~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Kikyo heard Inuyasha’s growl grow in volume. Quietly, she turned to him and sighed.
”Inuyasha, stop that.” Kikyo chastised.
“Who’s Koga?” Kagome whispered to him.
Kagome didn’t receive an answer as Kikyo stepped forward, bowing. The man returned the bow and smiled at her relieved.
“Finally! We were starting to wonder if you weren’t going to show!”
“Why wouldn’t we, ya mangy…!”
”Inuyasha, that’s enough.”
Kikyo’s voice and gaze turned just as cold as the snow falling around them. Inuyasha instantly froze and silenced himself. Kagome had always wondered what sort of control Kikyo had over Inuyasha to just make him…well, shut up like that. Kikyo turned back to Koga, retaining her kindly smile.
“You must forgive my companion. He is short on manners.”
“No problem…! I…”
It was then he noticed her. The other young woman of the group standing there, bow in hand. He couldn’t help but smile at her; of course, Kagome blushed and looked at the ground.
“Priestess Kikyo, could she be your twin?”
Kikyo giggled and looked at Kagome who’d raised her head. He was still smiling at her and maybe it was just the cold, but his cheeks were turning slightly red.
“Okami-San, this is my younger sibling, Kagome. I have decided to bring her with me on this mission, seeing how this is where she starts school tomorrow.”
The look on Koga’s face upon hearing she was a junior high student was a bit priceless in Kikyo’s opinion. Koga seemed to do some mental shrugging off of her age; Kagome was very cute and he couldn’t wait to have her in class.
“It’s nice to meet you, Okami-San…”
“Eh, just call me Koga. All the other students here do.”
Kagome smiled, feeling a bit of the pressure lifted.
“Kagome-Chan, Okami-San here is the gym teacher and vice principal. Believe it or not, his family has been friends with ours for generations!”
“Really?”
“Yep! Your family and I go way back, Kagome!” he grinned.
“Excuse me…I hate to interrupt…”
“What is it, Inuyasha?” Kikyo sighed.
Inuyasha casually pointed to a window.
“How about the fact that the shit in there is flying around?”
Kagome’s eyes widened and her reaction was the same as the other panicked students who were witnessing the event; desks, pencils, papers and books were all violently floating around one of the classrooms. The ground began to shake and the windows shattered one by one. Koga turned, yelling at the students to get back. Large shards of glass rushed at Kagome, Inuyasha and Kikyo, but calmly closing her eyes and with a wave of her hand, Kikyo deflected the glass with a large, purple barrier that covered all three of them. Kagome stared at Kikyo in awe; she never knew her sister had that much power! When the glass stopped falling, Kikyo turned to Koga and the other teachers.
“Please, keep your students off of the campus grounds. With things the way they are, we cannot risk anyone getting hurt.”
”Right, you heard the lady! Back up!” Koga yelled.
The students were hurried out off the school grounds and before long, the front of the school had a barricade in front of it; police had arrived and taped off the entrance to the school. The commissioner even tipped his hat to Kikyo who replied with a small bow and a smile that made the old man’s heart melt.
“Kikyo, how do you know him?” Kagome asked.
”I help his wife deliver his first son when I was fourteen.”
“Your sister has done some pretty amazing things, young lady. Maybe you can learn a few things from her.” The commissioner chuckled.
Kagome sighed in exasperation; not from hearing that same saying over and over again, but because she knew it was true. Inuyasha placed his hand on the sword and looked up at the school as he stood next to Kikyo.
“Well, just like old times, huh?” he smirked.
”Of course. Shall we, Kagome?” Kikyo smiled at Kagome.
“Y…yeah…”
As the three entered the abandoned school, Kikyo looked around cautiously, making sure there weren’t any other students left behind. Inuyasha sniffed the air; his demonic traits may have left when he crossed over to this world, but his demonic ability never failed him.
“I don’t smell a demon…”
“Then it’s more than likely a restless spirit. The glass shattered on the third floor. That is where we need to go.” Kikyo said, heading for the stairs.
