Chapter 4. A Promise Broken
InuYasha sat in silence, listening to the voice coming from inside lady Kaede’s small hut. He could hear Kagome whispering to the others, her voice angry and scared at the same time. He heard Miroku sigh and say something under his breath and Sango say that it wasn’t the hanyou’s fault.
“He attacked me, and he knew he was doing it,” Kagome roared, eyes bulging.
“Kagome, I don’t believe that to be true,” Sango said politely. “You remember the other times he wasn’t holding tetsuiga and his ful demon for came out, it was just like that.”
“But he was holding tetsuiga,” Miroku said, sitting cross-legged, one hand on his chin.
“Ye do not know how he became a full demon?” Kaede asked, sitting in front of the small burning fire.
“We have no idea,” Sango said with a sigh.
“Ye must be careful children,” Kaede said, using her serious, motherly-tone. “If InuYasha can become full demon while still holding tetsuiga, ye can all be in trouble.”
“What should we do?” Miroku asked.
“That I do not know child,” Kaeda sighed. “This old woman grows wearier by the day, and my memory is fading.”
“We understand, Kaeda,” Kagome said politely. ‘We’ll have to watch him.”
“The mark on, InuYasha’s neck, tell me of that,” Kaede said, watching the fire flicker.
“He seemed to get angry when Kagome sat him,” Sango said, looking at the elderly miko. “The mark on his neck was pulsating large amounts of demon energy.”
“True, the mark was definitely the source of the problem,” Miroku agreed.
“Ye believe the demon who marked, InuYasha, is fault for this? Kaede asked.
“Completely,” Kagome mumbled.
“I’m not so sure about that, kagome,” Miroku said, getting the women around the room to focus on him, listening to his conclusion.
“If I am correct, and lady Kaede can verify me on this, it is the demon mating season,” Mirkou said. “During the red moons nigh.”
“Ah, that it is,” Kaeda said. “I had forgotten.”
“Demon’s, male and female, go into a sort of ‘heat’ that surrounds their entire body, attracting mates.” Kagome put a finger under her chin, resting her head, letting the information absorb. Sango ran a hand in Kilala’s fur, the little demon mewing to her as it snuggled her chest, caressing it’s wounded back with it’s two tales.
“How does that explain InuYasha’s attitude?” Kagome asked.
“InuYasha, being half-demon, can also go into heat like a female and attract the opposite or same sex. He had probably attracted a same sex demon, got bitten, and absorbed some of that demons internal power, making him more prone to lashing out,” Miroku explained.
“What do ye plan to do?” Kaede asked.
“We needed to monitor, InuYasha, closely, make sure he doesn’t lash out,” Miroku said, nodding to the three women. “We will also have to watch for the demon that marked him. When InuYasha began to growl, it was a call.”
“You mean, he was calling his mate,” Sango gasped.
Miroku nodded.
‘That’s what attacked you,” Kagome whispered. “I saw it, but only a blur. I thought it was Sesshomaru, but he would have killed us.”
“I don’t see Sesshomaru mating with InuYasha anyway, those to hate each another,” Sango said in a matter-of-fact kind of way.
“So we will watch for the mate,” Miroku said, looking around the woman again, who nodded. “If InuYasha becomes restless or is disturbed in any way, he will become full demon again and probably call the mate, wanting his help.”
InuYasha stood and walked away from the hut, had heard enough of their conversation to get thoroughly annoyed that they were deciding things for him. He could handle the situation himself, and if it was true Sesshomaru had given InuYasha some of his power, that meant completing the mating mark was to give him full demon control. He looked up at the rising half-moon, staring at the large round orb with dull eyes.
‘Come back soon brother.’
*~*~*
“InuYasha, what are you doing? Kagome asked, looking up at the hanyou resting in a tree. “I thought you said you’d help us around the village?”
“I’m tired,” InuYasha mumbled, rolling over on the branch.
Kagome’s eyebrow twitched, but she kept calm. She knew if she even made InuYasha feel distressed, he would go ballistic on her. She also had to control her ‘sit boys’ or suffer the consequences later.
“Fine, stay up their,” Kagome grumbled.
InuYasha sighed and rolled again, resting his head on an arm, waiting, listening to the rustle of the trees around him and sniffing the air, looking for the scent of his demon mate. His ear twitched at a noise, but knew it wasn’t his elder, knowing he wouldn’t be rolling in the bushes.
“InuYasha,” Shippo cried.
The small fox pup jumped up into the tree, landing on the hanyou’s stomach with a plop, shocking the hanyou into defense mode. He growled at the pup, but stopped when he smelt the familiar scent of the fox. He adopted a frown, staring into the blue eyes of the small fox, waiting for what he wanted.
“Who are you waiting for?” Shippo asked.
“No body,” InuYasha murmured.
“Your waiting for someone aren’t you...”
