Chapter Four: Chiyoko’s mystery man

It was the first time Chiyoko had really noticed the guy. She was on her way home from school and saw the ice cream truck passed by. Quickly looking in her pockets she counted her money. As the truck stopped dozens of kids ran over to it. Taking her time she walked over and got in line. Toward the front of the line there he stood. He was tall and good looking. ‘He could be a model or something’ she thought to herself.

She watched the guy intensely as he turned around and counted how many kids stood behind him in line. When he reached the front of the line he told the man in the truck “I want one chocolate ice cream cone and whatever else the next sixteen kids want I will pay for it.”

Chiyoko counted how many kids stood in line and there was exactly sixteen. A few more kids were approaching the truck but they would not be included. When she reached the front of the line she ordered a chocolate ice cone too. She turned to the good looking man to thank him but before she could say anything the man in the ice cream truck did. “Hey, kid, it’s real nice that you to do this for the younger kids, but doesn’t it get a little expensive doing it every week?”

“Yeah, but it’s worth it to see the smiles on their faces.”

Not only was he good looking but his was kind hearted. Chiyoko didn’t want to be rude and cut in on their conversation so she simply smiled at the young man as her way of saying thanks. However, the guy just kept talking to the ice cream dealer and didn’t seem to notice her.

Licking her ice cream cone Chiyoko walked home in a daze. To her it was like love at first sight. To bad he hadn’t even noticed she was alive. She figured being only eleven had something to do with it. Although, her body was just starting to blossom it was nothing a man would notice. She hoped she would see him again soon.

She realized after seeing him a few more times buying ice cream for the kids, that he lived right in front of the building the ice cream truck stopped in front of. Everyday she would see him sitting on the steps of his building after school was out. He lived down the block from her.

She began to have mixed emotions whenever school was out. She was happy she was able to spend the day with her friends in the feudal era but at the same time sad she wouldn’t see her mystery man that day.

As Chiyoko got older she would let her imagination run free. Every morning she was sure to leave the house at the same time so she could walk to school with him. Well, she walked at the same pace as he did from across the street. Her favorite thing to do was make believe he was confessing his undying love to her on the way to school. It was fun to have a make believe romance.

After a few years had passed, he still hadn’t noticed her. At night Chiyoko would find herself standing in front of the mirror in her room. “I don’t know why he never looks my way. I’m not ugly. I even have a nice body. What’s wrong with him? Maybe he’s gay. No, he can’t be, he’s to good looking to be gay. Maybe he already has a girlfriend and he’s so devoted to her, he doesn’t have eyes for anyone else. Or maybe I’m just too young for him.” What ever the reason was he didn’t pay her any mind.

Shippo remembered Chiyoko had an enormous crush on some stupid guy once she turned eleven. He wondered what this guy was like. And on more then one occasion fantasized about pushing this mystery man into traffic.

All the years Shippo kept watch over Chiyoko she had never once noticed him. He was happy she didn’t. But now with this guy in the way, Shippo couldn’t help but to wish he could tell Chiyoko the truth about him being there. However, he knew that he couldn’t and it just killed him.

On his way to work in the mornings Shippo would listen to his MP3 player. He always kept his distance making sure not to do anything to grab her attention. He never stared at her but was watchful over her surroundings. He even looked for this mystery man she had told him about. There was no one who stood out and she gave no hint that she was interested in anyone.

A few times when she was older he heard her talking to herself. Her words were so low only a youkai who had been fully concentrating on what she was saying could hear her. He smiled as he caught bits and pieces. “Oh. Me! You really love me! ... I can’t just run away with you, what about my family? ... Of course I love you. I loved you ever since the day I first saw you…”

Listening to her speak like that was just too cute for him to get jealous. The older she got the more he could see the girl he was in love with. His favorite part of the day became the mornings. During that time he got to see a whole different side of Chiyoko.

Once Chiyoko got to school safely Shippo would head to his office. After opening his training school in the mornings he would sit in his office and sort out the paperwork. Inuyasha and Haruki just taught class, which left him with everything else. Shippo couldn’t come in an hour before class to work on things because he liked to make sure Chiyoko both got home and through the well safely.

As time went by Chiyoko grow older. The year she turned fourteen Chiyoko had started high school. Shippo knew he would have to change around his schedule in order to watch her. He almost felt like a stalker, but reminded himself of his vow to protect her. Being that she couldn’t know he was in her time yet, watching over her this way was the only way he could keep his vow.

The school she would be attending was about four blocks up from her old school. He found a small café near the school and put in an application. He didn’t need the money, what he needed was a reason to be in the area. His work hours at the café were the same as the schools hours, allowing him to walk to and from the school when she did.

Shippo’s days were long and hard. He spent most of his day working at the café; after he got off work he would walk home. An hour later he would go to his training school to teach a class and do paper work. He always made sure no matter what he was back by the well before Chiyoko was. Sometimes that meant going back to the office to finish his paper work.

Although he ran around all day it was worth it to see Chiyoko’s smiling face everyday and know that she was safe.

