The Trials and Tribulations of Parenthood – Chapter 4
Hiei stood off to the side with Kurama while Yukina sat on the bench Kagome, her arms wrapped around the girl. Occasionally she would look up and spear him with a glare before her attention would be pulled back to whatever it was Kagome was saying. Hiei looked to be as bland and unconcerned as ever but Kurama could feel the unease coming off of him in waves.
“How was I supposed to know she would try something like this?” Hiei ran his hand through his hair for what had to be the hundredth time.
‘Maybe if you’d pulled your head out of your ass long enough to notice how upset she was you would have.’ Youko was restlessly prowling in Kurama’s mind trying to work off his aggravation.
“Look Hiei, physically she’s fine. At least Youko and I got to her before she could use that sword. Although I admit the speed we tackled her at was mostly Youko.”
Hiei looked up and into golden eyes that were totally Youko at the next remark. “And let me tell you something else. Those may be your children, but they are also my nieces or nephews. Remember that Hiei, it’s also my family you’re fucking with now.” The threat was implicit in Youko’s words and Hiei’s eyes narrowed.
“Don’t even bother to threaten me fox. I won’t be making the same mistake again.”
~*~*~*~*~*~
Yukina and Kagome sat on the bench not speaking for a long time and the only sound was of breathing.
Finally Kagome sighed and broke the silence. “Well, I guess I really did it this time. I would have been smarter to have jumped back down into the well and done it there.”
Yukina pursed her lips and shook her head slowly. “Are you sure the well would have let you go through being pregnant? And I assure you there is easier ways to die then being ripped apart by whatever Youkai happened to be passing by. Stop and think a minute Kagome, would Hiei be standing there so stunned if he didn’t feel something for you?” She turned and glared at her brother before turning back to Kagome.
“Would you and Kurama be willing to help me raise this baby? It has to have a father of some sort in it’s life or an uncle at least.”
Yukina slanted another look Hiei’s way before she answered slowly. “We will, I doubt you could keep us away from the children if you wanted to. But don’t you think perhaps Hiei should have a little say here?”
Kagome rose to her feet and snapped. “Ok, so I’ll ask him then!” She stomped over to where Hiei stood watching her. “Hiei, we need to talk.”
To say that he was shocked was putting it mildly. Never in his wildest dreams had he ever imagined Kagome telling him that if he didn’t want to be a father then fine, she would ask Kurama to fill the male role in their children’s lives.
‘Just try me Hiei, all she has to do is ask.’
‘Shut up fox and stay out of my problems. I don’t need your help dealing with them.’
‘Could’ve fooled me. Is that why Kagome and your kids almost died tonight?’
‘If she would have been home where she belonged this wouldn’t have happened. I think I’ll take her shoes away from her. She can’t run far without her shoes.’
‘Great, that solves everything Hiei. Keep her barefoot and pregnant. That solves everything.’ Youko’s sarcasm at that remark was the last straw for Hiei.
‘And just what do you think would solve this little problem of hers? I’ve already brought that damn little puppy home for crying out loud.’ Thinking of the puppy he had left at the house brought an extra snarl into Hiei’s voice.
‘You could try marking her and formalizing your relationship for starters.’ Kurama’s eyes were streaked with gold again, clearly showing Youko’s influence.
‘Do you really believe that’s what her problem is? Shit! I thought she was smart enough to know I would be here with her. Humans are so strange.’
Kurama suddenly burst out laughing and Hiei favored him with an annoyed look, that grew with outrage. The redhead was bent over holding his sides as if they hurt. “Just what’s so funny Kurama?”
“This is just too good. A fire demon with cold feet!”
“Kitsune, you’re looking to die an early death.”
Kagome stood staring at both of them, understanding slowly dawning in her eyes. She put her hands on her hips and loudly accused; “You’re afraid of making a commitment to me?”
“Come on Kagome, we’re going home! I don’t have to put up with this shit!”