“I said no.”
“Tell me.”
“No.”
“Please?”
“I said no.”
“Why not?”
“BECAUSE I SAID NO.”
The village stilled, everyone turning to the angry half-demons voice rising above them a low growl echoing through the huts. Sango and Miroku looked at one another, grabbing their things before heading off toward the hanyou, knowing something had already upset him, and they had been doing great all day to make InuYasha less stressed.
“InuYasha, wait... I didn’t mean anything I was just.”
“Back off kid,” InuYasha growled, eyes flooding with red.
Sango and Miroku approached the tree InuYasha was standing in, a frightened Shippo backing away form him, eyes bulging at the enraged hanyou. Miroku looked at Sango and Sango looked at InuYasha, both worried.
“Shippo, come here,” Sango called.
The fox pup didn’t need a second invitation. He jumped from the branch and into Sango’s waiting arms, away from the growling hanyou. InuYasha turned his gaze on Sango and Miroku, eyes still red with rage.
“InuYasha, calm down,” Miroku warned. “Just keep calm, he meant nothing by it.”
To their surprise, InuYasha did calm himself, eyes returning to normal as he flopped back down onto the branch, staring back out into the forest, waiting for Sesshomaru once again. Both Sango and Miroku sighed, turning and walking away, taking second glances at the hanyou before completely walking off, the village returning to normal.
*~*~*
Sesshomaru walked toward Kaede’s village, taking his time, Jaken and Rin on his tale, not daring o ask him any questions. The moment he had returned to them from helping InuYasha and mating with him once again, they had asked non-stop questions, enraging the demon lord and making him lash out at them, eyes burning red.
They now walked in silence, no one looking at the other, only forward or the ground. Rin seemed to take in interest in Ah Un’s long mane, petting it now and then from where she sat atop the large two-headed serpent demon. She looked down at Jaken who was holding the beasts reins, following his lord’s footsteps without a sound, carrying the staff of two heads.
“Lord Jaken, why do you think Lord Sesshomaru is acting so oddly?” Rin asked.
Jaken did not answer.
“Lord Jaken?”
No answer.
“Jaken?”
“What?” Jaken asked quietly.
“I said, why do you think lord Sesshomaru is acting so oddly?” the girl repeated.
“I do not know, he has never acted like this before.”
The both noticed Sesshomaru’s ears twitch, telling them he was listening. They looked ahead, their conversation over and Sesshomaru back to his musing, looking ahead ans nowhere else, walking toward the village InuYasha resided in.
A cloud of dark gases began to cloud the sky, shadowing out the sun and the bright clouds that beamed overhead. Jaken and Rin both looked up, Ah Un stopping to look us well, it’s two heads staring up into the dark sky. Sesshomaru stopped, a deep rumbling growl starting in stomach and vibrating from his throat, noting that he didn’t like the threat.
“How are you my dear, Sesshomaru? A familiar male voice cooed.
“Naraku, what do you want dwelling around lord Sesshomaru?” Jaken scolded.
“I have only come to claim what rightfully belongs to me,” Naraku whispered silkily.
“Hmpf, you must have a death wish,” Jaken said, turning up his face and looking away.
“Leave, Naraku, I have no business with you,” Sesshomaru said with a deep throaty growl that caused shivers.
“Wrong, my dear lord, Sesshomaru,” Naraku said, appearing from his cloud.
“I thought you were after InuYasha?” Sesshomaru said.
“Oh, I am, but there is something you have I want,” Naraku laughed throatily.
“Oh!” Sesshoamru’s interest had heightened.
“Your sword,” Naraku said.
“I have two.”
“The one you claimed for your father,” Naraku pointed to Tenseiga.
“You want a worthless sword?” Sesshomaru asked.
“On the contrary, that sword is more useful than you know,” Naraku said, an insane smiled on his pale face.
Sesshomaru glared.
“With that sword, I will be invincible,” Naraku whispered. “Your sword gives life, and protects that which holds it. With it, your precious brother can do nothing to me.”
If you want my fathers sword...” Sesshomaru unsheathed his Toukijin. “You will have to kill me for it.
“That, I can arrange.”
Naraku jumped from his cloud, sliding toward Sesshomaru with ease. His demon tentacles collided with Sesshomaru’s blade, bouncing of the blade with a loud clang. They broke apart, diving at one another, slicing into one another with their claws (and for Sesshomaru his sword). They parted again, staring one another down. Waiting for the perfect moment.
Jaken ran forward. “Staff of two heads.”
A blast of flame ran across Naraku, burning away many of his tentacles. He smirked at Jaken, slamming his long tales at the toad demon, knocking him off his feet. Sesshomaru found his chance, diving forward and slicing Naraku’s arms from his body. The demon glared at Sesshomaru, slamming one of his long black whips into the side of the youkai’s body, knocking his away, and in the process, knocking Tenseiga from Sesshomaru’s belt.
