Thawing Her Heart

Chapter Four A promising proposition.

“Miko I have a proposition for you.” Sesshomaru’s icy gaze rested on her as his quiet emotionless words finally broke her from the awed silence she had fallen into. “Wait am I hearing this right? The great Taiyoukai, Sesshomaru Lord of the west has a proposition for me? A human?” She met his icy gaze and watched as her remark laced in sarcasm hit home.

His eyes narrowed slightly and she heard him hiss in his breath at her effrontery. “You would do well to speak to me with respect wench! Unless of course you want your heart and tongue ripped out.” She only stared back at him and replied, “Why not? What else do I have to lose? It’s not as if my heart feels anymore.” Sesshomaru again masked his surprise at hearing the utter acceptance of death in her tone. Oh his hanyou brother had done it this time. She would not forgive this pain he saw in her very soul as she said this.

Inuyasha bounded through the treetops trying to catch Kagome’s scent on the wind. He had lost track of it and was growling in anger as he realized that his brother had probably masked their scent when he sensed Inuyasha following them. Giving up he jumped down to the ground and decided to try again in the morning. It had grown late and he was tired, he looked around taking in his surroundings when a new familiar and unwelcome scent reached him. Gnashing his teeth he growled out, “Come out you stupid wolf I know you’re there!” Watching as the brush was swept aside as the whirlwind that was Kouga skidded to a halt not but ten yards from him. “What’s the deal mutt face? I caught Kagome’s scent a while ago but now it’s gone. Don’t tell me you failed to protect her again?” Kouga watched as his words caused Inuyasha to flinch and grab at the hilt of his sword, “That’s NONE of your business wolf!” Inuyasha spat at him. Kouga realized he was right in his assumption and slowly anger swept through him as he stalked to where his rival stood. “Where is she? What danger did you put her in this time?” Expecting another tirade Kouga was surprised when Inuyasha only growled in the back of his throat, but didn’t reply, only grabbed the hilt of the Tessaiga tighter.

Suddenly both heads turned as another figure made its way into the clearing, followed by another, and an even smaller one behind that. “Yes Inuyasha why don’t you explain to Kouga what you did?” Sangos voice called out with unmasked anger and betrayal. Inuyasha still not answering simply jumped to the nearest tree bough and took off again into the night. Sighing Miroku place a hand on the wolf lord’s shoulder before he could follow the mutt. “It seems as if I will have to give you the explanation. Please let us set camp and get some food going to break our fast and I will explain all to you my friend.” Kouga’s eyes widened at this last statement in shock. / What could have happened to make these two gaze at Inuyasha with such anger and betrayal in their eyes? Furthermore where was Kagome? / He glanced around realizing that the young fox demon was also not with them. Keeping his peace for once Kouga helped the two make camp.


Sitting across from Sesshomaru, Kagome couldn’t help but let her attention wander around the room. Tastefully done in colors of light mocha and cream his library gave off a very masculine feeling. She snapped back to attention when she heard him swiftly dismissing the servant who had brought a stack of papers to him. Watching impassively as he sat down and raised his cold gaze to hers once again. “I am surprised to see so many books. I would not have thought you would take the time out from slaughtering the helpless to read.” Sesshomaru’s anger boiled as his eyes met the miko’s and found himself once again in shock that her eyes were almost as icy and indifferent as his. Still he could catch the slightest trace of pain and…. Weariness in their depths. “Deciding to ignore her last comment he instead grabbed a paper from the stack upon his desk and slid it over to her. “What is this?” he watched her slowly pick up the paper to read it.

He watched as what she read sunk in and smirked inside at the surprise and confusion that laced her dark brown orbs. This girl is almost too easy to read he thought. “ I don’t understand,” she stated her eyes meeting his once again only to glance out the window to the gardens where the young fox was in conversation with a young human girl of about 5 or 6. The girls face split into a grin as she started to vigorously nod her head making her cute blue black hair bounce and sway. “It is simple Miko,” his voice brought her back as she turned her gaze back to him he continued. “ You will help Rin in her studies and in return I shall instruct you how to wield a sword so that you need not rely on my half-breed brother to defend you.”


Miroku took his bowl from Sango and after taking a bite and chewing quietly he became aware of the wolf lords gaze upon him. Where to start he quietly pondered, deciding directness was the best course of action he turned and met Kougas gaze. “ I will not leave anything out but I will only tell you once so do not interrupt. Inuyasha was called friend by me once but in light of what has happened recently I do not think I could look upon him as such again.” Noticing the quiet conviction in the young monks tone his whole body tensed as it became clear that the mutt had really screwed up this time. “What has he done?” Watching the monk take a breath and slowly release it he listened intently as he began to speak. “To put it quite simply my friend he has quite likely shattered her heart. Kagome finally admitted to him she loved him, but instead of embracing her love he tore her in two when told her that he loved both her and Kikyo too much to choose. So he had decided to take her as his mate to bear his children and keep Kikyo for his concubine.” Kougas breath hitched and pain lanced through him as he realized the pain she must have been in. Anger rose quickly but he tempered it knowing there was more to this story. “Kagome having taken Inuyasha’s prayer beads fled from him only to be caught by none other than Sesshomaru. He scoffed at Inuyasha and told him to tell us what he had told her. Kagome realizing he had heard every word of their conversation yelled her rage at him only to have him put her to sleep. As we watched and listened he told us what Inuyasha had done. Shippo then told us not to fear he sensed no danger to Kagome and swearing he would protect her he jumped to her. We could only watch as he took our dearest friend away, powerless to do anything. We have decided to take her back. Which leads to my question, will you help us?”


Kougas mind and heart raced as he slowly digested everything the monk had said. Finally he looked up and watching the taijia eat while petting the small bundle of fur that was Kirara, he looked back at Miroku. “I will help you but it will not be easy. Lord Seshhomaru is a very powerful Youkai, aside from that he is a very powerful lord with his holdings in the west. I can take you to his home for the next alliance meeting between us lords but I can not promise you that I can get her back.” The last was said with regret. He slowly continued on, “if he has taken her then in his mind he has a good reason. Going against him in this will be futile, once he makes a decision he does not waver from it.” Sango bowed her head as she listened to the wolf’s words the tears began anew as she stated in a wavering voice, “what could he possibly want with her? Why Kagome?” Miroku could only sigh knowing that none of them could answer her.

In the trees Inuyasha settled down as he heard the lat of their conversation drifting towards him. So they did not think him a friend anymore? Yet they would ask for that stinking wolf’s help. No problem but he would be following them so that he as well would find Kagome. However, unlike the wolf he did not fear his brother and he would not allow Kagome to tell him no! Settling in for the night his eyes closed as his form relaxed into slumber.


Unnoticed by the trio tucking in for the night the saimyoshou turned and flew off. / So Inuyasha could not make a decision hmm.. this would prove fun. / Naraku waved Kanna off as he pondered what he was going to do with the information he had just been shown. Slowly he stood calling out for Kagura as he did so. She appeared swiftly and silently before him. “Follow Inuyasha and his friends. Report back to me the result of their endeavors to regain the miko bitch.” Bowing Kagura took her leave as an evil grin slowly slipped across his features. Was her heart as shattered as the young monk had stated? Oh this was going to be fun!
