Loss And Gain
A/N: Oh my god… its been forever sense I’ve updated this story. I’m soooo sorry everyone. Well, here’s the next chapter of heart made from stone.
Chapter four: Loss and Gain
He didn’t know what drew her to save her that day. He stood there, above the small girl as she lay there in the rain, looking pathetic and lost. Honestly, he should have just killed the neko and then just left the miko there. He was sure that his brother would find her soon enough. But then again, with the condition she was in and counting that the useless half breed didn’t even show up when she was attacked spoke volumes for the taiyoukai. Inuyasha had abandoned the girl.
Useless. The whole lot of them was useless, weak and pathetic. Yet he found himself now taking the young miko into his arms and bringing her with him. Jaken should have set camp in the cave by now. Once the miko had awoken from her slumber, he would escort her back to his brother’s pack and leave her. After all, the girl was not his problem. At least, that was what he kept telling himself.
**
Her whole body ached. Why it ached, she had no idea. She ached, but felt strangely warm. With a small groan, the teen miko woke up slowly to find herself in a cave. She tried, oh how she tried to remember what happened. Slowly, yet quickly it hit her like a ton of bricks. She remembered as Inuyasha told Kikyou how he was strongly in love with her and how he didn’t care about Kagome. How… how she was nothing to him. Kagome remembered running though the woods, her heart torn and broken from the confession. She had fallen, hurt her ankle and was being attacked by a youkai. By that time, she didn’t care if she lived or not.
A small laugh escaped her lips as she drew her arms around her body. Figures. Figures that heartbreak from a man who never even looked her way would get her killed. Not some youkai, not Naraku, but some Hanyou who couldn’t care about her feelings. Slowly the small laugh burst into a loud, bash kind of laugh.
“And can I inquire miko, what is so funny?” A calm voice asked her to her right.
Kagome’s laugh turned into a small chuckle as tears fell down her face. “Because now I see how stupid I honestly am. How pathetic I look, sitting here in a cave, alone and broken because of him. I always thought that if I was going to die, it would be in battle. Or maybe as an old woman. I was always told that I was so strong to put up with his shit. Sango always said that she would lose it if Inuyasha treated her like that. But no one knew how much it really hurt. And when I finally break, it almost kills me. It honestly almost kills me. Who would have thought that the strong miko from the oh so wonderful future would end up being so… weak.” Finally her laugh died down and sobs racked her body.
“You will stop your tears miko. They are wasted on a half breed like him.”
“What do you know?!” Kagome screamed turning to see that the man she spoke to was none other then Sesshomaru. But she didn’t care anymore. If he killed her, then so what? “I’ve taken it so much! I knew that he would always run back to her! I prayed to the kami’s that maybe he would care. Just even cared a little bit about how I felt. But I was wrong! Well you know what? I’m not some strong person who can let her heart be broken over and over again. I’m not like you Sesshomaru! I’m not some cold hearted bastard who doesn’t care about what happens to others. I loved that moron! I gave him everything that I could. I’ve bled for him too! I helped him find shards because it was my fault they broke in the first place!”
“And tell me miko, would you have let him take the jewel from you and wish to be a full youkai?” The inuyoukai asked her.
Instantly Kagome stopped in her ranting. Would she have let Inuyasha make that sort of selfish wish on the jewel? “No…” She whispered. “I wouldn’t have let him make that wish on the jewel.”
“Why?”
“Because… it’s a selfish wish. He would go on a rampage and kill everything until something would kill him and take the jewel.” She answered her voice even softer.
“Then what would you do if he demanded it from you? Swore up and down that he cared and loved you and if you loved him back, you would hand him what would be rightfully his.”
Kagome looked up at the youkai, her chocolate orbs red with anger. “Then I would know. I would know that he wouldn’t love me. I would take the jewel and wish it out of existence. That it would no longer be part of this world or of any world period.”
A small smirk made its way on Sesshomaru’s lips. “Then it seems to me that you are stronger then you give yourself credit for miko.”
Her angry expression changed quickly to that of someone confused. “What… do you mean?”
“If you were weak, then you would have given in. You would have thought you were doing it out of love and given him the jewel. It takes a strong person to deny something that their loved one desired.” He knew that all too well. The very woman he loved denied him the only thing he ever wished for. Her devotion.
Kagome could only stare at him before a small giggle could leave her lips. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to laugh.” She said, seeing his eyebrow arch at her. “Its just, that’s the most words I’ve ever heard come out of your mouth that didn’t have the word ‘die’ in it. It just surprised me is all. Who knew that I would be getting love advice from you.”
“Hn.”
Kagome shook her head as she looked at the fire, then around the cave. The sound of falling rain could he heard outside of the cave, and how dark it was inside showed that it was late at night. Looking more around, she saw Rin curled up against the two headed dragon, asleep, and Jaken close by. Also asleep. She was shocked that in the middle of her screaming that none of them woke up.
“Um… I guess I owe you my thanks. I’m guessing you’re the one who saved me from the youkai earlier?”
Sesshomaru gave her a small nod.
Kagome fiddled with her skirt. “I owe you one then. Thank you so much Sesshomaru.”
He continued to watch her as the light from the fire played along her skin and hair. Honestly, she looked like a lost, yet drowned kitten. He wanted to leave her with Inuyasha’s pack, her his instincts were saying otherwise. They were screaming at him to take her with them.
“It is late miko, get some sleep.” He said to her. He would worry about what to do with her in the morning.
Kagome gave him a small nod and curled up next to the fire. Her body was still oh so tired and soon she fell quickly asleep.
