Devastation and decisions

Kagome broke the kiss for much needed air. She leaned her forehead an his chest, silent tears were running down her pale cheeks. A few minutes later she looked into Sesshoumaru´s eyes and asked "When?"
He knew to what she was refering to. Her beautiful face showed the sadness, pain and despair she was feeling.

His face was the same emotionless mask that she fell in love with almost 500 years ago but his eyes betrayed him. She could see the same pain and sadness that was destroying her heart. His deep sensual voice answered almost hesitantly "as this world started to change....and the barriers were created".

So, that was it. The damn barriers which seperated the youkai and ningen has also lead to the end of theri love. They could never be together, both knew this. That´s why he mated someone else. Still looking into his eyes she caressed his markings on his face. Her soft voice sounded broken "We never had a chance, had we?" Slowly she took a step back and out of his embrace. With a small sad smile she asked him "Do I know her?" He shook his head "She is a white tiger demon. Her name is Arashi." Kagome nodded, this time her smile reached her eyes "Please, be happy. That was all I´ve always wanted for all of us". She took a deep breath and continued "now tell me, how is Inuyasha, Shippo and Kirara?"

Something crossed his eyes that she couldn´t name, was that regret? He drew something out of his haori, something, she wouldn´t forget until she died. This time her heart stilled for some seconds until it started to pump the blood in a frenzied speed again. With trembling hands she reached for it and hold it in both hands. Tears were falling down on it uncontrollably and she was breathing hard.

The kotodama no renju which she had used too many times to subdue him. Now he was gone and it was the only thing left behind to remind her of him. That and her memories of her first love and her best friend.
Sesshoumaru wanted to comfort her, his hand reached out to her but Kagome swatted it away. Her bangs were covering her eyes as she asked in a drained voice "Tell me, what happend"? She deserved to know the truth. "The taijiya and the hoshi went with the kitsune to her old village to rebuild. Inuyasha helped them but went back to stay in his forest and protect the village of the old miko. It was a few years later. A village boy wanted to collect some mushrooms for his sick mother as a bear yokai attacked him. Inuyasha who still stayed in his forest saved the boy but was badly wounded. It was his human night and he didn´t make it. Weeks later I heard what had transpired but there was nothing I could do anymore. The old miko gave me the tetsusaiga and his prayer beads. She wanted me to give the beads to you if I ever would see you again". Kagome didn´t say a word she was in a trance-like state.

"Kagome listen, what Koenma-sama has told you is true. He got the information from me. You have to trust him and work together with his team. You will need them and they will need you. This being is too powerful. Yes, I know you are very strog and I´m proud of you but it´s not enough. He is too dangerous and there is no saying when he will attack. I only could feel his presence, that means we almost know nothing. But the youkai which were attacking you the past months were working for him. I think he tries to assess how powerful you truly are." He paused to see if she would say something but as nothing came he bent down, pushed her bangs away and kissed her on the forehead "I will be here if you need me". With that he turned to Koenma and nodded to him. Koenam bowed slightly as Sesshoumaru left the office.

Kagome still stood on her spot and looked at the prayer beads in her hands. Without turning she said in a monotonous voice "Koenma-sama, I accept your offer and will work together with you and your team. But now I want to go home".
Koenma looked to Hiei and nodded to him. Hiei knew what the toddler wanted him to do so he followed her through the portal which Botan opend for them. As they arrived at the shrine he melted into the shadows where he could watch over her and protect her. He didn´t like that but no one was as good as him to be invisible if he wanted to be. The girl wanted to be alone and that was fine with him. Fifteen minutes later Kagome left the house, dressed in a shirt, running shorts and shoes. Her hair was in a high ponytail again. Almost one hour she run aimlessly until she stood in the middle of the small forest behind her house. She stared at the prayer beads which she was holding the whole time as she was running. Hiei watched from a distance, waiting to see what her next move will be. She fell on her kness looked up into the sky and screamed. His ears were ringing by the volume and he felt uncomfortable at the anguish in it. He panicked as she suddenly let her energy free. The foolish girl will purify him and there was nothing he could do about it. Even with his speed he wasn´t fast enough to escape this amount of power which was spreading out over the whole area. Her energy was so bright he was forced to close his eyes and his body started to tingle. He was so angry, angry at the girl, angry at the brat who still tried to order him around and even himself. It was none of his business what the girl did or what the toddler wanted him to do, he shouldn´t have followed her. But then the energy started to dissipate and he opened his eyes.

Why was he alive? Didn´t she purify him? He look to where she was on her knees as he saw his surrounding. It was early in the spring time but the forest was already full of life as if the winter has not passed few weeks ago. The trees were blooming, the ground were covered with various flowers and the air was filled with the sweet smell. And there she was laying, curled up on the flowerbed and obviously asleep. Hiei sighed, he couldn´t just let her there so he picked her up and brought her back to her hous. A window on the first floor was open and he jumped in. The room was full with her scent of lavender and summerrain, it was incredibly soothing. 'So, it´s her bedroom' he thoght as he put her in the bed. He turned around to leave but she suddenly grabed his cloak and whisperd "Please, stay. I don´t want to be alone, not now." What should he do? He didn´t like this situation and he surely wasn´t the type to comfort anybody. He sighed again, as long as she just wanted to feel his presence he could fulfill her request. And so he sat down on the floor and rested against the bed. A few minutes later he could tell by her soft breathing that she was again asleep.
