Chapter 1, Part IV - First Day On the Job
"I knew you were special the moment I smelled you. Who knew I'd find someone exquisitely delectable tonight? My powers will increase once I drink your blood,"
The 'thing' came after her again in a blur, his movements too fast for the naked eye to see. Kagome was bracing herself to blast him away again, but she was too late. Before she knew it, one hand was wrapped around her throat as he lifted her effortlessly, like a ragdoll in a child's hold. He bared those gleaming fangs at her and Kagome closed her eyes, knowing her end was near. She couldn't even scream for someone to help her, and the feeling of helplessness and despair consumed her. He was about to strike when an arrow imbedded itself on the hand that held Kagome aloft.
He screamed in pain, letting Kagome fall to the ground. She was clutching at her throat, coughing violently. She saw the hand that was hit by the arrow disintegrating slowly through her watery eyes. Whatever that arrow was made of could hurt the son of a bitch like hell.
She felt rather than heard another woman's presence behind her. Kagome watched as the tall woman stepped between her and the 'thing'. She held a crossbow in one hand and sported a real bad-ass boomerang in the other. The light of the moon struck her weapons and they glinted ominously in the dark. She was wearing an all-black leather ensemble, and no matter how cliche it looked like, Kagome almost wept as she realized help was here.
"You!"
The 'thing' was really baring his fangs in anger now, and started circling them slowly, like a predator with its' prey. The woman never took her eyes off 'it', but she never changed her stance either.
"You're either too stupid or too desperate to do your shit on my town. Thought I wouldn't go hunting tonight, vampire?"
The woman asked in a bored tone of voice. Vampire! So that's what it was. How many legends were actually real, Kagome wondered. The vampire made a hissing sound before focusing his eyes on the still dazed miko on the ground. The woman in black took it all in one sweep. She shook her head condescendingly.
"I wouldn't try that if I were you,"
The vampire whipped its' head back to the woman, surprised at her words.
"I can hear your small brain whirring all the way here. And no, you haven't got a chance in hell. You are not touching her again. Do I make myself clear?"
This time the woman said it in a downright hard and mean tone of voice. But the vampire stood its' ground, getting ready to attack anytime now. Instinctively, Kagome pushed back to her feet determinedly, not wanting to go down without a fight.
"I can help. Tell me what to do,"
"The way you are now, you'll be more hindrance than help. Just get behind me. Are you any good with a crossbow?"
The woman didn't even bother to look behind her as she spoke. She didn't dare look away from the vampire who was crouching before her. Kagome hated to disappoint her, but she hated lying even more.
"To tell the truth, this is the first time I'm ever going to use one, if you're planning on handing it over. But I'm great with bows and arrows,"
"Shoot anything that blurs before you. Got that?"
The woman said as she handed Kagome the crossbow. As soon as he saw the ranged weapon out of the woman's hand, the vampire attacked. He leapt--in Kagome's eyes it looked like he flew--over them, his deadly hands ready to do damage. The woman quickly maneouvered the boomerang atop their heads, repelling the vampire's descent on them. She then pushed the boomerang with all her might, sending the vampire flying some distance away from them. He landed on his feet, but before he could launch another attack, the woman was already throwing her boomerang his way.
"Hiraikotsu!"
The vampire had no choice but to dodge the boomerang's attack, bending backwards to avoid being cut in half. The woman didn't give him the chance to recover as she ran unhumanly fast towards him, her sword already drawn. Kagome watched in amazement--or tried to, actually--at the ridiculously fast-paced battle that was going on in front of her. She felt like she was watching with the super fast forward command on.
They were still battling when the vampire noticed he's lured the woman away from his prey. Almost cackling in glee, the vampire used its' superhuman speed to charge at Kagome.
"You lose, huntress,"
The vampire taunted the woman in a sing-song tone of voice before reaching for Kagome. She automatically fired the crossbow, hitting the vampire full on the chest. He still couldn't believe his eyes despite the pain that lanced through his chest.
"Did I?"
The 'huntress' asked coldly, and the only warning was the whistle in the air as the boomerang returned to cut the vampire's head from its' body. The woman expertly caught the boomerang before it sliced through Kagome as well. The vampire already turned to dust before he even hit the ground.
