Chapter 4
The Debut of Rubies

"Kagome." Inuyasha said shaking her shoulder lightly trying to wake the sleeping girl. He wanted to set out at a good time.

"Inuyasha?" she said sleepily while swatting at the hand shaking her shoulder. Still after all this time she was never a morning person.

Yawning while opening up an eye she saw the silver haired hanyou gazing at her. She moved to sit up bringing her face closer to Inuyasha's, but he did not move out of her way. They stood in that position for quite sometime, when Kagome realized he was not going to move she placed her hand on his chest to push him slightly so he would get the clue. 'He had been doing things like this lately trying to find us in an intimate position. Ever since I told him I no longer am interested in a romantic relationship with him anymore so he can go see Kikyo all he wanted.'

Of course he went but that is a story for another time.

Getting up from her sleeping bag she stood in her pajama's stretching her arms above her head. Her shirt moved and exposed her back to the chill morning air and she shivered.

*rub rub rub*

"eep!" *smack* "Hentai!" Kagome screamed and whirled around towards her 'attacker' and let her hand fly. When she finally was turned enough to see who's face connected with her palm, it was the houshi Miroku with a stupid grin on his face.

Three figures watched the scene, heads shaking, "He will never learn." one of them said.

"Why lady Kagome I was only following directions." said the houshi sheepishly while rubbing his red cheek.

"Directions?" she asked her brow twitching in annoyance.

"Yes your, how do you say pajama bottoms, yes, your pajama bottoms says to smack that." He replied with a lecherous smile on his face. "So I did." he said feigning innocence to save him self from another smack.

"Don't. Ever. Do. That. Again…Unless you want to be castrated!" Kagome hissed while she fisted her hands at her side, her eyes filled with promised pain.

"Of course Lady Kagome." said a cowering Miroku trying to pacify the enraged onna.

He did not sleep last night nor did he need it, but his mind was obsessing over something he had no control over every time his gaze returned to the weird miko's katana. 'I know it is not the same sword that my Mitsukai wielded but I cannot help but notice the similarities.' Sesshomaru mused while looking at Kagome.

She was lying in her blue sleeping bag with Shippo, the bag zipped to her chin to ward of the morning cold. She was sound asleep; here eyes closed peacefully, her mouth slightly opened with a serene expression on her face. His eyes swept over her face surveying her while she was not awake to notice or feel his gaze on her. 'It is missing the stones and that alone was all the information needed to know that this is not her sword but the resemblance was uncanny. If the Miko's sword had the jewels it would be the exact copy down to the color of the ribbon on the hilt. I would think it was the same sword.' He thought while returning his gaze to the sky.

'I wonder what if the jewels had significance. It seems strange for a sword to be decorated as such but have no use for them.' He thought his eyes still trained on the stars in the sky all the while thinking how strange things have become.

Dawn was approaching and the sky was beginning to light with the with the first morning rays. Inuyasha was the first to rise as the sunlight reached the tree he was sleeping in. Next to awaken were the two humans Sango and Miroku. Shippo had woken when he smelt the breakfast Sango had begun to cook.

Sesshomaru watched as Inuyasha walked across the clearing to wake the miko.

"INUYASHA WATCH OUT!!" Screamed Kagome as two boar youkai charged at him. Kagome gripped her bow with her left hand and her right went to her quiver to get an arrow. Notching the arrow on the draw string she took aim. Shoulders squared legs slightly spread to steady her self she pulled back the arrow. Closing her eyes briefly she whispered a silent prayer that she hit the mark. The arrow glowed a lavender color then she opened her eyes, taking careful aim at one of the boar youkai "Hit the Mark." she said as she released the arrow. She watched it fly true to its path and hit the youkai she was aiming for in the chest.

The youkai screamed in pain gripping the arrow now protruding its chest. "Ahhh!" was the only sound the youkai could make while the purifying energy scorching at it, flesh burning away layer by layer until there was nothing left but ash.

The battle should have been a quick one the boar youkai were not strong but every time one would die another would take its place. It was not until the fifth one was killed that a swarm of lower level youkai entered the clearing, there were hundreds of them, they were greatly out numbered. It was not until she finished notching the new arrow that she was made aware that Inuyasha was forced away from her. 'Kuso!' she thought while she looked at Inuyasha who obviously had not noticed at all.

She watched as Sesshomaru took on ten youkai at once, she could tell he was having a bit of trouble, 'He must be wounded somewhere' she thought noticing his lagging speed she was worried.

Hard, squeezing, and slippery were the last thoughts in her brain, she was grabbed around the waist by something hard, squeezing, and slippery. She looked down at her waist to see what it was and her heart stopped "Naraku!" she spat venomously snarling and growling while struggling to escape.

"Ku ku ku my little priestess I have you now!" he chimed while bringing her towards him.

"INUYASHAAAAA!!" she screamed trying to get his attention so he would save her. Looking around the clearing her terror grew. 'He'll never make to me on time!' she thought while she began to struggle anew. She saw Sesshomaru fighting his way toward her, cutting down all that got in his way, but still he would not get to her in time. Her survival instincts kicked in and she reached for her katana, she was lucky the tentacle did not cover it.

*SLING*

The noise of her unsheathing her sword registered within her ningen ears. Without much thought she charged her sword with her miko powers. The katana began to slightly glow a lavender color rubies showed up scattered on the hilt and the glow intensified.

Kagome had no time to survey the sword or its new changes when she cut through the tentacles holding her down. From the sky she fell "AHHHH!!!" she screamed when she saw how far in the air she was she knew if she was not caught she would surely die.



Sesshomaru was fighting his way across the field to get to the miko, he heard her scream for Inuyasha that was when he noticed who had her. He had given his word to protect her, so headed towards her to do just that. He watched as Naraku jumped into the sky and hovered above the battle like the coward he was. That was when he noticed she had drawn her sword; he watched it as it began to glow with her power brightly. That was not what made him freeze in his step though; the sword within her hand had rubies on it. He shook out of his revere when he saw her cut through Naraku and begin her decent to the ground. "AHHHH!!!" he heard her scream, wasting no time he launched himself into the air catching the miko in mid air.



Kagome felt strong arms wrap around her, she knew she was saved. Cracking her eyes open she expected to see Inuyasha and was surprised to see that it was Sesshomaru. "Th-thank you." she stuttered her appreciation to him.



Sesshomaru said nothing just put her on the ground and faced the golem. He knew it was a puppet due to the fact that Naraku is a coward and would never come to face them himself. Keeping an eye on his enemy he brought his sword in front of him and leaped at the golem with speed unmatched and sliced it in half.

"Ku ku Ku, you have only delayed the inevitable the miko will be mine!" Naraku's voice sounded from all around them.

"…"

Silence greeted Naraku's little statement and Kagome stepped behind Sesshomaru out of reflex to seek protection from the vile creature. Sesshomaru did not acknowledge the movement she made because it did make it easier to protect her, but he was not about to let her know he was protecting her.

The group had finished killing the rest of the small youkai gunryo and moved to check up on the rest of their group.
