The War and Southern Lord

No, I don't own Inuyasha, as much as I would like to. Review, please?

Chapter 4

‘Kagome! Hurry, it’s snack time!’, one of the demons cried out. The group of young demons all herded towards the tables and waited with excitement as the food was being passed out. She could feel herself tug the hand of another demon, though when she pulled, the hand pulled itself away.

‘What… do you think you’re doing?’. ‘Come sit at our table! I’ll save you a seat!’. Just as she was about look back…

Kagome suddenly woke up, the scent of blood filled her nose. It wasn’t just anyone’s blood though… She could smell the scent of Sesshomaru, the deep, rich, unique smell, mixed in amidst the blood. Frantically, she ran to where the smell was coming from, only to have tears come to her eyes at the sight.

He was lying in the grass, the front of his clothing soaked with blood. Kagome rushed to his side, trying to hold back her tears. ‘Sesshomaru-sama… Sesshomaru-sama…’. Gently, she shook him while calling his name, hoping that he would wake up. She put her ear to his chest and though it was not strong, she heard a heartbeat.

Mustering all the strength she had, Kagome lifted the Lord and slowly made her way back to the mansion. Pain filled every muscle in her body as she desperately tried to continue on her way. She knew that she could have left him and called for help, but something within her would not leave him.

When she finally reached the mansion, Kagome hurried to a guest room and placed Sesshomaru on the bed before rushing to tell her father. Takeshi, much to Kagome’s surprise, wasn’t worried at all, and merely got one of the servants to give Sesshomaru some medicine.

‘Don’t worry Kagome; Sesshomaru is more than capable of surviving this. For a Lord like him, he is able to take a lot more. He just needs some rest…’. Despite her father’s reassurance, Kagome kept her fingers crossed and insisted on watching over him for the night.

Once everything was settled down, Kagome felt the deep thoughts settle back into her mind as well. She didn’t understand all the feelings she had when she was around Sesshomaru. It was all so strange, so different from anything she had ever felt… But… That one instant at the mating ceremony, when their eyes met…

‘Coincidence, coincidence’, Kagome thought to herself. Her eyelids were drooping over her eyes, and her thoughts were all blurred when sleep took over her senses once more.

He watched as all the other demons ate, though the food on his plate remained. He could hear the sounds of food fights starting, just like every other day. He could hear voices talking, laughing, yelling, but none of it was to him, none but one.

Naptime came after mealtime, and it was always the same. He would be pushed along by the caretakers, put into a bed of some sort, and left alone. Whispers could be heard in the beginning, but one by one, they would all begin to fall asleep and silence soon reigned over the room. Although he was awake, it would be no different if he weren’t.

Seconds, minutes would pass by and everyday it would seem like an eternity. Next to him, lay the one person who he could not stand. No matter how many times he pushed away from her, she continued to talk to him, invite him to wherever she went. It didn’t seem selfish of her, but rather selfless.

He turned over to look, and –

Beside him, was a black haired demoness, dozing off in a chair next to him. He could not remember anything that had happened, but one by one, the events came back to him as he continued to stare at the demoness. The golden eyes quickly shut themselves when footsteps were heard approaching. It was as though he did want to be caught, though no crime was committed.

Takeshi saw Kagome asleep in the chair, and although he didn’t want to wake her up, he had to talk with Sesshomaru, and it would probably be best if she wasn’t there. ‘Kagome… Kagome, are you awake?’. ‘Hm… Oh… I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to fall asleep!’, Kagome whispered to her father.

‘Oh, there’s nothing wrong with that! Here, come with me. Lord Naraku has asked for you to go spend the day with him, and hopefully it will calm your nerves. How does that sound?’. Kagome looked over at Sesshomaru once more, then back at her father.

‘That sounds great… BUT, please don’t smother Sesshomaru-sama with your bone-crushing hugs, I don’t think he’s well enough’, Kagome said with small laugh. Takeshi gave her fake punch before cracking into a smile as well and helping her up. ‘You go enjoy yourself today; it will do you good. I have some things that I need to discuss with Sesshomaru, so I’ll stay here’.

Reluctantly, Kagome left and went to get dressed, still concerned about Sesshomaru. ‘Kagome. Snap out of it. He’s a mated man, and it’s not like he would like you anyways…’. Sighing, the demoness searched through her new closet, hoping to find something appropriate for the occasion.

