The Woe of Soldiers

Sorry I haven’t updated in a while. My Grandfather got put in the hospital so we had to go back over to New Orleans to help take care of some things. I also had a bit of writer’s block, but finally here is the fourth chapter. No smut yet, sorry but I like to develop a plot before diving into the really fun parts.

Everything with the exception of the plot and Azarruya belong to their respective creators (aka NOT ME)

Still looking for a beta reader anyone interested?

Anyways on to the show!!!!!!

**********************************************************************************

Azarruya, blinded by her tears, hurtles through the woods not even caring that her skin is being scraped and cut from the passing branches. She has no clue where she’s going, just that she has to get away. The senshi’s faces flash through her mind as she runs.

**Its been so long since I’ve had the comfort of someone’s company. I can’t let myself get too close. Chaos will continue to kill anyone and everyone that I care about until she destroys me. I can’t put them through that and I just can’t go through it again. I won’t lose anymore friends...I can’t lose anymore**

She finally stops when she reaches the edge of a lake. The full moon illuminates the area surrounding the lake and is reflected in the calm surface. Azarruya spends several minutes staring at the moon’s reflection as a shadowy figure watches her, unnoticed, from the trees.

Kouga is surprised by her speed as he catches up and watches her from the tree branches. He allowed himself to admire her as she stands by the lake, the moonlight glinting off her armor and giving her an ethereal appearance. It isn’t till her shoulders heave and slump that he notices the glistening tears running down her pale cheeks. Having never been very good with crying women, he decides to just stay in the trees and watch her...for now.

Azarruya allows herself one last sob before her spine straightens and her eyes travel upwards to the stars. As she holds her gaze on the sky, the stars above began to swirl. She steps into the lake, pulling the pearl studded comb from her hair and letting her tresses fall down her back. Slowly her right arm rises until her hand is stretched towards the heavens. The swirling stars extend towards her almost as if mimicking her arm’s position. She stares at the arm like figure as if mesmerized by it.

From the shadows of the leaves, Kouga’s mouth drops. Was he actually seeing the stars come down from the heavens at her command? Does her sailor name have something to do with this? Or is this some kind of danger? He tries to move a branch closer, but the one he picks can’t hold his weight. Before he can jump free the branch crashes to the ground, dragging him along for the ride.

Azarruya hears the crack and shoots her hand towards the sound. The stars that had been swirling above her shoot towards Kouga.

The stars hit their mark mid fall and the wolf prince finds himself suspended in a thick mist. He squints and tries to see where Azarruya has gone, only to be jumped from the side and pinned to the closest tree. The mist instantly clears and he finds Azarruya’s eyes staring into his own. She’s pinned his arms to the tree on either side of his head and he is surprised to find that while being strong enough to immobilize his arms, her touch is so gentle that he barely feels it until he tries to struggle against it. **Hehe, but she hasn’t pinned my legs

“Why were you following me?” Azarruya demands in a cold tone. She tries to keep her mind focused, but she can’t help noticing how solid and muscular his body is. **Damn now I know I’ve been single too long if the first thing I think of after pinning a stalker is how muscular his body is**

“Well excuse me,” Kouga starts in an irritated tone, “but when one of my pack runs off its my job to make sure they get back safely.” Kouga emphasizes his last word by knocking Azarruya’s legs out from under her and pinning her to the ground with his body weight.

Azarruya lets out a cry as she feels herself fall back, followed by a sound “umpf” when Kouga’s body lands on top of her. She growls as she tries to free her arms from his grip.

“I am not your job to take care of. Now get off of me you disgusting wolf”, that being said she flips them over so that she is pinning him. As she leans over him with eyes flashing, her chestnut colored hair falls over her shoulders and brushes against his chest and face.

