Couldn't Be

AN: Just want to remind everyone that for Kagome she has just met the two, for Kurama it is already his past.

Couldn't Be

Kagome let the steaming water relax her tense muscles. She'd came home late last night and immediately went straight to bed. It was a saturday morning and the house was alive with activity. Souta and her mother were going out for the day. Grandpa was outside doing some gardening. After taking a much needed bath Kagome planned on taking a walk into town. It would do her some good to get out. She was sure Inuyasha had already tried to cross over. Before heading back she'd gotten some sutras from Miroku. He wasn't going to come and drag her back this time. All she wanted was one day of peace to enjoy her solitude.

She climbed out the bath and prepared for her journey into town. She chose to wear a pair of cut of jeans and a blue tank top. Grandpa tried to emotionally blackmail her into helping him in the yard but she refused. Her walk led her to the local shopping center. It was crowded already and she was making her way through the many bodies. The heat was causing her to sweat. 'I got to get out of this heat.' She ducked inside an antique jewelry store. The cool air blasted her, her skin silently thanked her. "Thats better."

She decided to take a look around while she was there. Only one other girl was inside, she had long brown hair, cute. Kagome started looking in the display. Most of the jewelry was older stuff. Nothing she'd ever wear nor anyone her age. One piece caught her attention, she asked the lady behidn the counter if she could take a quick look. The woman handed her the pendant, it was plain. Something about it called to Kagome's soul. "What kind of jewel is this?" It was a simple stone, large shaped like a tear dark in color.

"That piece, I'm not sure about. I got it from a swap shop actually. The woman that I bought it from told some tale about it being a soul stone. Whatever that means, tell you what. If you like it, I'll give it to you for half price. I've had it for years, no one has bothered to even look at it."

Kagome looked at the price tag. Half price, it would still take most of her money. "Okay, why not." She payed the woman and placed the necklace around her throat. She felt a jolt when it touched her flesh then nothing. "Weird." Someone bumped into her back.

The brunette blushed. "I'm sorry I thought I saw my boyfriend walk past, I wasn't paying attention."

"That's okay." Kagome smiled at the girl. She seemed friendly enough but it was time for her to get back to the shrine. She stepped back out into the heat. There was a group of people standing at the corner, debating. Kagome couldn't hear the specifics but they were blocking a good part of the walkway. None of them looked to special to her, so what gave them the right to get in everyone's way. One idiot started jumping in down causing a scene. He stepped back as soon as she tried to walk past. "Ow." His large foot came down on hers.

"Huh." Kuwabara turned at the yell. A pretty girl was standing behind him looking down at her feet.

"You idiot, watch what you're doing. You don't own the sidewalk you know." She yelled at him. He merely looked back at her confused. Her attention turned when someone cursed and the sound of something hitting the ground was heard.

Kurama saw him step back in time to collide with someone. The voice was familiar, he placed it as soon as Kuwabara turned giving him a view of the girl. He'd been holding his cell phone in his hand, it fell from his grasp to smash on the pavement. He payed it no mind as he stared at her. It couldn't be her! Yet the voice, face and smell matched. Even after all these centuries and his merger into a human body he still remembered everything about her.

Kagome saw the red head staring at her like he'd seen a ghost. He was very nice looking but rude. Why was he staring at her like that, they'd never met before. She glared back and he gasped.

It had to be her, he remembered those eyes. But it couldn't be, a few things were missing. He sniffed to make sure. Yes, this girl was still a virgin and she bore no mark.

"Well, guess you don't have any manners either. It's impolite to stare." She stormed off leaving him, staring at her back.

Yusuke turned to Kurama, "Are you okay? I know she was cute but damn."

"Yeah, for a minute I was seeing a ghost from my past." Kurama mentally shook himself. Was she a reincarnation? Or did she simply remind him a lot of her? His thoughts turned to Koronue and he frowned. For a minute there he'd also felt the presence of his old friend.

Kagome jumped into the well letting the light surround her. She wasn't sure how the hanyou would act on her return. She'd spent the night after returning home from her trip into town. After having dinner and another bath she examined the pendant in her hand. Somehow it comforted her, strange. While running her hand over it, it suddenly fell apart. "Shit," she looked at both pieces. It didn't look broken, yet it was split right down the middle. The backs were now smooth to the touch. She placed the half still attached to the chain around her neck and put the other safely away in her jewelry box.

She heard yelling the moment her feet touched solid ground. As she was climbing out she was jerked out by a very pissed off hanyou. "Watch it."

"Where the hell have you been?" Inuyasha glared at her.

"Home, I'm suprised you're here waiting."

"What the hell is that suppose to mean?" He asked.

"Nothing, lets just get going. I'm sure you are ready to head out." Kagome followed him to the village and they soon took off once more to look for Naraku.

They traveled for several days without coming across any clues to Naraku's whereabouts. Nor were they attacked by him. Usually if Naraku didn't attack he was planning something sinister. They all waited for something to happen, yet as the days went by they became restless.