Half an hour later, Kagome had decided on a dark red kimono, and had tied her hair up. ‘Kagome-sama? Are you ready? Lord Naraku is waiting for you downstairs!’, a maid called out to her. Not wanting to keep him waiting, Kagome hurried downstairs, and just when she least expected, she tripped on her kimono and ended up crashing into someone.

‘Oh, I’m so sor…’. ‘Are you alright?’, Naraku interrupted in a gentle voice. Kagome blushed and nodded, not daring to look him in the eyes. ‘Good, if you are ready, come with me, I have a carriage that is waiting outside’. Kagome walked alongside the Lord, trying her best to push Sesshomaru away from her mind. ‘I’m going to have fun today… No more Sesshomaru…’.

Takeshi sat into the chair Kagome was in, and saw that Sesshomaru had woken up. ‘So, ‘Lord’ Sesshomaru… What do you plan to do? The medicine I gave you will only keep the scar from spreading temporarily. You will have to leave Sarah and find the one… Or, give up…’. ‘I will find the one. When I get back to my lands, I will arrange for the mating ceremony to reversed’, Sesshomaru replied.

‘It is your choice, but realize that you do not have much time left. As well, I have talked to Naraku, and he says that he has already made plans to begin taking over the Eastern Lands if you do not take action. His army is gathering on the border, and will be ready to move in within a few days. I can organize for the mating ceremony to be reversed, but you will have direct your army’.

Sesshomaru slowly sat up on the bed, ignoring the pain in his chest. ‘I can sort this out. If Naraku makes any plans, please notify me’. Takeshi nodded and handed him his swords. ‘His army may not be as strong as yours, but… I have a feeling he’ll be ready if you decide to take over’.

‘And I, will be ready for him’. Without another word, the Western Lords left.

Laughter could be heard from the gardens in the Southern Lands as Kagome and Naraku made their way through a maze. Both having their eyes blindfolded, they had their arms outstretched and were fumbling around, hoping to find their way out. After an hour, they stumbled out, and when Kagome took off her blindfold, she was stunned beyond belief.

In front of her, was a rainforest that she had only seen in pictures, one that was being destroyed in the previous world she was in. ‘Would you like to take a stroll, Kagome-sama?’. The demoness could barely contain her excitement and quickly nodded before running into the forest.

Sesshomaru could feel the burning pain begin again, but he had far too much to do. Heading straight to his army while devising a plan, the Western Lord did not waste a single minute. The Eastern Lands would be his, whether Naraku liked it or not. He just needed to hold out for long enough… The reversal of the mating ceremony could wait…

Sarah sat alone in one of the guest bedrooms. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. None of this was supposed to be like this. The Lord of the Northern lands had spoken to her and explained what had happened. Even so…

‘I won the battle… So… How is it possible that I’m not the one?… Could Inutaisho have made a mistake? Unless… The black leopard demoness…’. Her eyes widened at the realization, though it frightened her to know that she wasn’t the strongest. Quickly, she pushed it from her mind, not wanting any mind-reading demons to pass by and find out. ‘No… I cannot let Sesshomaru-sama find out…’.

It was endless. One after another, Naraku had planned everything to the very last detail, and Kagome was just overwhelmed by everything. It was by far, the best ‘date’ she had ever been on, if she could call it a ‘date’. The entire Southern Lands seemed so magical and Kagome was enraptured by everything she saw.

At first, she didn’t think too much of him, and was hoping that she wouldn’t spend the whole time thinking about Sesshomaru, but now… Lord Naraku was the perfect gentleman; he was charming, funny, and was always by her side and never made her feel uncomfortable.

By the end of the day, the two sat on the rooftop of his mansion, looking out at the setting sun. Kagome had mixed emotions. One side of her still had a ‘crush’ on Sesshomaru, but another side of her was opening up to Naraku. As a gust blew past her, Kagome shivered at the cold. She looked up when a warm cover was placed on her shoulders.

‘Come with me, Kagome-sama. It’s starting to get colder, and your father would have my head if you got sick. Let us dine together once more before I part with you for today’. He held out a hand, which Kagome took, leaving behind her thoughts of Sesshomaru.

The preparations were being made, and the plans were being solidified. His army was more than ready, though he still pondered upon the words Takeshi had spoken to him. ‘His army may not be as strong as yours, but… I have a feeling he’ll be ready if you decide to take over…’. It may have been something about the way he spoke it, but somehow it seemed like the Northern Lord was hiding something from him.

