The Awakening, Part One
Well, well, well, it’s that time once again. I’m in school, so there may be a bit of a wait in between chapters. That being said, I want to once again thank all of you who have read the story and reviewed so far. I greatly appreciate it.
Also, I want to say that it may take a couple of chapters for things to really start between Sesshomaru and Rin. They will start to get to that point soon, but the direction I’m going in is…..well, I don’t wanna ruin it, so just know that everything in the story happens for a reason.
So now that we’re all on the same page, Let’s Get It Started!
Disclaimer: I do not own anything in the Inuyasha franchise; it all belongs to Viz Media, Sunrise, etc. In addition, I don’t make any money off of this story; it is merely a work of fiction I have written to entertain myself and fans of this amazing series.
Chapter Four: The Awakening, Part 1
The daylight shone brightly as the sun rose to its position high up in the sky. As the light made its way through the doorway of the hut, it cast itself on all of the sleeping figures inside the small house, waking one of them with a start. She slowly opened her eyes, immediately bringing her hand up to shield them from the light. As she picked herself up off the floor, she felt a sharp pain in her stomach. She clutched it, remembering that was where Inuyasha had hit her. That bastard. He didn’t have to hit me. She took a deep breath, and then made her way outside.
Once again, she found herself raising her hand to her eyes to shield them from the sun. As she walked, she thought about what Inuyasha had said to her before they had gone back to the hut. She remembered that he had said that Lord Sesshomaru was okay, which made her relax a little. She decided then and there that if Inuyasha wouldn’t take her to Lord Sesshomaru, she would find him herself. It shouldn’t be that hard. All I’ve gotta do is remember what direction Inuyasha came from last night. Easier said than done, but I think I can manage. As she made her way towards the bushes, she couldn’t help notice the other villagers working in the fields. One of them looked up and, when he saw her near the bushes immediately made his way toward her.
“Is there something I can help you with, Rin?” The man stood in front of her, so that he was between her and the forest.
“I’m just going in the forest to look around. You know, explore.” Rin flashed a smile at the man.
The man stared. “Inuyasha told me specifically to keep you out of the forest.”
Rin gasped. “He told you to keep me out of the forest? Why?”
“He didn’t tell me why, but I got the feeling that what you’d see would upset you and that he didn’t want to put you through that.”
Rin frowned. She wanted to believe the man, but everything in her told her that he was just trying to keep her away from their discovery. She tried to rationalize it, but she just couldn’t bring herself to trust the man.
“Okay, I understand. Thank you for being so considerate.” Rin bowed to the man and turned to leave. The man began to make his way back toward the fields. As soon as the man had moved from in front of the brush, Rin spun around and quickly made her way into the forest. The man saw her run back, but was unable to react in time. Realizing that it was only a matter of time before she found the demon’s body, he ran off to find Inuyasha.
Rin dashed through the underbrush, the branches slapping at her ankles. She had raised her skirt to her knees so she could move better through the forest. As she ran, she could only think to look for something white or pale, something that didn’t look like it belonged in there.
“How could you let her get away from you?” Inuyasha had been sitting in front of his hut with his family, wiping the sleep out of his eyed when the villager who’d found Sesshomaru ran up to them and told him what had happened. He stared at the man with a dumbfounded look on his face.
The man stared down at his feet with a sheepish look on his face “I’m sorry, Inuyasha. I don’t know what to say, she just……outmaneuvered me somehow.”
Inuyasha sighed, placing his head in his hand. I’m surrounded by idiots, he thought.
“If you want me to, I will go into the forest and look for the girl. There’s no telling what that demon we found will do to her if it wakes up.”
Kagome’s head spun at the man’s words. “You found him? You found Sesshomaru?”
“Well, yeah…”
“Well, yeah nothing, Inuyasha. Why didn’t you bring him to the hut?”
Inuyasha opened his mouth to speak but the villager beat him to the punch. “We couldn’t, milady. The demon was a giant dog, almost three stories tall. He would’ve been impossible to carry. Plus, he was badly injured.”
“So you just left him out there?”
Inuyasha shrugged. “Pretty much. Like the guy said, Sesshomaru was in his demonic form and was injured. There was nothing I could do, really.”
“Well, I hate the fact that you just left him out there. You know if Rin finds him, you’re never going to hear the end of it.”
“You’re right. We’ve gotta find her before she finds him.”
As she ran through the forest, Rin began to realize that her legs were beginning to hurt. This made her realize something else. I don’t need to run anymore. I’ve already made it past that man who was trying to keep me out of the forest.
Slowing to a walk, she began to scan the forest. Turning her head side to side, she narrowed her eyes, trying to pinpoint anything unusual, anything that did not belong there. Her eyes did not fail her as they soon pointed out a clearing to the right, where there was a white object that she didn’t recognize.
She slowly made her way towards it, taking care not to be noticed.
As she got closer and closer to the clearing, Rin looked in horror as she came upon the body of a giant dog. It was adorned with bruises all over its body and purple marks around its neck. There was no doubt about it.
Lord Sesshomaru. It’s you.
“How could you do that? How could you just leave him out there, Inuyasha?”
Inuyasha looked at Rin as she went on her mini tirade.
“you don’t know what could happen to him out there. He could catch a cold or get sick or something...”
Inuyasha rolled his eyes. Yeah, like a demon could actually catch a cold. He turned away from her to look at the sun setting in the sky. Staying up all night caused him to sleep most of the day away. He looked fondly as the bright orb made its way below the horizon, adorning the sky with all sorts of blues and reds and creating one of the most beautiful sights Inuyasha had ever seen. He watched the villagers as they made their way to their respective homes. Their scents mixed together in the air, which caused Inuyasha to frown. The smell of humans was not a pleasant one.
Just then, a familiar smell came to his nose. It wasn’t human, and it was close by. Actually, it was right behind him. He whirled around him, trying to find the source of the smell. He moved all around the hut, trying his damnest to find the source of the smell. Everyone looked at him like he was crazy; they couldn’t figure out why Inuyasha was walking around sniffing the air.
Try as he might, he couldn’t pinpoint the smell. Then, the smell was right below him. Inuyasha looked down at his feet. His gaze settled on Jaken’s small frame.
Rin saw Inuyasha’s gaze settle on Jaken. Just as she began to make her way towards them to keep Inuyasha from harming Jaken, she heard a small moan. She looked down at Jaken as his body twitched, then began to move. Jaken’s eyes opened, and he looked all around at the people surrounding him.
His gaze finally settled on the girl who was slowly making her way toward him. He stared in disbelief. “Rin, is that you?”