”What about Kagome?” Inuyasha asked, turning to look at his lover’s younger sibling.
“What about me?” she huffed.
“Do you want to help with the exorcism?”
“I…”
A cold chill ran down Kagome’s spine as she faintly caught sight of something out of the corner of her eye dash around the corner. She looked up at Kikyo and Inuyasha and shook her head.
“No, I’ll be fine down here. I’ll make sure none of the students try and get back in.”
“Yeah, good idea. Anyway, stay put. This won’t take long.” Inuyasha said, hand on his sword.
“Let us know if you need any help. Inuyasha is right; this shouldn’t take very long.” Kikyo smiled.
Kikyo and Inuyasha headed up the stairs and once Kagome was certain they were upstairs, made her way down the hallway where she was certain someone was. She rounded the corner and came to another empty hallway and sighed.
“I was positive I saw…”
Kagome heard footsteps leading down the right hallway and quickly gave chase, despite the fact she didn’t see anyone. Upon nearing another classroom, she could hear someone crying. Hesitantly, Kagome slid the door to the classroom open, revealing it to be an old library.
“Hello?” Kagome called out.
Kagome entered the library and looked around. After hearing the sound of several books falling behind her, she readied an arrow and turned around, only to see she was aiming the arrow at none other than a student! Not just that, a very handsome student, dressed in a white blouse, black pants and sporting a black tie. Not only that, but he had the most stunning blue eyes she’d ever seen and his short, honey-blonde hair only made him all the more irresistible. She released a small breath and sighed.
“What are you still doing in here, don’t you know that this school is dangerous right now?”
He kneeled down to pick up the books he dropped and gave a small, sheepish smile.
”Sorry…Did I frighten you?”
Against her better judgment, Kagome gave a small smile of her own.
“Only a little.”
“I’m sorry.”
He picked up the books and began to reshelf them carefully, one by one. Kagome stared at him in confusion.
“So, what’s your name?” he asked her.
“K…Kagome Higurashi. Um…what’s yours?”
“It’s Kaibaku; Asahiro Kaibaku.”
”Asahiro-San, I have to ask you why you’re still here…”
“Would you believe I’m hiding here?” he chuckled.
“Well, I could understand that, I guess, but it’s dangerous. People say that this place is haunted and from what I’ve seen, I believe them.”
When he finished putting the books back up, he headed down another aisle. Curious, Kagome followed him, but it was as if he’d vanished into thin air. When Kagome finally found him, he was standing by a window, the sunlight pouring over him as he stared out of the window. She walked by his side.
“What’s wrong?”
“Tell me…do I seem…different to you?”
Kagome looked at him for a minute and shook her head.
“No, are you foreign?”
“No, but people wouldn’t think that. My father was American and my mother was Japanese, but she had black hair and blue eyes. That’s where my features come from. But…”
”But?”
Kagome watched him sit down the soft bench beneath the French-designed window. She sat beside him when she saw him bury his face in his hands.
“People still treat me differently…I hate it.”
As Kagome leaned in to pat him on his back, she caught a glimpse of his wrists. Long scars wrapped around them and her eyes widened in horror.
“Your…your wrists!”
He looked up from his hands and saw the stunned look on her face. He sighed, turning away from her, but was pulled back by his arm to look at her. Her brown eyes were so expressive and full of worry, he was certain the only time he’d seen someone genuinely worried about him was…never.
”Don’t tell me you tried to kill yourself over what someone said, Asahiro-San!” she quickly said.
“Tried to…?” he asked bitterly.
His gaze narrowed at Kagome. It wasn’t possible, but…could she have been…? He gave her the once over, realizing her state of dress.
”I knew it, you’re a priestess, aren’t you?” he asked with an excited smile.
For the first time, Kagome was happy to be acknowledged as such. She gave a nod.
“That’s right. I’m suppose to get rid of whatever it is that’s terrorizing the school.”
“So that means you have all types of spiritual powers and stuff, right? Do you think you can help me?” he asked hopefully.
Kagome nodded quickly. She knew she wanted to do whatever to help ease his pain.
