Chapter IV: A Painful Story Not Forgotten
“Wow! What was that?” An amazed Shippo asked his friends.
“I do not know, but I imagine this young woman has an ability to heal with her touch. That would explain why she asked to be protected. It looks as if she has used her own lifeforce to heal me” Miroku said.
“Oh I do hope she will be okay!” said Kagome. “Well, the least we can do is make her more comfortable. Lets make her a bed.”
“What are you talking about Kagome, we don’t have time to dally around making her comfortable. Lets just grab her and go” said InuYasha.
“Don’t be silly, InuYasha, we have to make sure she is well. We owe her that much” Miroku said.
InuYasha growled at him.
“Sit!” Kagome said pointedly.
A few hours later:
Arena woke up feeling warm and comfortable. She had been moved to a soft bed of moss and was covered in a warm blanket, her head was also resting on a soft pillow.
“How long have I been asleep?” she asked no one in particular.
“Not long, only about three hours” Kagome answered.
“Do you feel up to telling us your story Arena?” Sango asked.
“Sure, once I get something to eat if you don’t mind."
“Well, I don’t know how all this happened to me so I will start with what I do know. I used to work as a housekeeper and nanny for a very kind family quite far away from here. One day the village was raided by bandits and they killed everyone in the village. I happened to be away picking berries and I returned to find all our possessions stolen and the bodies of already dead villagers. I was absolutely shocked that someone would do such a thing. I went through the bodies trying to find someone alive, and came across the lady I worked for who happened to be still breathing. She was the village priestess, but yet she had been unable to save the village, and blamed herself for it. She said to me:
“Arena, I am sorry, I am not strong enough. But you ….” and then she died right there in my arms. I have no idea what she intended to say, or what she did to me, but after that day I started noticing that I could heal things. It started with plants, and then I found a hurt rabbit near the hut, and picked him up to take him to a safe place and somehow he became cured! I wandered on my own for quite awhile trying to figure out what had happened to me. I eventually presented myself as a healer to villages. They all laughed at me, saying such an important job would never be given to such a little girl.
Eventually I did find this one village that took me in. I lived quite happily for three years curing sicknesses, cuts, broken bones, and serving as a midwife. But one day a horrible demon came to the town and killed all the first born children. I was awoken by the town leader and he brought me to the town gates where the bodies of 23 children lay. It was a horrifying sight and one that I could barely stand.
I looked down at the first child, a young girl, and noticed she was still breathing. I immediately put my hands to her and healed her. I moved to the next one and did the same. They were all cut down and left for dead. I healed 22 children that day. I don’t know how I was able to keep going. As you saw I must sleep for hours after healing one grown man. I passed out a few times but the villagers kept bringing me more and more children to touch while I lay. They cared nothing about my well-being, only that I healed their children. Of course I wanted to, but I had a limit. After the 22nd child I passed out completely. They could not revive me. They brought me to the sick tent and let me sleep. I slept for three days and awoke to see the village leader beside my bed.
“So you are alive?” he said to me.
“I am thank you. I appreciate your help.”
“What help. I owe you nothing” he glared at me “I wanted you to get better so I could kill you myself.”
I stared at him in disbelief. Why would he want to kill me? I did not harm his children.
“You saved almost every child in the village except my son. He was intended to rule when I died, now the village will be turned to chaos. Everyone will want their own son to rule, and the village will be torn apart by it.” He came closer to me and took out a gleaming knife with a garnet hilt. I recognized it immediately as a ceremonial sword for killing evil creatures.
“Wait, I am not evil! It was just too much for me. I am sorry, I cannot control who I can heal!” I screamed for help, and some villagers came running. Two young men restrained the village leader while one helped me out of bed.
“Get out of here while you can” a lady said “people do not thank you for what you did. They think you cured everyone except the leader’s son on purpose.”
I didn’t waste any time, I grabbed my clothes and took off out the door. As I was leaving the children I saw actually seemed scared of me, the children that if I had not given my lifeforce to would not be alive…” she sighed at the painful memory, “that was three months ago, I’ve been pretty much wandering about ever since trying to find a home.” Arena finished her story and looked down at her hands, saddened by the memory of the way those children looked at her.
“You poor girl!”
“What horrible people!!”
“Why don’t you stay with us? we move around a lot, but we could certainly use your help, and in return we could take care of you” Kagome said.
“Whaaat??? Wait a second Kagome, how about asking me first before you invite people to join our group” InuYasha shouted.
“Don’t be so deft InuYasha, you know damn well that we need someone like her with all the fights you get into!” Kagome yelled back.
InuYasha gave a growl and stalked off.
“It’s okay Arena, we would love to have you with us. And InuYasha thinks so too, he knows Kagome is right. That is why he went off. He is really just pouting.” Miroku said.
“yay! we have a new friend” Shippo jumped around in a happy little circle.
“Wow! What was that?” An amazed Shippo asked his friends.
