Chapter 4-

Carriage, carry that love-

Death of mine to his.

My home be his

His home of stone, n’er built

My love left to die by that non-returning age.

She held the shards close to the cusp in the front of her neck, looking at him, he smirked and nodded before she gently pressed it into her skin, letting it disappear beneath her flesh. Shaekaku pressed his right hand to her forehead letting a greenish glow sprout forth and consume her. She began to pulsate, power rolling off her in waves… youkai power. My eyes cleared as I stared onward completely unable to conceive, let alone, prevent what was happening. It began small, the roots of her hair turning back to their fiery orange, her human teeth returning to fangs. But it didn’t stop there, her fangs getting longer than they were originally, her nails turning to deadly claws long enough to belong to a dragon. A snarl poured from her mouth, a sound more brought forth from pain than anything else. I wanted to comfort her, but held down the impulse. The markings on her face faded into view, the strips on her cheeks becoming wider, darker, and more ragged. The orange in her hair gradually grew until her entire head of black hair was once again encased with it. It floated around her in its new found length with her new power. Her tail sprouted from her lower back, its fur standing on end, making it appear much larger than it really was and her ears grew to have pointed tips. With one last pulse her eyes flashed blue and filmed over in red, the youkai aura about her calming, her hair settling down, but still she continued to growl.

Her entire body shook, seeming to rid itself of any remaining flakes of humanity, when she had clearly already passed that threshold. She was gone. It had not taken me long to figure out the purpose driving her to such rudimentary means. Whether for purely platonic reasons or things beyond that, she wanted to be my equal, something I could accept, it was possible that it even went so far as to her desiring me, feeling as though as a lord, I would never lower myself to mate a half breed. If only I could tell her how wrong that thought was, but now it was too late. My hesitation had caused her to loose patients, even faith in me, it was all my fault. Rin whimpered slightly and I realized in the ensuing confrontation, she would not survive. I pressed her further behind me and took up a defensive stance, “Rin, run away from here.”

“But Master…” she interrupted me. I glared coldly at her, “You dare defy me Rin? At a time like this?” thankfully she heard the urgency in my voice, and with one last worried glance towards Kodora, she fled. I now turned all my attention back to Kodora who stood upright now, a slight bow in her upper back her undoubtedly heavily clawed hand hung, in near lifelessness, at her sides. Her fiery hair concealed her eyes in shadow; her breathing now beginning to calm. Physical embodiment of blood-lust, that is what she had become. I remembered the times I had seen Inuyasha transform, however distasteful it is for me to compare him to my Kodora, I knew the repercussions of her actions thanks, in part, to him.

She brought a hand up to her face and examined it. I stared on, unflinchingly as she quickly pivoted on her heels… and killed Shaekaku. Her claws cleanly sliced through his neck, red blood spirted everywhere, covering her arm and splattering on her face and cloths, her white pants splotched with cherry. His last words, “but… It was…” stuttered themselves out of his mouth along with trickles of the crimson liquid. I narrowed my eyes slightly as I realized she wasn’t done, even though he was clearly dead, his eyes dull and lifeless. She caught his limp body as it was falling to the ground and dug her hand deep into his chest, letting the thick, hot blood flow down the curves of her muscled arm dripping slowly onto the ground, fallowed by him soon after as she violently pulled her appendage from him. He hit the ground with a sickening thud, his head falling to the side, blood rapidly saturating the earth around him. ‘At least that is not much of a loss,’ I thought as I began to redirect my attention to her glowing eyes, so cold, so unlike my little Kodora. She blinked sizing me up, giving me the moment I needed to think over the situation.

Before Inuyasha, I had never even considered this possibility though I should have foreseen it. From all the knowledge I’ve gained hence, I know the only way to subdue the blood was through extreme physical pain or emotional stimulation… or death. I sincerely hoped it would not come to that. The girl, Kagome, had a subduing spell she used on the hanyou hence the extreme physical pain, but that option was not available to me. Also, after deep investigation, I learned that she had also reverted him to his natural state by… kissing him. My skin heated fractionally, hardly enough to show, that option would also not work, Inuyasha’s situation was vastly different from this one. Kodora’s blood had been forcibly pulled out by the Shikon shards, and, no doubt, they also protected it from ever again being suppressed. They would have to be removed if any strategy was to succeed. I could easily over power her, and from there extract the shards, but what would happen after that? It was her human time of the year, if she suddenly was forced to go from youkai to ningin within a short period of time, her body might not be able to handle the transference of such power. It would be quite unlike the changes from human to hanyou and back again. I nearly cursed, I hated not knowing things like this, but the plan would have to do for now.

