CHAPTER 4

“KAGOME?!” A voice called again. “Are you home, honey?”

Inuyasha reluctantly released Kagome from the door. She gave him an apologetic look, and then opened the door.

“Yeah, momma, Inuyasha and I were just getting towels…we got caught in the storm.”

“Okay, honey. Hi! Inuyasha. How have you been?”

Inuyasha followed Kagome down the hall to the linen closet. “Fine!” He grunted, as Kagome passed him a towel.

“That’s good, dear. Now, you two come on down here for dinner.”

“Okay, momma! I’m just gonna change clothes.”

They went back into her room, and Kagome pulled a pair of jean and a sweatshirt from her dresser. Her back was to Inuyasha as she pealed of her blouse and skirt revealing her white bra and panties. Inuyasha stared wide eye. ‘What the HELL is she DOING?’ He thought.

“Uh…Kagome?”

“Yes, Inuyasha?”

But Kagome was already dresses, and heading for the door.

“Never mind.” He said following her down the stairs.

Dinner was an interesting affair, as Kagome and Inuyasha were silent once again. When they did look at each other it was difficult to tell whose blush was deeper. But no one seemed to notice.

However, the other members of the Higurashi family were a little puzzled by the silence of the two companions. Usually there was much bickering and arguing when Inuyasha visited the modern era…but that was because he was usually there to take Kagome back through the well.

“So. How is the search for the jewel shard going?” Mrs. Higurashi asked, taking a bite of steak.

“Well…I figure we only need Kouga’s, and then…” Kagome’s voice trailed off.

Inuyasha took her hand underneath the table. “And the jewel will be completed.” Inuyasha said. His voice contained a sort of finality.

Kagome was very thankful for Inuyasha’s presence. He knew she didn’t want her family to know that they would need to face Naraku to reclaim the rest of the jewel.

There was a relentless nagging in the back of all their minds. They all knew there was a VERY real possibility that they would not survive the battle.

“Inuyasha, wanna play video games after dinner?!” Souta asked.

“Sorry, kid, I gotta get back…Kagome are you coming or staying?”

Kagome looked very surprised. ‘Inuyasha is ASKING if I want to stay here or go back with him? Well, wonders never seemed to cease.’ She thought.

“Ummm? I’ll go with you. I don’t have any tests to study for…so…we might as well try to get Kouga’s shards…” She stood, starting to clear the table.

“That’s okay, dear. You don’t have to do that.”

“But momma…”

“No. Honey, it’s okay, really.

“Okay, momma. I’ll see you soon.”

Kagome walked around the table, and kissed each of her family members.

“Right. Sweetheart, you be careful. And Inuyasha,” their eyes met, “take good care of my little girl.”

Inuyasha stood. “I will. And thanks for dinner.” Then, he turned and followed Kagome out the room to the front door.

“Bye, sis! Bye, Inuyasha!”

“Bye!” They both called.

It was still raining outside, and the weather was even colder. It was particularly cold for August. Before they jumped in the well, Inuyasha grabbed Kagome’s arm. She looked at him from her crouched position on the well.

“What?” She asked.

“We need to talk.”

“That seems to be your favorite line lately.” Kagome sighed. “I thought we already ‘talked’?”

“Look.” He said seriously. “I don’t know what’s happening, but things ARE changing between us. Don’t you feel it?”

“Yes.”

“Well, then…can you explain it to me? I liked it better when we were on speaking terms.”

“I’m sorry, Inuyasha…I’m just as confused as you are…on some things. BUT I do know how I feel about you...and so do you.” She whispered. She looked down into the well. “About earlier…I had no right...but, dammit. I will not watch Kikyo drag you to hell with her!” Her voice was shaky and trembling.

“Uggghhh! Kagome we’ve been over this before! We’re just going around in circles! I PROMISED.” He said pulling her onto his back and jumping in the well and then out again. She slid off his back, and they stood facing each other. Finally, Inuyasha broke the silence.

“Besides. What do you care?!” He snapped. “You were going to leave me! Remember?! After you said you’d stay with me!”

“How dare you! How DARE you! YOU are the one who’s going to leave ME! But that’s different, RIGHT?! How dare you make this my fault?” She raised her hand to slap him, but he caught her wrist before her hand reached his cheek.

“Kagome?”

She crumpled to her knees. Inuyasha dropped in front of her and wrapped his arm around her. “I’m sorry…I’m sorry, Inuyasha…I’m sorry…”

“Kagome. It’s okay. Really. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I would NEVER intentionally hurt you…you know that…I care about you…very much. I…” He couldn’t let himself say the words he wanted to say. He trusted Kagome with his life…not with his heart…not yet, anyway.

“But…but do you…love…me? Can you ever love me?” She asked. She hated herself for putting him in this position, but she had to know how he felt about her. She raised her head to look in his eyes. She didn’t expect what she found in his glowing golden eyes. She knew then that he loved her. He might NEVER say it, but she knew.

“Please…don’t make me answer that…now, Kagome…”

She nodded, and looked up at him with a watery smile. He whipped her cheeks with the sleeve of his haori. They stared at each other for a few more minutes, and then he shook his head as if he had been in a trance.

Before Iuyasha knew what was happening, he was on his back in the mud with Kagome straddling his waist. She leaned down and kissed him hard on the mouth. After his initial shock wore off, he wrapped his arms around her back and pulled her closer. His warm tongue invaded her mouth. Even though it was cold and rainy, neither seemed to notice or care. Inuyasha broke the kiss, pushing against Kagome so he could look in her eyes.

“What are you doing?” He panted.

“I’m answering your question…when you kissed me before…you asked me if this is what I wanted…you’re all I ever wanted, Inuyasha.”

His heart beat painfully in his chest, and filled with love for the girl lying on top of him.

She started kissing him again, and ground her hips against the hardness between her legs. Inuyasha tried very hard not to moan, but the pressure in his loins was increasing by the minute and it wasn’t helping that Kagome continued to grind against him…

“Uuuuhhn…Kagome stop…” He moaned. “Please… get off”

Kagome stopped and looked at Inuyasha. His eyes were closed and he was panting.
She didn’t seem to realize how much she was testing him. She had no idea that he would love nothing more than to flip her over and have his way with her.

“Let me up.” He repeated.

She knew he could have pushed her off him if he wanted. She slowly climbed off of him and crouched low to the ground hugging her knees. The realization of what she had just done floated into her consciousness, and she covered her face in embarrassment.

“I’m s..sorry…Inuyasha…” She whispered. She flinched when he touched her shoulder. He reached out a hand to help her up, and she reluctantly accepted.

“Come on. Let’s get back to the village…I don’t want you getting sick on me.” His voice was gruff.

She reluctantly took his hand, and they walked back to the village in silence.