‘Jaken. Send someone to tell Lord Takeshi that I will be over later in the night’. ‘Yes, mi’lord’, was the reply. He looked over his plan and once again, felt that it was flawless, but Takeshi’s words… Remained as clear as crystal in his mind.

Naraku stared at the girl. She was filled with so much innocence, so much beauty… So much power. He longed for her to be his, but he knew it would take more than one day to sway her. A bright shimmer from her neck caught his attention and he stared at the object.

‘Kagome-sama, that is a very beautiful necklace you have on. May I ask where you got it?’. Kagome touched the necklace gently, and gave small smile. ‘I’m actually not sure. I’ve always had it and have never had the heart to part with it. Silly, but it’s just been with me for everything… I guess in a way, it’s holding some memories of mine’.

Naraku nodded but continued to stare. The silver metal was shaped into a rose, and embedded in it were crystals that he had never seen before. There was an aura coming from it, faint, though it was most certainly there. From what Kagome had told him of where she came from, Naraku was sure that it wasn’t from there.

‘Ah… It’s getting late, so shall we end the day here?’. ‘Oh, okay. Lord Naraku, I would just like to thank you for everything you have done for me today. Words can’t even begin to describe how much joy you have brought to me’. ‘It was no problem at all, Kagome-sama… Come… I have a small surprise for you’.

He led her outside and in front of her stood a red and orange dragon, as well as a pure green dragon. ‘This… Is my parting gift for you. Ryoko and Takao have been with me since I was a child, and protected me when my parents passed away. I hope that they will be able to serve you well… And no, they don’t have human forms’, Naraku said with slight chuckle.

Kagome had to admit that she was a tad scared, but when Ryoko came up to her gently nudged her, her feelings changed completely. ‘I will come with you tonight to show you the different commands when riding them, but for the most part, they understand everyday words’.

Ryoko bent down and allowed Kagome to get on, and as soon as she was seated, the red dragon flew up into the air, soaring with the grace that any bird would envy. The demoness let out a cry of surprise and grabbed onto the dragon’s neck as Ryoko suddenly dipped downwards.

When they finally reached the Northern Lands, both were sporting wild hair styles and had grins on their face. For a moment, all was silent, and the two looked at each other. ‘…Naraku-sama… Thank you so much…’, Kagome mumbled, suddenly flushing red all over again. ‘The pleasure was all mine… Until next time, Kagome-sama’. With that, he disappeared off into the sky.

Sesshomaru growled in disgust. He had seen their flustered looks, and the way they looked at each other. Not wanting to think of what they had done, he rushed off to see Takeshi. After seeing that, he didn’t know if he could trust Takeshi… After all, he was allowing his daughter to be courted by Naraku. He forced himself to think of Takeshi, but deep down he was raging, though he refused to admit to himself…

Kagome had heard the sound of a growl, but when she looked to where it came from, there was nothing there. ‘I’m so tired that I’m probably hearing things…’, she thought to herself. ‘Ryoko, Takao, stay here’. The dragons did as they were told and started chewing on the nearby trees.

‘Sesshomaru… Back so soon?’. ‘Did Naraku tell you about any of his plans?’, Sesshomaru questioned. ‘If you are here to seeking answers to what I said earlier, then I only have advice to give you. Change your plans. He knows exactly what you are going to do, and he has positioned his army to be able to counter your attack. You will need your entire army for this battle’.

Sesshomaru paced back and forth, unable to stand still. ‘Naraku knows your strategies. He knows that your plans are supposedly flawless, and that you are not willing to take chances. He is going to use that to his advantage, so…’.

Takeshi strode the door and opened it just as Kagome was going to knock. ‘Is there something I can help you with, Kagome?’. ‘Oh, I’m sorry for interrupting, father, but um… Lord Naraku gave me two dragons, and I’m not sure where I should keep them’. ‘I’ll have some servants go and take care of them. You go rest for now, okay? I will be continuing your training tomorrow, so you need to rest up’.

‘Okay then. Good night father and a good night to you, Sesshomaru-sama’. Kagome bowed, but as she did so, she saw the golden eye of the Western Lord. It seemed emotionless at first, but Kagome could see the anger behind the disguise. Kagome left the two, though the look in Sesshomaru’s eyes still on her mind.

‘So, have I answered all you need to know, Sesshomaru?’, Takeshi asked. ‘I have one request…’. The Northern Lord raised a curious eyebrow, not knowing what brought on the change of tone. ‘Tell me about Kagome’.