The two demons watched at the sword landed in the dirt blade down, glowing with a light blue hue. Naraku smirked and dove for the blade, growing a new arm and reaching out for it. Sesshomaru dove in front of him, cutting through his tentacles and knocking Naraku back. Naraku sat up slowly, black eyes boring into Sesshomaru’s yellow ones.
“You will pay for that,” the half-demon hissed.
Naraku unleashed on of his poisonous tentacles, aiming for Rin. The small girl gasped, stepping back and falling into the grass, to afraid to move. She screamed, moving ana rm in front of her face, waiting for the impact... it never came.
Sesshomaru ran across the grass, intent on protecting Rin from the danger. He stopped, spreading his arms, back to Naraku, staring ahead of him. The long poisonous tentacle moved in slow motion through his body, making a disgusting squirting noise, blood spilling onto the grassy field. The tip of the tentacle shot through his chest, bursting through his kimono, blood spraying onto the grass on onto Rin’s arm and hair. He arched, feeling his feet start to rsie from the ground as the tentacle was embedded further into his body, making dusgusting squirting and crunching noises against his bones and flesh.
Everything went still. Naraku grabbed Tenseiga, leaving his long tentacle embedded in the demon lords body, pushing it through even further. Sesshomaru stood without an emotion on his face, neck splattered his warm blood that itched him. Rin moved her hands from her face, staring up the long legs of her lord, the long tentacle wiggling inside his body. She gasped, trying to stand, but her legs would not let her.
“Thank you, lord Sesshomaru,” Naraku said, holding up the tenseiga. “This weapon will do me just fine.”
The tentacle shot from Sesshomaru’s body, making him stumbled backward and fall into the grass, dark warm blood pooling around his arms and head, inking his hair with a glow of red. Rin crawled to him, her breath coming in slow shaky pants. She placed her hands on the youkai’s chest, her fingers curling around the wound he had been inflicted.
The cloud of poison gas dissipated, the clear sky returning to them, the bright sun shining down on them, clouds rolling across the blue sky above. A gentle breeze pushed it’s way into the field, almost like it had been hiding from the demon, Naraku, until he had gone before moving it’s way across the large open grassland.
“Lord Sesshomaru,” the young girl whispered.
Jaken bounced up to Sesshomaru, his eyes teary and stunned. She flopped down onto the lord stomach, crying out loud, his small kimono dipping into the crimson blood, staining his pant legs. Rin sat opposite him, tears in her own eyes, staring into the blank stare of her lord, who seemed to be watching the sky, eyes half-lidded.
“Rin. Jaken.”
Both looked up at Sesshomaru, his head never turning to either of them, just staring into the sky, watching the clouds roll by, more blood pooling around his body, staining into the grassed and the soil, making it boil from his demon blood. Sesshomaru’s eyes dulled, his yellow pools becoming a dull hue of silver-grey. He blinked once, a drop of blood from one of his lashes dropping onto his cheek, rolling down his marke dface and dripping from his ear into the pool of blood surrounding him.
“Go to the village InuYasha is in,” Sesshomaru said softly, his voice becoming weak. “Tell him I am sorry I could not make it and that I love him. Tell him this for me, Rin.”
The girl nodded.
“Jaken, I free you, you have repaid your dept to me.”
“My lord... I would never leave you.”
“I free you, Jaken. Go.”
“Lord Sesshomaru...” Tears ran down Rin’s cheek, dropping onto her small hand. “I will deliver the message, I promise.”
“Tell him I also sorry for breaking my promise, young Rin. Tell him that for me...”
“I will.”
Sesshomaru closed his eyes, another small breath of wind passing over the field, long silver hair dancing in the wind, tipped red, and died away, lying splayed across the field where the body of a youkai lord lay alone, eyes closed as a single silent tear ran down his paling face.
‘I will always love you... InuYasha.’
*~*~*
Yellow eyes looked up into the moon rising from afar, it’s silver light casting down on the small village in the distance. The sun set opposite it, casting colors of purple, blue, green and pink into the sky, spreading far for all to see. Snowy white ears perked, still listening for the sound of an approaching youkai, but heard none. He sniffed the air, but did not smell the familiar scent. His ears dropped.
‘You broke your promise.’
The hanyou jumped form the tree, walking back toward the small hut with a warm yellow glow moving through the small wooden window. He walked onto the small veranda, sitting down cross-legged, eyes closed as he placed his ears down in his silver hair.
“InuYasha?”
No answer.
“Are you okay?”
Still no answer.
“Kagome, leave him. He looks like he is in thought.”
“Hmm, alright Miroku. Here’s a plate of food InuYasha, if your hungry.”
‘Sesshomaru... why?’

‘Sesshomaru... why?’