Youko was chuckling inside Kurama’s head. ‘He can run but he can’t hide. Come on Kurama let’s take our own beautiful little mate home.’
~*~*~*~*~*~
“A puppy? You brought me home a puppy?” Kagome laughed with delight at the antics the puppy was currently involved in, chasing his tail around in circles and actually flipping over once when he managed to catch it.
“Stupid puppy.”
“This doesn’t get you off the hook you know.” Kagome slanted her eyes over and looked at Hiei.
“Somehow I didn’t think it would. I’m going to bed, you can come when you’re tired of watching that stupid dog.” Hiei walked down the hall towards the bedroom and soon muffled curses were coming from the bedroom. ‘Damn dog better learn where to use the bathroom.’
He was sleeping by the time Kagome came to bed but from the looks of it he wasn’t getting any rest. She sighed and went to get another blanket from the closet, if she didn’t she’d end up with no covers at all before morning. As it was she was lucky if she didn’t end up black and blue by morning from his kicking feet.
He was dreaming. Ice and cold and snow. Devoid of any life whatsoever. ‘This just doesn’t make sense. How did I get here? And where is everyone?. A slight chill circled him and then became a shimmering translucent image in front of him. Hiei’s jaw dropped, the image of his mother in front of him left him speechless.
‘My son, you’ve grown into such a handsome demon.’ Hina sighed in appreciation at the sight of her son all grown up. ‘But my time here with you is short, I have to talk quickly. I want you to know that I always loved you. And I know life’s been hard for you. I couldn’t do anything about that and I’m sorry for it. But I want you to know that I like this human girl you have found. And you marking her has my blessings. Love my grandchildren for me and know that I can see them. Your sisters children too. Give your sister my love for me.’ The image swirled again and his mother was gone leaving Hiei staring at the spot where she had been with her words burned into his brain.
Hiei woke with a start and stared out moodily into the graying dawn. ‘Why now? And after all this time?’ He looked down at Kagome sleeping next to him and decided a good run was what he needed to clear his head.
“You’re up early aren’t you?” Hiei looked down from his branch to find Kurama under him looking entirely too cheerful and rested.
“Well, you know how to goes.” Kurama shrugged and lifted an eyebrow. “Beautiful mate at home, no major problems to deal with lately, children on the way. A fire demon to poke fun at. What more could any demon ask for.”
The leaves on the branch Hiei was sitting on started to smolder. “If you don’t want that red hair that you’re so damn proud of to go up in flames I suggest you rethink the sarcastic remarks.”
“Tsk, Tsk taking out your frustrations on that tree.” Kurama looked closer at the little fire demon. His clothes looked like he had fought through hell and back, and if Kurama wasn’t mistaken those rings around his eyes looked like he hadn’t slept either. “Bad night huh?”
Hiei sighed and jumped out of the tree. “My mother came to me last night in my dreams. Told me that my marking Kagome has her blessings.”
“Feeling pressured are you?” Kurama chuckled and then added, Youko said to tell you that’s how it goes.
“I should have known better then to expect sympathy from either of you.”
A feather touch brushed up against Hiei’s youki and a moment later the same thing happened to Kurama.
“What the hell was that?”
“I don’t know, you felt it too?”
“Yeah, something was feeling around out there.”
‘Ugh, that’s a nasty oily feeling it has to it.’ Youko gave the distinct impression that if he could roll around on the ground to get rid of the foul feel he would be doing so.
“Wanna bet on how soon we get a call from Koenma to go investigate? The fool will probably have us out doing border patrol for the next month.”
“And it’s probably nothing at all to worry about. He’d have a heart attack if that pacifier of his rolled under his desk and disappeared for fifteen minutes.” That mental picture had both of them snickering, thinking of Koenma on his hands and knees searching for the damned thing.
Screams of terror cut through both Hiei and Kurama’s minds at the same time cutting through them like a knife. Kagome and Yukina.
