Demon’s Wishes
Kagome couldn’t believe the amount of time it was taking Inuyasha to come find her. She had been here for more than a month now and things were getting weird. She was constantly seeing a side of Sesshomaru that she would never have guessed existed. He was kind to her and to everyone in hiss mansion, human or demon, even with an emotionless face. She had begun to distinguish between his moods now, even when he tried for her not to. She had caught him playing and laughing with little Rin, too, but when he caught her peeping, she received a rumbling growl of warning. The deep, tenor laugh she heard played over and over in her mind.
Kagome sat thinking on all she had learned since she had been here. No one was rude to her, not even Sesshomaru, and Rin even looked up to her. Glancing out the window, the full moon winked back at her, making her realize how late it really was.
Resigned to not getting much sleep tonight, Kagome climbed out of bed and grabbed her bathing supplies. Sesshomaru had proven to be very agreeable to her needs, even if they included clothing and things like soap and shampoo. Trying to be as quiet as possible, Kagome tiptoed to the hot springs in the back of the gardens.
The bubbling springs were surrounded by a screen for people to have privacy bathing. Another screen split the pool in half so men and women didn’t have to bathe together. Kagome slid slowly into the hot water and gave a long sigh of comfort.
As she laid there allowing the water to work out the kinks in her sore body, a shrill voice rang through the gardens. It took her a moment to realize who the voice belonged to, but the voice that answered it was uncomfortably familiar. Stifling a gasp, Kagome lowered herself further in the water until only her nose, ears, and reddened forehead showed.
“How long until the half-breed gets here,” Sesshomaru’s cold voice demanded.
“He went looking for the dead priestess, my lord,” Jaken’s high voice answered. “Apparently, someone led him to believe that she was brought back once again.”
‘Kikyo’ Kagome thought as she pulled her head fully out of the water.
“Stupid half-breed,” Sesshomaru growled viciously. “Leave me, Jaken,” he told his advisor. Kagome could see Sesshomaru and Jaken’s silhouettes through the thin walls. They were standing near the stone bench almost at the very back of the gardens.
“Yes, Lord Sesshomaru,” Jaken stuttered out. Kagome watched as the little toad demon waddled away. When the door shut with a sharp click, Sesshomaru sat down on the bench and put his head in his hands. He gave a burdened sigh that tore at Kagome’s heart.
“What am I going to do,” Kagome heard Sesshomaru mumble to himself.
‘I’m not that bad’ Kagome thought sullenly. She felt rather hurt that Sesshomaru wanted to be rid of her.
“She is driving me crazy. My idiot half-brother was supposed to be here all ready and instead he is chasing his dead love.” Kagome crept closer to the wall, being careful to stay silent. “Maybe I miscalculated and he doesn’t care for her as much as I thought.” Kagome thought she should be hurt by that, but remarkably, it didn’t hurt very much. She also noted the hopeful note in Sesshomaru’s voice.
She watched as Sesshomaru ran a hand through his hair. She knew she shouldn’t be listening to this, but curiosity, you know. She was about to try and sneak away when a loud smack and a crumbling crack split the air. Looking back, she saw that Sesshomaru had punched the bench and, judging from the sound, cracked it.
“Why do I crave her,” he snarled softly. “How can a mere mortal invade my dreams and make me wish for her so badly?” Involuntarily, Kagome let a gasp escape. As she covered her mouth in shock, Sesshomaru’s head turned in her direction. Before she could think of running away, a pair of yellow-green whips slashed through the curtains. Kagome stared into Sesshomaru’s demon red eyes.
When Sesshomaru saw her, the red bled from his eyes and the blood drained from his face. He stared at his hidden weakness. Fear crept into his face and Kagome was astonished that he would openly show an emotion. Not understanding, a sudden stinging pain distracted her attention. Looking down at her stomach, she saw the water was being stained red from twin gashes across her stomach; similar to the one’s she had seen on Inuyasha’s back when he fought his brother.
Looking into Sesshomaru’s frightened amber eyes, Kagome felt comforted. She didn’t even hear herself whisper his name or his answer response. She watched him, as if from a dream, as he scooped up her naked from. Her vision darkened as she started to go unconscious. The last thing she heard was Sesshomaru whisper, “I’m so sorry, Kagome.” Finally, everything went black.
The darkness was peaceful.
