“Aaah!!!”
The pain was red. So was the blood.
Miroku was panicking, he was alone with Inuyasha, the hanyo having gone into labour. The girls were gone, fetching a healer but things had progressed quicker than any of them had thought.
Miroku had not been to any childbirth before this in his life, but he believed there shouldn't have been so much blood. And Inuyasha was in terrible pain. And squeezing his hands so hard he thought they might break.
After a gasping, pained breath, the hanyou cried out in pain again.
“I can't do this any more...” Inuyasha breathed laboriously, slumping back against Miroku's chest. The contractions felt like they were tearing him in half, debilitating him, making his vision, his mind go red.
The red of intense pain. The colour of the blood he knew was coming from him, he could smell it and the smell sickened him. He was ready to pass out any minute now, his strength giving up.
He loved the child but if it did not come out of him soon he didn't know what he'd do. He was afraid of passing out from the pain, the child might die if he did. He cursed of not knowing what he should do.
The birth had caught them unaware, the child being born too early. They had been miles from Kaede's village and he'd not been able to move any more as the contractions had rabidly increased coming ever closer one another, making it impossible to move Inuyasha even by carrying him. As the sun had begun to sink behind the horizon, they'd set up camp and the girls had left to fetch a healer, leaving Miroku alone with Inuyasha.
And now the hanyo was in labour, aided only by his lover by his side.
Inuyasha was berating himself. He'd been so stupid, insisting he go with the others even when he'd been so far along.
And now he might lose their child, he would betray Miroku...
“Inuyasha”, Miroku kissed the top of his head, hoping he could help with something else than just words, “you have to... Please, you have to hang in there...”
The hanyo puffed out air, letting out a strangled cry as another contraction hit, gripping his insides and making already worn muscles groan.
Only this time it was different, Inuyasha could feel something coming down, coming out from him. He hissed as his sore flesh stretched, letting out a strained whimper.
“I think...It's coming...”
He cried again, intense pain ripping at his insides. Even with the pain he appreciated that something seemed to be happening at last.
Miroku's eyebrows flew up. The baby was coming? Now?
It was over more quickly than neither of them had realized. Miroku left his place behind Inuyasha and caught the baby in his arms as Inuyasha pushed it out in one last push.
Inuyasha lifted his head, bangs clinging to his sweaty forehead and looked at Miroku. “Is it?...”
Miroku looked up at him, with an expression of such awe in his face that Inuyasha didn't believe he would ever see again. He gently wrapped the baby up and it gave out a wail.
“It's a girl,” Miroku whispered as he snuggled against Inuyasha, kissing him briefly.
She was tiny, she was beautiful and she was theirs.
And she was alive.
Small but alive. Their daughter. Now and forever.
