepped away from him, sadness there in the way she looked at him. But a beautiful smile lingered on her lips.



"I always knew you were stubborn, but that's one of the things I love about you. So don't give up on me, Inuyasha. Don't give up on what we have and could have. Find me again, love. I have no doubt in my mind that you will. And once we're together again, I promise you that nothing and no one can ever separate us. I swear it. I won't give up on us too, love. I'll be waiting for you--forever, if need be. Trust in Midoriko-sama, she knows what to do. Aishiteru,"



Kagome said as her spirit slowly dissipated. Inuyasha desperately tried to hold her before she slipped away, but it was in vain.



"Dammit, Kagome, come back! You are not leaving me again, do you hear me? I'm not letting you go, Kanai,"



But she couldn't hear any more, her soul dissolving into nothingness. Inuyasha could only bow down his head in defeat and in sorrow.



"Do not worry. Her soul is not gone. It has returned to its' rightful time and place. You will see her again, I promise you,"



Midoriko said fervently as she reached out her hand to Inuyasha. Inuyasha looked at it before looking her straight in the eyes before he took it.



"She told me to trust you, so I will. You are the only means I have of seeing her again. And I won't be denied. Tell me what I have to do,"



Midoriko gifted him with a grateful smile.



"I thank you, Inuyasha. As I have said before, the world as we know it is in danger in the far future. The jewel speaks of an evil force so powerful it could wipeout the entire human race--not to mention also be the cause of youkai extinction. The only hope we have lies on the Shikon no Tama,"



She turned to face all of them, including the demon lord.



"That is why this is for all of you--for all of us. The world's fate lies in our hands. We must prepare ourselves with everything we have,"



"Sango and Miroku... this is not the time and place for you also. I know that you have only begun to discover the depth of your feelings for each other, and that I'm asking a lot out of you. But I have no choice, my children. Will you help me once again?"



The houshi and the taijiya looked deep into each other's eyes for what seemed like eternity. All the unspoken feelings and promises were given in that soulful exchange.



"It is with great honor that we will serve you again, my lady. Please command us,"



Midoriko smiled at them gratefully once more before facing Sesshomaru.



"What of you, demon lord? Do you also pledge yourself to our cause?"



Sesshomaru never blinked once as he looked at her, his expression inscrutable.



"As this is something that concerns the youkai race, then I am honorbound to do so. My brother is also with you, so there is no question of this Sesshomaru's allegiance,"



Midoriko bowed her head solemnly, her gratefulness apparent.



"Then we do not have a moment to lose. I suggest you say your goodbyes here and now. You will not be seeing one another for a very long time,"



Her words puzzled them, but they did as she asked. The miko and the taiyoukai walked away quietly to give them privacy.
