3. A Date?
Chapter Three
"So where are you guys going?"
Hiei wanted to plant his fist in the idiot's face. "None of your business fool." He knew the questions would start as soon as the girl left.
"Well I got to get going everyone," Kagome grabbed her book off the table. "It was a pleasure meeting you all and thanks for lunch." She sent a look to her friends. "I'll see you guys later. Can we talk?" She asked Hiei. He stood up and glanced back at the others. Kagome started to walk away not giving him time to answer.
She waited for him to catch up to her and began walking to the entrance. When he got beside her she thanked him again. "I appreciate what you did. I'm sure your friends are going to give you a hard time."
"I got tired of his presence within under a minute, didn't think you'd want to spend an evening in it. Think nothing of it." Hiei could feel Kurama trying to reach him mentally but kept it closed. So the fox was jealous, he wanted to laugh. As if the girl would really accept a date with him. He was the Forbidden Child, meant to be alone.
"Easy for you to say. Hojo has been after me for years maybe now he will leave me alone. You did me a great service back there." Kagome watched the emotions cross his face. Once again she felt loneliness surrounding him. Maybe he was like her and just wanted someone to talk to, that would know him for who and what he was. She had no one in this era that she could talk to. "So where and what time should I meet you tomorrow?"
"What?" Hiei stopped in his tracks.
"Well unless you are busy that is. I was really planning on staying home and reading a good book but if you aren't doing anything," she waited for him to answer.
"Hn." She was willing to spend time with him. No human female had shown him any interest and only a few select demon females did. His reputation preceeded him wherever he went. "Here, right after sunset."
"Okay, it was nice meeting you Hiei. Oh, sorry about the other day." She gave him a quick smile and rushed off towards the shrine.
Kurama watched Hiei walk off with the girl he'd been wanting to talk to while her friend continued to paw at him. He tried to communicate with the fire demon but he was being shut out. He had sensed Hiei's interest in the girl the other day but never thought he'd act on it. Hiei shunned most humans but this girl wasn't your average human. One of the reasons he was so interested himself. A few minutes later he spotted Hiei walking back with a smug smile on his face, he knew was for his benifit.
Hiei sat back down feeling everyone's eyes on him. Once again he felt Kurma probing him, this time he answered. 'What do you want?'
'You know exactly what I want don't act coy, Hiei. What was that about?'
'You heard me correctly as did everyone else. I'm sure you hearing is just fine fox.' He felt the anger radiating off his friend. 'Don't worry I am well aware of your interest in the girl also.'
'I will not deny it. I don't think I will back off either,' Kurama waited for his best friend's answer.
'Do what you will fox. Nor will I but we both know in the end it will be the girl's decision.' Hiei cut off the link deciding he was tired. He left the group there laughing as Kurama once again was removing that girl's hand.
Kurama felt him disconnect and removed the hand he felt running up his leg once again. Hiei was right ofcourse. In the end it would be the girl's choice of who she wanted to be with. He would have to find out more information from Keiko before he went home. If he could get away from these girls.
The next day Kagome helped her mother in the storage shed. They were going through boxes getting rid of some things they no longer used. "Wow, grandpa sure has a lot of old stuff in here. Looks like most of it is useless." She turned and looked at the clock. It was already after four. "Mom, mind if I get going?"
"Sure do you have plans dear?"
She blushed, "Actually I have a date in a little while. I'll have to rush if I wanna be there on time."
"A date? Thats wonderful Kagome. Do I get to meet this young man?"
"Its only one date mom. We will see how it goes," She pushed the box she had been working on away. She made her way to her room and quickly jumped in the shower. 'Am I really going to meet him? What will we do? Am I ready to move on? Do I really want to spend time with Hiei. Its just one date girl. If anything you might have a friend. But when I look at him its not as a friend. I never once tried to picture Miroku without his clothes on.' She mentally kicked herself and jumped out the shower.
She chose a black skirt and a blue turtle neck, minus the sleeves and blue flats to complete the outfit. She decided to wear her hair pulled back in a loose ribbon. Was she overdoing it? Would he even notice the extra time she'd taken with her appearance. Before her cold feet could set in she headed out the door.
Kagome headed towards the park, walking to make sure she didn't get there too early. The sun was begining to set as she cleared the entrance. The sight was beautiful and she stood there for several minutes taking in the view. She jumped when someone landed beside her.
Hiei had watched her enter the park from his position in the tree. He jumped down to land beside her causing her to jump in suprise. "Hmph."
"Where did you come from?" Kagome was sure she hadn't seen him upon entering. He didn't answer merely stood there looking at her. 'Okay something tells me he isn't much for talking. Guess I can understand that.' She took the time to inspect him. He was wearing a pair of blue jeans and a white tshirt. For some reason he still had the white cloth wrapped around his forehead. She looked up at it and felt her powers jerk. They were reacting to his forehead for some reason, "Whats under the there?"
"What makes you think there is anything?" Hiei saw her gaze rest on his jagan.
