Chapter Two
The trip to the family shrine was made in complete noise, leaving Kagome with a tension headache. The girls had questions about every building they passed and every crack in between. Eventually, the steps leading to her family home came into view causing a sigh to escape her lips. 'Home after all these years. Will momma welcome me? Will Souta still be here?' Regret for losing contact with her family assualted her. But she had to leave it had been the only way for her.
The taxi pulled to the curb, the driver hurriedly unloaded the luggage. There were six suitcases in all, plus the handbags each female carried. "Here ya go." Kagome payed the man who was looking behind the vehicle, oggling her children. A small growl escaped her lips alerting him she was aware of his behavior. Of course she could understand his staring, being teens the girl had matured into beautiful young women. Both were wearing cut off jeans, showing off their long legs and trim waist. Tank tops hugged very filled out chests, both shirts ending mid-stomach. Both had piercings much to their mother's disapproval. After months of debating she'd agreed to the belly button and tongue. When eyebrows and other things were mentioned she had drawn the line. There was no way she was signing consent forms for THAT. For their sixtenth birthdays, the girls had spent a weekend in Miami, Florida. And both had came home with tattoes on their person. They weren't bad, just how the hell did they manage to get them. Lied about thier age most likely. Standing side by side, on Kimi's right shoulder and Michiko's left, were two tigers facing each other, claws drawn as if preparing to battle the other.
The cabi turned to face her, "So how long will you lovely ladies be staying?" he wasn't bad looking for an older man. His hair was black streaked with some grey.
"Not sure, but its nice to be home." Kagome smiled at him deciding it was best to be polite.
"Well if you going to be around for awile I know of this nice place downtown."
"YOU WISH GRANDPA!!!!" Michiko grabbed her mother's hand and scowled at him. If looks could kill the driver would have been left rotting under his own ride. "Step off, like you'd ever have a chance."
"Heh, sorry," she let her daughter drag her up the steps leaving a gaping mouth behind.
Kimi grabbed her suitcases deciding to come back for the others. She paused to take in her new home or what she could see of it. The buildings seemed to be well taken care off, from here a large tree could be spotted. And there had to be atleast a thousand steps to the top. Groaning she turned to the man still standing watching her family walk away, "Are you still here?"
Kagome's homecoming was very tearful, with lots of smiles. Her grandfather had passed a few years ago but her mom and Souta met her at the top of stairs. Her mother embraced her, "Kagome, you're back. We've missed you so, don't you leave us again. I forbid it do you hear me. You are on restriction young lady." Her hair had turned grey and she had aged gracefully.
Souta was full grown, instead of a young boy a young man stood infront of her. "Hey sis, wow you got old." He stood five and nine, now towering over his sister.
"Who you calling old you twerp?" She embraced her brother hugging him for the years shed missed him. Everything had changed but nothing was different. This was still her home, where she belonging. It had taken her coming back to realize it. Her memories were here and she was going to remember them. Introductions were made, her family became whole once more. Only one person was missing and he was forever lost to her.
Kagome was put in her old room and the girls were put in the spare room deciding not to be split apart. Dinner was a joyful occasion, she informed her family what had occured since she'd left leaving out a few details. All through the evening a set of mournful eyes kept drifting outside.
Michiko threw herself on the bed causing the headboard to crash against the wall. "Oops." A week had come and gone since their arrival. "Hey can I ask you something?"
"What is it now?" Kimi pulled off her socks disposing of them in the hamper.
"First, did you really have to take them off I can smell your feet now." A sock was thrown in her lap as a reply. " I was kind of hoping that when we came here mom would cheer up. Change of scenery and all that but something seems to be troubling her. I don't think its dad either."
"Hmmm, you might be right for once. I heard her crying last night when I went downstairs last night. She hasn't cried for dad in weeks. So why now? I'm sure she misses him like we both do. Shes hiding something from us just don't know what it could be." She joined her sister on the bed. "We could always ask but knowing mom she'd lie and say everything was peachy. Thinking of peachy have you seen my orange tongue ring? Its not in my box."
"Screw your tongue ring. Mom is really depressed and I don't like it."
"Chill, don't get your panties in a knot. We could always spy on her." Kimi jumped off the bed. "I got it! Ok, the other day I saw mom go into the old storage shed. She didn't come out for atleast an hour and came out crying. Get some clothes on your ass and lets sneak out there. There's got to be some clue out there right."
"Great idea, suprised you were able to think of it. Kudos girl."
"Eat me, I'm not the blonde here remember. Now get dressed."
Five minutes later two shadows crept down the stairs making their way out the back door and across the lawn. They only made it halfway across before they heard their mother's voice.
"Did I do the right thing? Why does it still hurt after all this time? I made a mistake coming back here, I should have known being here would bring it all back. How can I love you after everything? Are you happy with Kikyo? Inuyasha." Kagome sagged to the ground in front of the god tree. She had tried to be strong but it wasn't enough. Sobs filled the air, covering up the foot steps that indicated that she had visitors.
"Who's Inuyasha?"
She turned to meet both their questioning eyes. "Girls, what are you doing out here?"
"We could ask you the same but the answer is obvious, mom." Kimi ran and threw herself into her mother's arms. "Tell us, we wanna know. Don't leave us in the dark anymore." They helped their mother to the bench each taking a side. And under the night sky she told them of her journey and of her first love. Hours passed but they never interrupted, taking in the strange tale of their mother's younger years. They never doubted a word she spoke. Morning came, sun spilled its first rays upon the threesome sitting in the shade of the tree where she first met him.
"Well, if you ask me he sounds like an idiot." Michiko grabbed her hands squeezing them trying to give her strength. "Mom, you are hot what guy in his right mind would turn you down? Even now, you got it going on."
"You miss them dont you?" Kimi stood up and started pacing. "Why don't you see them? Maybe seeing them again will help. After all, you never got to say goodbye. You never got closure."
"I can't the well was sealed after I came back. I tried but its not possible. I would give anything to see them again if only for a few minutes." She was yanked to her feet and proceded to be dragged into the house. "Girls."
"Get dressed and meet us outside in five minutes. We won't take no for an answer, you got to atleast try. Or you will never forgive yourself." Kimi pushed her mom into the bedroom. "And make sure to pack a bag incase you wanna stay a few days."
'Should I try again. Would the well let me through? What if it doesn't? Better yet what if it does? Am I ready to see everyone again? So many questions I'm going to lose my mind. But I wanna try. No matter what happens I have my girls.' Kagome through open her door. "Mom, do you still have my yellow bag?"
Thrity minutes later all three stood in front of the wellhouse along with Souta and her mother.
"Kagome, are you sure you wanna try this? What if you can't get through? Please don't do this to yourself." Mrs. Higurashi pleaded with her daughter. She couldn't stand to see her daughter disappointed again.
"I have to try mom, this is something I have to do. Besides no matter what happens, they will be with me." She smiled at her mother, hope shining in her eyes once more. 'They have the jewel within them so maybe, just maybe it will work. And she had taught them how to defend themselves.' She hugged her, "Wish me luck."
"Good luck dear," they entered the well house and jumped both girls holding a hand.