She turned to fully face me and smirked a bit before closing her eyes, bringing her bloodied hand up to her face and breathing deeply, savoring the hot, salty, metallic sent. Her unnaturally long fangs protruded her lips. Her eyes popped open; her pupils focusing on me, she moved her left foot behind her slightly using it as spring board to lunge forward, words were of no use now. She put her hands down by her sides and surprised me by slamming her head directly into mine. I heard a sickening crack as my skull fractured under the pressure. Then she quickly spun around and swung her foot to the side of my head, which I easily dodged by ducking down slightly and let my poison whip fly. It caught her across her stomach, tearing easily through her cloths but only lightly breaking the skin, leaving a clean cut all the way from her left hip to the right side of her body, small drips of blood sliding over her abdominal muscles. All this happened in a flash before we jumped apart to ready ourselves for the second wave of attacks.

She touched her stomach wound slightly and growled, but it quickly was replaced by a smirk as her eyes settled on my scrapped and bleeding forehead. My eyes widened marginally as her hands began to glow a faint green, ‘she’s already learning to use her new found powers,’ I thought as an unwelcome sense of pride washed over me, ‘you were the one who taught her everything she knows about those powers too.’ I nearly shook my head, this was not the time. Her tail whipped about behind her, giving me an idea. Before she had time to react, I grabbed hold of my own furred appendage and flung it towards her. Her eyes widened as it wrapped around her entire frame, only allowing her head to be seen, she snarled menacingly. Unfazed I walked the few steps it took to put us face to face and was suddenly hit with the full blast of her sent. I nearly wobbled where I stood, ‘so… strong…’ I could not stop myself from leaning in to her pulse point on her neck and sniffing. This youkai version of her still held the same sent as before, but it was much more potent now. She still smelled of the blood that was now beginning to stain the white coat of my tail, and she smelled like a full demon. I felt the lids of my eyes close half way and I could not stop myself from tasting her, slowly swirling my tongue over her neck. I swallowed a growl that had suddenly sprung to my throat and tightly shut my eyes which, I‘m sure had begun to bleed red, ‘so this is why she did it?’ I pulled away reluctantly, ‘she knew that I would have no reason to resist her as a full demon, indeed, she now has more reasons for me to give into her than ever before, there is no way she could have known her mind would be mostly lost in the transformation, she never before saw me lose control and most likely believed that such a thing was a preposterous idea, how unfortunate…’ My eyes became unfocused, I knew I had to finish it then or risk losing control of myself.

She struggled violently as my hand reached up to her neck and plucked out one shard, thinking it would be easier on her body to take it one at a time. Her body convulsed and power flew off of her, she growled loudly in pain, I was the one hurting her and it hurt me as well. Once she seemed to have calmed I took away another, and the same process cycled again. However, this time I unconsciously loosened my tail’s grip on her in an attempt to alleviate some of her pain and she quickly slipped out of my grasp and flipped backwards to the place she had been standing in before, her breathing harsh and ragged. She was now more aware of what was going on and seemed able to formulate words, “Why? I did this for you,” though, not many words. “I know…. I know you like me like this… so why are you stopping this?“ I relaxed my pose and wound my tail back into its rightful possesion around my sholder, its snowy composition now broken by splotches of crimson. “Kodora, you are not thinking properly, let me take…”

“No!” she interrupted sharply, “that’s what this is about, isn’t it? You… you just want them for yourself, don’t you?”

“Do not be a fool, Kodora, you know that is not true,” she wavered slightly on her feet, ‘blood loss.’ The words flickered trough my mind just as she fell to her knees. I looked at her, she was covered in blood, most of it hers, a lot of it Shaekaku’s, an a small amount of it, I noted coolly, was mine. Her eyes went blank and her pupils dilated, and she joined Shaekaku on the ground. I sighed and walked over to her limp body and pulled free the last of the shards. Now unconscious, there were no growls or snarls to accompany her body’s seizing. Again I was hit in the face with rippling waves of power as it fell from her trembling form. To my horror, blood began to drizzle out of the corners of her mouth as she transformed into… something.

Her hair flickered back to its original black, but her fangs did not recede. The markings on her face dissipated, but her tail did not. Her body reacquired its former shape, except for her feet, which remained canine in nature. I knelt down onto my knees as she let out a nearly inaudible sigh… and her life slipped away from her.

In that moment I froze, never do I want to relive that feeling, that pure, unadulterated despair. No matter how short a time it resided inside my mind, it felt an eternity. Her body had been unable to process the power transfer, as I had feared. I scooped up her limp body into my arms and cradled her to my armored chest, looking down at her bloodied form. Red filled my vision…