“I’ll do whatever I can, Asahi…”
When he tipped her chin upwards to look at him, a blush covered her cheeks.
“Please, a beautiful priestess like you has to help me. There isn’t anyone else who can; not even Kikyo.”
Kagome’s eyes widened. There was someone who needed her more than Kikyo? She nodded, unsure of what to say. He stood up, his hands holding Kagome’s as she stood up with him.
“Please, tell me what I can do to help you?”
He turned to look out of the window. Kagome wasn’t sure what he kept staring at out there, but he looked pensive whenever he reverted his attention out of the window.
“Kiss me.”
Kagome’s eyes widened and a blush spread quickly across her cheeks.
“Wh…what?”
He turned to face her.
“It’s the only way I’ll ever be able to be free. To know…there was atleast one person who cared for me.”
Kagome looked around quickly before weighing her options; if she kissed him, she’d be helping him out greatly, but at the same time, she had to keep to her duties as a priestess; her sister had given her a job; keep all of the students out the building and wasn’t he a student?
”Asahiro, I…”
He moved closer, wrapping his arms around her waist. With his blue eyes pleading with her, she looked around once more. She wasn’t sure what was coming over her, but she fell into the embrace so naturally, before she even knew it, she was resting her head against her chest and closing her eyes.
“One kiss…that’s it.” She murmured.
He nodded, holding her a little closer.
“I promise. I know that this is sudden for someone you just met, but…”
Kagome nodded her head, but looked up at him with a smile.
“As a priestess, I’m entitled to help someone however I can.”
He nodded with a smile. Gently bracketing her head between his hands, he leaned in to kiss her…
“What the HELL do you think you’re doing?!” a voice bellowed.
Kagome’s eyes flew open and she turned only to see Inuyasha and Kikyo standing there at the entrance to the library. Inuyasha had his sword brandished; he couldn’t have been that mad, could he?
“Inuyasha…! Kikyo…!”
“Kagome, get the hell away from him…” Inuyasha growled.
“But…!”
Kikyo stepped forward with a sigh.
“Kagome, do as Inuyasha says.”
It was then Kagome became uneasy. She looked at Asahiro who was eying Kikyo with pure anger.
”Well, well…Kikyo. It’s been a while.”
Kikyo’s face remained stoic as she undid the cloak covering the large blade. Kagome’s mind was racing.
“Kikyo, stop! What are you doing?”
As if Kagome wasn’t even there, Kikyo continued to stare at the boy holding her younger sister.
“Asahiro, let her go. Final warning.”
“Wait, you two know each other?” Kagome backed away from Asahiro.
It was becoming a bit too much; why did Kikyo always have to have the hottest guys who showed her even the slightest affection? Asahiro released a sharp sigh and ran his hands through his hair.
”Dammit, Kikyo…Why bother me now? You couldn’t help me, Kagome can.”
”Don’t speak as if you know her so intimately.” Kikyo said, voice as cold as ice.
Asahiro turned to look at Kagome with a smug grin.
“I’d actually like the chance to know her a little better.”
“Kagome, get over here…!” Inuyasha growled.
“As a matter of fact,”
With swiftness, Asahiro had Kagome pinned against a bookshelf. Kikyo’s eyes widened, but beyond that, she didn’t show any emotion. Inuyasha on the other hand was livid.
“You bastard…!”
Asahiro tipped Kagome’s chin up with a smirk.
“I’d like to get to know her…inside and out.”
“Don’t you dare…” Kikyo warned.
Kagome’s eyes widened as Asahiro assaulted her lips.
“Bastard…!” Inuyasha growled, charging at him.
His fist was a scant inch away from Asahiro’s cheek before the young man disappeared right before his eyes.
“What the hell…?!”
“Inuyasha…!” Kikyo called to him.
Kagome fell to her knees, her body breaking out into a cold sweat. She couldn’t keep from shivering; it was as if ice had replaced her warm blood.
“Wh…what’s happening to me…”
Before Kagome knew it, an unsettling darkness had taken over her vision.
