A stick in the spokes

A small, wailing bundle was placed in the Lady’s arms while a midwife wiped the sweat from her Lady’s brow. “It’s a girl, m’lady,” the old woman whispered. Pushing the cloth surrounding the baby’s face aside gingerly with her fingers, the Lady’s eyes widened in shock. Seated in the middle of her new daughter’s forehead was the mark of the heir to their house – a silver, upside-down crescent moon. A mark reserved for male children only.

The Lady then proceeded to faint.

Upon seeing the child, the Lord looked angrily at a wall for a few moments, and then put his fist through it.

About 20 miles away, an old woman prepared to journey to the Northern Forest.

Sora murmured and grumbled to herself for what had to be the hundredth time since their journey began. Her current method of transportation, a large raven demon, was relieved that they were finally close to their destination so that he could be rid of her. The way she talked to herself had him wondering if the Lord would find her sane enough to even take her advice, let alone even grant her entrance into his home.

The raven landed in the front courtyard, and Sora slipped easily down his extended wing. “Good for nothing…stinky…I bet you peck your own poop!” Sora muttered low under her breath. The raven cawed loudly and flapped his wings hard enough to stir up a small dust storm around her before taking to the skies. “Jackass!!!” she called after him before turning and heading towards the doors leading into the palace. “I should have pooped on her…next time, old witch.” the raven thought as he soared in the direction of his nest.

“Now, my lord, about the child…I have been granted the opportunity to see into the girl’s future. I will tell you what to do with her. She should not be destroyed; she is quite powerful. I will teach her myself when she is of age.” Sora’s squinting eyes danced back and forth around the room, landing on the child and then on her parents, and then back again. The child easily resembled her mother, with onyx black hair, golden eyes, with a set of soft black ears atop her head, the result of being a half-dog demon. The silver moon on her forehead was complimented by delicate silver slashes branching from her jaw line to the middle of her cheeks. The child, however, did not carry her mother’s anxious expression, but one of curiosity as she looked at Sora. Sora noticed that while her mother would glance down at the baby’s position in her lap occasionally, her father did not look at the child.

Sora cleared her throat. “Now, what you must do…”

Kagome fidgeted in her position next to her father. She held her hands clasped behind her back and twisted slightly from side to side, wondering what he was going to tell her. Her father gazed coolly down at her, and she froze under his glare. “Girl, you will read everything in this library. That is all.” Before Kagome could open her lips to speak, he had turned on his heel and was gone. Kagome slowly turned back to the shelves of scrolls lining the wall in front of her. She was too small – barely up to her father's thigh – to reach most of the scrolls above the first shelf. She walked to the end of the shelves, and with a small sigh, pulled out the first scroll.