Kouga groans inwardly at the gentle caress of her tresses. **How can one woman possess so much fire and still be so damned soft?** He quickly shakes his head though as he catches the smirk on Azarruya’s face. **She thinks she’s won does she? We’ll just see about that.** This time he is nearly grinning as he lets out a growl and flips them over yet again. Now that he is on top again he can’t help staring at the way her hair is spread out beneath her and how the moon creates such a radiant glow to brighten her face while making her eyes darker.

“Like it or not, now you’ve fought alongside me, you’re in my pack and I will protect you. So you might as well get over it.” Kouga states in his most official tone. To his confusion though, Azarruya laughs. Not a normal laugh, but a hollow laugh that seems to come from the air instead of the goddess below him.

“You’re dreaming if you think you can protect me, or anyone else for that matter, from Chaos. If you piss her off, she will terrorize you and cause you more anguish that you could have thought possible. Then, once she’s done playing with you, she’ll kill you. Anyone you hold dear to you, she will track down and murder in front of your eyes. And if one your loved ones she doesn’t kill, she turns them against you and orders them to profess their undying love and devotion to you while holding a knife behind your back.” Azarruya didn’t know why she had said it, but there it was in her own words. Shinozaki...her Shinozaki had done just that. He had danced with her and whispered lovingly in her ear as he always did at balls and then he walked her out to the gardens Holding her close to his warm body to keep her from getting a chill...or so she had foolishly thought...then stopping her next to the crystal fountain. Gazing so lovingly into her eyes as he told her of his love for her and apologizing for his own weakness before sheathing his dagger in her back.

Kouga gaped at the woman below him as tears began leak from her eyes once more. **Shit, is that what she meant when she said her weakest moment? That bitch had someone she loved attack her.** Before even he realized it, he was holding her in his arms and she was sobbing into his shoulder. He soothingly rubbed her back and tried to seem in control of the situation, even though it was blatantly obvious he had never been more uncomfortable in his life. His whole body was burning with hatred for his newest enemy. His inner youkai was thrashing about, sensing the chance to burst free and wreck havoc.

Azarruya didn’t know how she ended up the in wolf prince’s arms, but she found herself feeling somewhat safe for the first time since that awful night with Shinozaki. Her heart had yet to heal and it seemed that every beat burned the scar on her back. She didn’t know why the knife had left a permanent scar, she had survived far worse wounds with no scar at all. Yet, this one persisted through the millenniums.

As he felt her sobs lessen to slight hiccups, Kouga ventured a question. “Who did it?”

Azarruya broke away from him at the question and looked into his eyes. He guessed she was looking for a reason not to trust him and found himself fervently hoping that she found none.

“His name was Shinozaki. He was a general from the Moon and we were to announce our engagement immediately following the ceremony. The last two things he said to me were ‘I love you’ and ‘I’m sorry’. I guess I should have known better, I shouldn’t have followed him to the gardens. If I hadn’t followed him, then perhaps my friends and family would be alive right now.” Now only a single tear ran down her face.

Kouga felt his heart go out to the woman in front of him, he knew what she meant. He had said those same words after Naraku killed his comrades. He pulled her to him again and said in a weaker voice than he would have liked, “I’m afraid those are the woes of every soldier. It doesn’t matter if you lose one or a hundred, you always feel as if it was your fault. You always think back to what you could have done differently to prevent the deaths, but no matter how you play it, you know that it wouldn’t matter. The same would be dead now as before.” Kouga then stood up and offered his hand to help Azarruya to her feet.

As she takes his hand, their eyes lock and their souls recognize a kindred spirit in the other. He helps her up and lets her wash her face in the lake before they head back to camp, after all no one but a soldier can understand a soldier’s woes.

Wow this one was a bit harder to write. There were so many ways I wanted to go with it that I didn’t know which way to go first. Coming up next...the Inu-gang’s first battle with Chaos *Duh duh DUUUUUUH*

I’m thinking of not updating till I get a new review, that way I at least know if people are enjoying reading this as much as I enjoying writing it.

Anyways off to dreamland I go to dream of my next story.
