Chapter 4: Begging

Sango stood there with her body pressed up against the Monks, the knife that she was using to cut the vegetable now held tightly in her hand pressed up against his throat. She didn’t even realized what she was doing, all she knew is she didn’t want to be near him right now, she didn’t want hear anymore of his promises, his excuses….

“Sango what are you doing?” The Monk spoke quietly as not to further upset her. ‘What have I done?' He thought to himself. “Please Sango lets talk about this, before you do something that you’ll regret.” He said with a gulp as sweat started to bead up around his brow..

“Just shut up Miroku, I’m tired of hearing your voice, I’m tired of your promises, your roaming eyes, and your roaming hands! Do you think I’m stupid? I’ve put up with you and your excuses long enough!” She yelled as she pulled away from him, dropping the knife to the floor. Staggering towards the other side of the hut she continued, “Just leave…forget about your promise, I don’t want to marry you, and I damn sure don’t want to bare any of your perverted children”as tears came to eyes, and her body collapsed against the floor. Her body appeared as if it was being ravaged by the ache of every lost love that she would’ve had, had she not secretly devoted herself to the Monk.

As the Monk regained his composure his eyes came to rest on the woman that he had hurt so severely with a malicious womanizing, and his arrogance that she would always be there, ‘could she really no longer wishes to spend her life with me, does she really not wish to bear my children, or is she just upset right now?’ He questioned himself, as he debated whether he should leave her to calm down.

He thought about all the times that she came to his aid when he so selfishly ran off alone because he thought there was a beautiful woman in distress, only for it to be a demon hiding within. Sango was always there.

“Do you remember Mount Hakkashu?” Sango asked between sobs, interrupting the Monks thoughts.

“Yes” the Monk replied as he slowly walked over to Sango and kneeled before her.

“When I thought I had lost you, I didn’t want to go on, I would have never left you there for the demons to feast on your remains, they would’ve had to take us both….that was the day that I officially choose you to spend my life with.” She said as she started to sob vilently again.

As he watched her body jerk with each sob the memory of that day came flooding back to him, “Sango I remember that day all to well. Kagura had sent your harikotsu back at you, which caused you to be knocked out, that’s when hoards of demons started coming at us, the only thing I could do was use my wind tunnel to suck them and the san yosho (poison bees) in…and I did so to save your life regardless of whether it would cost me mine. I remember regaining consciousness and you were…weeping over me, telling me that you would not live with out me…Oh, Sango…” the Monk stated as he looked at the woman in front of him, as if he was seeing her for the first time. The truth was he had forgotten about that day, he had forgotten about the promise he made to her.

After Naraku was destroyed all he wanted to do was enjoy and celebrate the new lease on life he had been given. ‘How could I have been so selfish, after everything that she has done for me, everything that we’ve been through together. Miroku you’re such a fool’ he berated himself. He couldn’t make himself look at her now, to see the pain in her eyes and feel the hurt radiating from her soul was too much for him to bear. Now he was the one that wanted to run away to distance himself so that he could think, he didn’t deserve her...had he ever deserved her?

“Do you remember, after we came down from the Mount Hakkashu, we were sitting by the lake when you asked me to spend the rest of my life with you, to bear your children once Naraku was defeated,” Sango said as she pulled her knees to her chest and laid her head on top of them she continued, “I’m not really angry that you did what ever you did to that woman today….it’s just that you haven’t changed Miroku, your still the same perverted Monk that I met so 3 ½ years ago…..I didn’t expect that we would wed right after we killed Naraku, but it has been almost a year, and you haven’t even brought it up once….I’m tired Miroku….I’m just really tired.” She finished with a sigh.

As he sat there listening to her speak, he couldn’t help but feel what she was feeling, he wanted to reach out and touch her to embrace her, and tell her that everything would be alright, that he would carry through with his promise, but right now he didn’t think that it would make much of a difference. He knew he had to do something, he wasn’t sure exactly what, but he knew he couldn’t loose her not after all she had done for him, she was the only woman that he had ever really truly respected and loved.

“I’m such a fool” he started to say, as he continued to speak his voice became heavy with raw pain, “I’ve hurt you so much…I didn’t even realize what I was doing, every time I groped some unsuspecting woman, or asked one to bear my children, it killed a part of you…I’m such a foolish man, Sango…..please don’t give up on me, give me one last chance to make this right, I belong with you and you with me..” He raised his head to look at her, noticing that she was still not looking at him he raised her chin so that he could see her eyes.

As she listened to what he said, she smiled inwardly wanting and wishing that she could believe him, but she knew him better than he knew himself, she knew that a leopard couldn’t change the color of his spots, ‘if only I could believe you…oh, how I want to believe you…’ her thought were interrupted when she felt his hand on her chin.Looking into his eyes she saw what she had never seen before, she saw tears in his eyes , he wasn’t openly sobbing, but she could see the sorrow in his eyes, the way his shoulders hung over as if weighed down by time itself.

Neither spoke for a moment, and neither looked away, it was as if they were each searching the others soul for something.

He was looking for forgiveness, some trace of hope that she wouldn’t leave him.

She was looking for sincerity in his words, a hint of something that would tell her that she could trust and believe in him again.

“Miroku” she finally said as she reached up to wipe away the one and only tear that was brave enough to fall from his eyes, as she did so he nuzzled his face into her hand as if he was craving her touch.

“Sango I’ve made too many mistakes to ask you to forgive me today..” he spoke with his eyes closed, as she rubbed her thumb behind his left ear, “but if you can find it in your heart to forgive me one day, to allow me to make this right, I promise you…” he reached up and placed his hand over hers, bringing it down to his lips, he kissed the inside of her palm gently, “I will make good on all of my promises to you..” he turned her hand over and kissed the outside, “I will never again hurt you or allow anyone else to hurt you like this.”

As she watched him she saw what she was looking for, but could she really forgive him, could she really trust him, or was he just acting until his next road trip? Or the next time they stumbled upon a beautiful woman in distress? She took her hand back from him, “Miroku…I would’ve loved to hear you say that a few days ago, a few hours ago even…but now after all of this…I just don’t know.” She finished as she turned away from him.

Gently smiling at her he said, “It’s alright Sango, I did this…a few hours ago I thought I had you and the whole world on a string. Now that I’m close to loosing you it really doesn’t matter anymore, the only thing I want in this world is you, and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that you know you can trust me, and that I’ll always be there for you. So you don’t have to answer me now, just tell me that you’ll give me a chance to prove myself to you, that’s all I ask.”

‘How am I suppose to answer that, if I say okay, it will be like I’m saying sure go ahead walk over me, if I say ’no’, I’ll seem cold and unforgiving…I really just want to forgive him, but he has to prove himself, he has to. Taking a deep breath she stood up, looking down at him she said, “do as you wish,” and walked out the hut headed towards Inuyasha and Kagome’s hut.

As Miroku watched her leave he thought, ‘well that sounds like an okay to me, but still it was so cold’ standing up and proceeding to walk out of the hut in the direction of the forest to find a spot to meditate his thoughts continued, ‘I have to prove myself to her, I’m not getting any younger after all and how often does a man find a woman like her’.

As he took his seat in the middle of the pasture in front of the village, preparing himself to begin praying and meditating his last thought was, ‘you’ll see Sango, you will forgive me and you will marry me.’
