chapter four
Shizuka awoke in the predawn light. The nightmare that had plagued her nights for the last few months had appeared tonight again. She could see her fiancée running with Youko. They were laughing and smiling. Kuronue was twirling the necklace that she had given him. Then the necklace flung back and he was chasing it. Youko was trying to bring him back. She sees him being stabbed though the middle with a bamboo spear. She could hear him shouting “Forget about me, save yourself, Kurama” His indigo blue eyes fading. The last words that slip past his lips as he dies was her name and an apology.

She moved so Hotaru wouldn’t wake up. She walked out of the hotel and down to the edge of town. This was the perfect place to train. She sat down and began to do breathing exercises.

Kaede was up before the rest and was making breakfast for her guests. Kurama awoke to the sounds of cooking utensils being moved.
“May I help you Lady Kaede?” Kurama asked. Kaede nodded her thanks and allowed the young man to help her.
“So you are a kitsune youkai?”
“Yes.” He lifted the pot over the flame and as she handed him vegetables he added them to the mix. “You have demon visitors often?”
“Two full youkai, one half breed inu, and three humans. One is a monk the other a demon slayer and the third a reincarnation of my sister.”
“That is one strange pack.” Kurama noted.
“As is your own”
“True. This Naraku, You seem to know about him. Can you tell me more?” Kaede nodded and proceeded to tell him about the evil incarnation and her sister Kikyou. How she was in a relationship with the half-breed inu and how Naraku tore them apart, killed her sister and how Kagome came to them.
“So the well is a portal between times. That is interesting. So you say Naraku has headed west as well as your friends?” Kaede nodded and finished cooking the meal as the rest of the group woke up. Hiei just walked out into the morning light. This world was so seemingly peaceful. He was uncomfortable. No world is this calm. Kurama came out from where Yusuke and Kuwabara were stuffing their faces of Kaede’s meal.
“Hn.”
“Hiei, I think we should head west and find this group that is after the demon Naraku.”
“Hn,” Hiei looked at the rising sun. If they were going to try and catch this group they should have been on the road already. “Get the bone heads.” Kurama laughed and went inside to his friends and dragged them from the food. After thanking Kaede the group decided to have Hiei go ahead of them and watch and send telepathic messages back to them.

Hiei traveled at the speed of light and tried to find the scent of the half-breed. He came to the hotel and looked in through the window. He saw the inu, but unfortunately he saw him as well. There they stood face to face. Well almost face to face. InuYasha looked down into his eyes. They kept their eyes locked until Miroku stirred. InuYasha turned to his friend and Hiei took the chance to disappear. Years of stealth and training all gone when he though they would be asleep. He had gotten arrogant.
He heard Kurama’s voice in his head. ‘Hiei? Are you there yet?’
‘Yes, Fox, I found the inu.’ He wouldn’t tell them that he had been seen, eye-to-eye with him. He decided to use his third eye to erase that part of the memory. Later that night he would do it. ‘They are in the next town over. There are more than expected. I see a youko with them and a small child.’
‘Ok Hiei thank you.’
‘Hn.’ He broke the connection with the ex-thief and sighed.

Shizuka was meditating after training and smelled something familiar. Faintly. She breathed in deep. She knew that scent. But it was too faint to tell. She got up from her crossed legged position and walked back to town. Hotaru was waiting for her.
“How did training go?” Shizuka did some hand movements and gestures. “That bad?” She laughed and then watched the rest of the movements. “Ok I’ll ask them, Are you sure it is a friendly scent?” Shizuka nodded. “Ok then come on.” The two of them walked back to the group.
“There you are Shizuka.” Kagome greeted her and she nodded her acknowledgement to the girl.
“Shizuka can smell someone coming that could help in your fight to destroy Naraku.”
“Really?” Sango looked up from packing and turned to Hotaru.
“Yea she says it is an old friend of hers. They are about a half a day behind us so maybe we could rest and relax here.” The group agreed and thought it would be ok to relax for a little while. Shizuka goes over to the window and breathes in the scent again. Oh she hoped it was him. They were coming back for her.
