Rivals

Chapter 4: Rivals

Inuyasha was shocked by what Sesshoumaru had just said, as he, Miroku and the white haired boy stood outside of the school. “You’re going to quit school? Why?” he asked in astonishment.

“My father made me promise that if anyone in the human realm found out my true identity, then I would return to my own realm,” the tall boy answered. He noticed the hopeful look that crossed Inuyasha’s face. “And where I go, he goes,” Sesshoumaru added for good measure, laying his hand on Miroku's shoulder and smirking in triumph when that anticipative gleam disappeared from the other boy’s eyes.

Inuyasha sat down on the curb, putting his head in his hands, thinking hard. ‘I don’t give a shit where Sesshoumaru goes, but I don’t want Miroku to leave, especially with that jerk. And all that stuff last night. Something about him being a demon and spirits and…I don’t really get it. Damn, how can I stop Miroku from leaving?’

Inuyasha suddenly got an idea and he leapt from the ground surprising both Sesshoumaru and Miroku who were wondering if he was having a nervous breakdown or something.

“I refuse to accept it,” Inuyasha cried. “There’s no way that spirits exist in my house so I couldn’t have seen what doesn’t exist! Therefore, I didn’t see anything and there’s no need for you guys to quit school. Ha!”

Miroku stood looking at his friend with wide eyes and a gaping mouth. Sesshoumaru, too, looked surprised, but hid it better. He was actually thinking that the dark haired boy’s logic was making some kind of weird sense.

Inuyasha wasn’t done yet. He stepped right up to Sesshoumaru sticking his finger in the taller boys face. “But, I also refuse to accept your relationship with Miroku!”

Sesshoumaru glared daggers at the human boy. “That, human, is none of your business,” he ground out angrily.

“You have no right to make him do those things against his will,” Inuyasha proclaimed as he took a small step back from the frowning demon boy, not liking the sharpening of his golden gaze.

“What are you talking about?” Sesshoumaru asked, beginning to lose patience with this one.

“Like…the kissing…and…the other stuff!” Inuyasha managed to get out, his cheeks beginning to pink up as he thought back to what he had seen since meeting these two.

“That was purification,” Sesshoumaru told him non-chalantly.

‘More shit I don’t understand,’ Inuyasha thought, putting his hand on his forehead.

Sesshoumaru gave an exasperated sigh. “My shouki weakens in the human realm and I begin to feel ill. He has the ability to purify my demon aura.”

“What the hell does kissing have to do with it then!?” Inuyasha yelled, letting his feelings of frustration come forward.

“It is easier to absorb shouki through physical contact,” Sesshoumaru returned smugly. He was in no way going to admit to this human that he and his servant were in any more of a relationship than that.

Miroku looked down at the ground, a sad look crossing his face. “I’m only a servant. It is my only worth…”

“Hey, th..that’s not right, you…your worth a lot more than that!” Inuyasha stammered out. ‘This guy’s got him thinking that he’s totally valueless,’ Inuyasha thought angrily.

Sesshoumaru saw the grateful and awed look his vassal was giving to the human and the soft way the human was looking at Miroku. The demon felt a jolt of surprise flow through him at the depth of his feelings of jealousy that rose up within him in that instant. He remembered a time when Miroku had looked at him that way, when he had found him, a small boy huddled under a tree.

Sesshoumaru thought back to the time when he had been standing and staring at the crying child. “Are you alone?” he had asked.

The small boy had nodded his head, trying to choke back the tears that were still flowing down his face.

“Then I’ll make you my vassal. Come.” Sesshoumaru ordered, holding out his hand to the boy. That’s when Miroku had looked at him as if he was the saviour of the whole world, and he had reached up to put his small hand in the demons larger one.

Sesshoumaru shook himself out of his remembrances and then grabbed Miroku's hand with a scowl. “We’ll be late for class,” he growled out, pulling his servant away from his human rival.
