Chapter 3: Why do I love you again?

Inuyasha’s nose tickled. He groaned as he felt himself slipping out of his dream. Rubbing a hand groggily over his twitching nose, he attempted to roll over, just to be stopped by a soft fleshy wall that lay in front of him. Still half asleep, he ran his hand up it, until his fingers met short, silky hair, and his eyes shot open. ‘What the hell did I do last night?’

The living barricade that he had since recognized as Miroku rubbed the sleep out of his eyes slowly, and looked over to Inuyasha, who was staring confusedly into space, and moving his mouth as if trying to work something difficult out in his head. He automatically smiled at the cute expression before he caught himself and stopped. He had begun to put on his scattered clothing when suddenly the events of the previous night flooded back into his mind. His smile came back full force, and unbidden. He had slept with Inuyasha, and he’d...liked it? Feeling an all to familiar sensation, he looked down at his robes accusingly. Yes, apparently he’d liked it quite a bit. He looked back up to Inuyasha, who had apparently figured out whatever he had been mulling over.

“I love you! he blurted out, apparently shocked at the news. “What the hell was in that candy?!”

“Love...me? Kami, you’re right Inuyasha. I love you as well,” Miroku replied, in a state of stunned amazement.

An uncomfortable silence followed in which both boys tried desperately to ook anywhere but at each other. Dressing, backs turned on eachother, curiosity finaly got the best of them, as they turned simultaniously and glowing, honeyed amber eyes, met a pair that seemed the color of the sky just before dawn.

“What do you think we should do, Miroku. About this,” Inuyasha said rather distractedly, as he had become caught in Miroku’s beautiful, dark violet-blue gaze.

“It’s not natural...” he whispered softly after a bit, as he brushed a stray stand of Midnight black out of the way of the eyes that were holding him transfixed. “It’s not right.”

Miroku gave the hanyou a small smile, as he held the rough hand to his cheek, that had been gently pushing his hair aside.

“Does it really feel that way to you Inuyasha?” the monk whispered back, as he slowly ran his fingers up the smooth back of Inuyasha’s hand, enjoying the contrast between it, and the rough palm pressed to his cheek.

Inuyasha smiled sweetly, and leaned in to place a slow lingering kiss on Miroku’s lips, as if answering the monk’s question.

“I love you.” Inuyasha told him gently, more sure of himself this time.

“As do I you, Inuyasha, and right now the reason for it doesn’t really matter to me.”

“Lets get back to camp,” Inuyasha said, taking Miroku’s hand. “ Kagome will probably be raving like a looney by now. We’ve been gone all night.”

“Alright.”

The boys headed in the direction of the camp, hand in hand, not worried about the questions this gesture would give rise to. They were, for the first time in a long time, at peace.

Sango paced the camp frantically. Every now and then she threw an anxious glance toward Kagome, who sat quietly on a log near the fire, pale, and staring dully into the orange, flickering, flames. Where were they?

The boys had been gone all night, and she would have been searching now, if she weren’t so concerned for Kagome. The girl had come back from going to retrieve the boys for supper half an hour after she should have, and sat down at the fire, looking like she’d seen a ghost, and not saying a word. She hadn’t moved from that spot since she had arrived.

A rustle in the bushes had Sango darting over, in hopes that her friends had returned, so that she could focus on Kagome’s problem.

Miroku emerged, followed by a peaceful looking Inuyasha. Sango just stood and stared at the pair who were holding hands, and sharing knowing glances that she had only seen lovers give. Not knowing what else to do she walked over to a log near Kagome’s, and sat, before her legs could give out from shock. The boys, noticing the two girls shocked, and sullen demeanors, exchanged anxious glances as they released their clasped hands.

“Inu...Inuyasha,” came the small hollow voice of Kagome. “Inuyasha, do you love him?”

Her voice shuttered frailly, and she took in a deep breath. Regaining her composure, she started in on the hanyou more confidently.

“Look, I have to tell you something. What your feeling for him isn’t real love. It’s love from a potion that you took from my bag. It’s not...real.”

Her voice started to quaver at the last word, as she forced it past the hard lump in her throat, and she looked down to hide the thin, salty tears that slid down her cheeks in twin rivers.

“I know,” the hanyou said calmly, wanting to comfort her, but not knowing how. “We know.”

Kagome’s head snapped up at the words. How could they know, and still be so calm about it? How could they parade their false love around in front of her? How could they?

“I don’t suppose you’ll be wanting the antidote then,” she muttered, defeatedly.

“No Kagome, I’m sorry.”

Sango looked on in shocked silence. A love potion? Miroku...loved Inuyasha. But, he loved her. Didn’t he? Why in god’s name wouldn’t he take the antidote. Sango turned her head towards the miko when she spoke.

“How will you know Inuyasha? How will you know what your actually feeling, and what the potion is making you feel?”

Her voice rose, as her anger flared.

“You may be happy now, but when you’re lying awake at night questioning yourself, your life with him, how will you feel? When you realize you’re not even sure what is real. What will you do then?”

Her voice fell to a dull, broken monotone.

“If you love him, really, you won’t need a potion’s assurance to be happy.”

With that, she turned her gaze back to the fire, letting Inuyasha think about her words, which she left hanging heavily in the air. Pregnant with doubt, and truth.

“I...You’re absolutely right Kagome,” Miroku said quietly, looking sadly into Inuyasha’s eyes. “I don’t want to lose you Inuyasha, but I couldn’t bear living my life with a lie like that hanging over my head.”

“I understand Miroku. I’m pretty sure though, that if we go through with this, you will lose me. I loved Kagome.”

“And I Sango. But who knows these things. A person can’t go through what we’ve been through without forging some kind of bond. I love you now, Inuyasha. You can believe that.”

Inuyasha sighed.

“Alright Kagome, lets go get this antidote you’re so keen on us taking.”

Kagome nodded and stood. Within fifteen minutes they were on their way to Kaede’s, where a new hope waited for Kagome’s unrequited love.

Waffy huh. Yup. I warned you though. If you liked it I like you. If you didn’t like it...I like you anyway. I’m kool like that. Whether you liked it or not, give your opinion by reviewing, and if you have a story I’ll try to return the favor. Love to you all! Byeeeee!

Miroku: ( leaning over a snoring Inuyasha) Inuyasha is so cute when he’s sleeping!

Immortality lost: I know, it just makes me want to pet his ears.

Miroku: Should I?

Immortality lost: Go for it.

Miroku: (tentatively pokes at one of the ears)

Inuyasha: (twitches his ear, and snores louder)

Miroku: (giggles)

Immortality lost: (rolls her eyes)

Kagome: Let me out of this closet! I’m hungry, and I need to go to the bathroom!

Immortality lost: Should have thought of that before you attacked me, shouldn’t you?

Kagome: Pleeeeeeeaaaaasssseee!

Inuyasha: (burying his head in his pillow) Damnit wench can’t you see that I’m trying to sleep?!

Kagome: (whines for a bit) Sit boy!

Inuyasha: (mumbles through pillow) If you let her out I’ll kill her!

Immortality lost: Sorry Kagome the vote says you stay. See ya folks!