"Don't play coy with me. The same reason I know you are a demon. I'm not sure what kind yet but give me time." She took a step forward bringing her hand up. He didn't move back like she thought he would but stood his ground. She placed her hand near the eye and gasped as images flew through her mind. She saw him as a baby being thrown off a cliff. His young years growing up with thieves, him getting the third eye implanted. Then she saw him as he met the young boy that she knew was Kurama and then Yusuke and the other big mouth guy. Images of him fighting and coming near death passed her eyelids.
Hiei had thought it safe to let her come close as long as he kept the jagan closed. He felt it pulse and her intake of breath. His life flashed before his eyes causing him to growl. He backed away far enough to break the connection to the girl. Why had his jagan acted out? He watched her fall to her knees and begin to cry.
Kagome hadn't understood everything she'd seen but knew it had been his life. A life of loneliness and despair. Only the last few years of it did he find friends. A name called to her soul, "The Forbidden Child." Her heart cried for the boy that hadn't known love or compassion. She fell to her knees and felt the tears fall. She had been right, here was someone who needed love and acceptance more than she did. She rose to her feet and he was still standing there watching her. Without thinking she threw her arms around him and hugged him.
Hiei's first reaction was to push the girl away. One minute she'd been crying and the next throwing herself in his arms. What had she seen? Then it occured to him, she'd seen what he'd seen. For some unknown reason his jagan had showed his memories to the strange girl now embracing him. Then why was she crying? Was she crying for him? He didn't return the embrace nor did he push her away. He stood there and enjoyed the feel of her body pressed against his. She had her head resting on his shoulder giving him the opportunity to smell her hair. It smelt like jasmine and of her. He felt his body react to her scent. His hand reached up on its own to touch stroke her hair feeling it slide between his fingers.
Kagome pulled herself together and found that she liked being close to him. Sure he wasn't holding her back, but was that him playing with her hair? She pulled back and smiled at him. 'He must think I'm stupid.' "Sorry, I tend to get emotional."
"An understatement," he'd meant to offend her but she merely smiled at him. She pulled away from him and grabbed his hand, "Lets go for a walk."
They walked for several minutes, yet she never released his hand. The touch was comforting to them both. She broke the silence, asking what exactly was underneath his bandana and what kind demon he was. He soon found himself talking which was unusual for him. She was pulling him out of his shell, something that had taken the fox years to do. She did it within under an hour. She began to tell him of her life at her family shrine and that she came from a long line of priests.
"So you are a miko?"
"Yes, not a very good one though." She told him of her practising to get better control of her powers. For several hours she talked mostly while he listened throwing a question in here and there. She looked at her watch and saw that it was after ten o'clock and figured she should head home. He informed her that he would walk with her.
Hiei walked beside the girl and listened intently. Usually human conversations bored him within five minutes. This girl had a way of keeping his attention which he could not understand. Was it because he could answer and not guard his answers. Was it because he could be himself without regard of the outcome? Either way he enjoyed her company and was disappointed when they reached the steps leading up to the shrine. She paused at the bottom of the step and looked at him.
'Wonder if he will try to kiss me goodnight. Probably not, I'm sure he will be glad to get away from me and my nervous chatter. Do I want him to kiss me? Yes I do.' She sighed when he made no move towards her. Giving up any hope she decided to hug him instead. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders pulling him into a light hug. "Thank you, I really enjoyed spending the evening with you Hiei."
He felt her arms wrap around him and pull him into an embrace. He brought his hands up to hold onto her back. He held her tight as she thanked him. He felt her pulling back but didn't loosen his hold on her. She pulled back so her face was only a few inches away from his. His eyes traveled down her face to land on her lips. Without thinking he closed the distance between them bringing his lips to meet hers.
Kagome felt her heart stop when he closed the distance to kiss her. A small jolt shot through her body as he deepened the kiss. His tongue was running over her lower lip and she opened her mouth for him. It slid into her mouth causing her to moan at the contact. She brought hers to meet his enjoying the way it felt. The kiss lasted only a few minutes before he pulled back releasing her.
He simply stood there staring at her. Assuming he didn't know what to say, she placed a quick kiss on his lips. "Good night Hiei."
"Good night, Kagome." He watched her run up the step until she was out of sight.
Hiei waited till she was out of view before saying, "Come out Kurama." He felt the fox's presence as he was kissing the girl so he'd broken it off.
"I'm suprised you sensed me. You seemed to be rather engaged." Kurama stepped into light. He had decided to take a walk and ended up at the address Keiko had given him. He'd turned the corner in time to see Hiei kiss the girl. His first instinct had been to tear the girl out his friend's arms but he had no right. She didn't know of his interest in her yet but she would soon.
"Did you enjoy the show?" Hiei felt his friend's anger. If it had been any other girl he would have stepped aside. This one he wouldn't, he wanted the girl. He didn't want to lose the best friend he had either.
"Seems we might have a problem, my friend." Kurama walked up to him and sighed. He knew he was the closest friend Hiei had. But he had smelt Hiei's scent change as he kissed the girl and knew his friend wouldn't step aside. "I don't want to fight with you Hiei. I don't want to lose you as a friend."
"Then what do you suggest?" Hiei was open for any ideas as long as it didn't concern him backing off.
"I'm not sure what the girl's reaction to me persuing her will be yet. I mean to have her though." He paused wondering how his friend would take his suggestion. "If the time comes and if she is willing, we could share her."