Now that she was fourteen Shippo was getting nervous. Chiyoko was old enough for a grown man to notice her. And she was definitely noticeable. She looked at least two years older then the girls her age. Plus her beauty was mind boggling.

Shippo looked around for this mystery man but found there were now a lot of guys who could fit the description. He only wished he had paid more attention to what she said about the guy when he was younger instead of moping.

There was one guy however who stood out from the rest. The man was older then Chiyoko by a few years. He was a senior at her school. The boy would walk to school by himself everyday even though he looked to be quit popular. There had been several times Shippo caught the guy looking at Chiyoko with admiration in his eyes with out her noticing.

There was one time Shippo had stopped the guy to ask for the time. Chiyoko walked right passed the two and smiled widely. The young man looked like she just asked him to marry her. “Wow! Is she not the most beautiful girl in the world? I wish I had the courage to talk to her.” The boy told Shippo.

‘Today is the day’ Chiyoko thought to herself. Her mystery man was just up ahead of her. Not only was he on the same side of the street as her but he was standing still talking to another guy. She didn’t know the other guy but she’d seen him around. This was her chance. Today she would try and flirt with him. ‘I’ll give him a smile so captivating he’ll have to notice me.’

She walked by the two men, looked toward them and smiled. With her eyes she let him know she was into him.

Shippo didn’t so much as speak a word, he just walked away. ‘Well there goes the answer to that question. It has to be him. Being that he lives close to her, he walked the same route she did for the past three years. He’s a few years older then her. He’s into her but he’s to shy to talk to her. And to put it in stone, she just gave him a smile that said ‘here I am notice me, because I like you.’ ” Shippo was teed off.

The boy came from a well off family. He was well groomed and attractive. Shippo could understand why Chiyoko could fall for someone of that caliber.

Jealousy was the only emotion Shippo could feel at the moment. It was different knowing there was someone else but knowing who it was, was something totally different. He could picture himself grabbing the boy by the neck and ripping his throat out. Watching the boy fall lifelessly to the ground onto a pool of blood, would have brought Shippo great joy.

Shippo thought about something that suddenly made his blood run cold. ‘He’s supposed to save her life this year. That’s when she finds out he really likes her. And a few weeks later she’s going to think I’m dead. She’ll run right straight into his arms.’ Shippo was now beyond pissed “I’ll be damned if I let that little bastard take my woman.”

From that day on Shippo kept a close eye on the guy. As much as he would’ve wanted to step in and tell the guy to back off, he knew he couldn’t. Things had to happen the same way as they did when he was younger.

Shippo decided to do some research on the guy. Yori was an all around good guy. Every night he would take goodies to the hospital for the long term cancer patients-. He was an A student and played on the tennis team at school. Shippo also found out that the last girlfriend Yori had was three years ago. He broke up with her because she was determined to have sex with him. He had loved the young lady but wanted to wait until he was married.

As nice as Yori was Shippo couldn’t lose Chiyoko to this kid. Shippo knew his time was getting shorter. Summer was only two months away and that’s when Yori would safe Chiyoko. Thinking back Shippo remembered something. After Yori saves Chiyoko she said she didn’t see him again. Shippo began to wonder why.

“Let’s see I can’t kill him. So why does he just disappear? Does he get sick? Did I threaten him? I know I’ll send him away!”

Looking on-line Shippo found a little girl who had cancer. She only had six months to a year to live. Her one wish was to go to Disney world before she died. Shippo contacted the family and arranged the plans. He didn’t set an exact date but told them it would be in the summer. He also let the family know he would send someone along on the trip with them to make sure everything went well.

On his way home from the café one day Shippo approached Yori.

“Hey! How’s it going? My name is Shippo.”

“Hi, I’m Yori. Nice to meet you.” The two shook hands.

“I noticed you go to the hospital everyday to visit the cancer patients. That’s a real nice thing to do.”

“Yeah, well, they are all suffering so much and if I can bring just one of those people happiness…then I’m happy.”

Shippo admired the guy. He was selfless for someone so young. He knew without a doubt his plan would work for everyone. The little girl would get her dying wish, Yori would be happy just seeing the little girl happy, and Shippo will be happy for the little girl and the fact that Yori would be out of the picture for a little while. Winning situation for everyone!

Shippo told Yori about the little girl and her wish. “I have the money to send her and her family but I need someone who I know will make sure everything goes just right for her. I want her wish to be a dream come true. I thought being that you…”

“Say no more. It would be an honor. How much do I need in order to go? And when do I leave?”

“I’m paying for everything! I’m even going to give you extra money to pay for food and anything else you all want. I don’t yet have an exact date but it will be in the summer time. I will call you a day or two before so I can give you the tickets and money.”

“This is just wonderful, I can’t wait! Thank you Shippo.”

“No, thank you. You have no idea how much you going means to me.” The two stopped momentarily to exchange information.

Shippo was happy everything was going according to his plain. The day Yori saves Chiyoko he will call and send him away. This truly was a win-win situation.
