Chapter 4
Evyn ran into the kitchen, now wearing boxers and pulling on his shirt. “Mom! I’m ba—Oh, Kai…”
The track captain, who sat at the table nodded to the boy. “Hello Evyn.”
Evyn tugged his shirt hem down. “Hi. You’re early.”
Kai’s eyes travelled over the boy. “Is thabad bad thing?”
“No! I should change though. What are we going to do?”
Kai shrugged and stood up, giving Evyn a chance to look over the captain. He wore black jeans, a white shirt and a navy blue jacket. “See a movie, go for a drive, dinner and maybe walk in the park. Not in that order though.”
“I thought we were going to the track again…”
Kai laughed and Evyn blushed faintly. “No, I just want to get to know you and show you around. This is a new town for you, right?” Evyn nodded shyly.
Kyoko smirked. “He brought you flowers. Isn’t that sweet?”
Both boys reddened. “That was a housewarming present, Mrs Romikoto!”
“Right… Evyn, you don’t plan to go out with Kai in boxers, do you?”
At that Evyn turned bright red. “MOM! I’ll be right back Kai.”
Kyoko watched her son leave, smiling, before speaking to Kai. “You like him, don’t you?”
Kai tilted his head. “He’s a likable person, anyone would like to be his friend.”
“I mean in a more than friends way.”
“W-what?”
She chuckled. “Don’t worry boy, I won’t tell him. There’s only one other person I know who can make him that shy.”
Kai opened his mouth to reply but Evyn walked back in, wearing a black, sleeveless shirt and a pair of tight, black pants. He was carrying his jacket in one arm and what looked like a kitten in the other. “Mom, this is Kilala. I’m supposed to take care of her. Could you watch her while I’m out?”
“Of course. How long are you going to be gone?”
“I’ll be back later!”
Kyoko shook her head. “Stay with Kai tonight. Your overnight bag is in the hallway.”
“Umm… O~kay… Let’s go Kai.”
She watched the two boys leave the room and then sighed, petting the demon. “Well, Evyn is shy as long as Kai doesn’t try to sleep with him…”
---
Kagome climbed out of the well, Inu Yasha following with Shippo, Sango and Miroku on his back. He glared at his passengers. “Why are you tagging along again?”
Sango sighed. “I’m here—”
“Not you Sango. Shippo! Why are you here?”
Shippo was now sitting on Kagome’s shoulder. “I wanted to see Kagome’s time. It’s so different…”
“Sango, Miroku, get off of me. Come here you little runt!”
“Inu Yasha, sit! We need to find Evyn. Can you smell him?”
“Yeah, yeah… he went that way.”
Kagome blinked, staring in the direction the hanyou was pointing. “That’s not the way to his house…”
“It’s the old shrine path.”
Kagome jumped. “Grandpa!”
Inu Yasha frowned. “What do you mean?”
“The old shrine path leads to a second shrine, maintained by miko. It was guarded throughout feudfeudal era to this day by the same family until 15 years ago.”
“Why? What happened 15 years ago?”
“The youngest daughter, the one to succeed in the maintenance of the shrine, left for America almost 17 years ago. She hasn’t returned since and her mother died two years after she left.”
Miroku frowned. “What about the other children?”
“They’d need to have trained from birth, and they’re all in Europe or America now. Poor lady never did see her daughter’s child…”
“Isn’t there a priest at the shrine anyway?”
“No, only miko. Any men that came from the line disappeared.”
“Really…”
“Hey, Miroku, we’re leaving!”
“Come on lecher!!”
As they followed the path, Miroku tapped Kagome on the shoulder. “Kagome, this America… Is it a a village?”
“Umm… It’s kind of like a large island, across the ocean…”
“Ah.”
The group continued down the path, Inu Yasha sniffing the air from time to time. Kagome sensed an aura of rage and hostility directly solely at her. In came from all around her, and her friends hadn’t sensed it yet. She knew that the being wouldn’t attack her, not just yet. The aura directed at the others was a content one, so why was she being singled out? “Inu Yasha, are we almost there?”
“I don’t know… Hey there’s the shrine.”
The groups stepped into the clearing around the shrine and Kagome stared. “This place looks fami—AH!!”
A dagger lodged itself a few inches from Kagome’s feet and a voice floated out of the supposedly abandoned shrine. “Come any closer and I won’t aim to miss!”
“Who the hell are you?”
A woman walked out of the shrine and Kagome gaped. “Mrs Romikoto?!”
Kyoko blinked. “Kagome?”
---
“Sorry about the sword but no one uses that path except Evyn and myself.”
“Really? I was wondering, where is Evyn?”
“He’s out with Kai. I don’ think he’ll be back tonight. Why don’t you come back tomorrow, around noon?”
“Oh, okay…”
“Kagome… Miroku, Shippo, Inu Yasha and I are going to stay, just in case.”
“Well, you three I could keep at my house, but Inu Yasha… My friends are coming over for a while tomorrow and… I don’t know…”
Kyoko smirked. “He can stay here.”
“Umm…”
“Really?”
“Of course!”
“Thanks Mrs Romikoto.”
“But…”
“Don’t worry ’bout it!”
“Bye Inu Yasha. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“I…” But Kagome had already left. Inu Yasha sighed. “Whatever.”
“So…”
He turned, startled. “How’d you get so close with me noticing you?”
“Inu Yasha?”
“Uhh, yeah…?”
“How far have you and Koga gotten?”
“WHAT?!”
Kyoko sighed and sat back, giving Inu Yasha his personal space back. “You know… Have you kissed? Had sex?”
“Uhh…”
“Hey! Kyo-chan, you here?!”
Kyoko turned to the sound. “That must be him. Oi, wolfie, we’re in here!!”
Inu Yasha blinked. “Him?”
A man with long, black hair walked in. His hair was pulled back into a ponytail and he had startling blue eyes. He wore faded blue jeans and a loose, black shirt. “Hey Kyo-chan.”
“Where’s Kokoro? I thought he was coming too.”
“He’s watching over your pup Kyo. He’ll be here soon. Who’s the kid?”
“Hey!! Who you calling kid? Who do you think you are?”
The man smirked as a spark of recognition flashed in his eyes. “I’ll show you.” Inu Yasha was then facing a fully-grown wolf demon, reminding him of Koga.
“Hello. I’m here, is anyone home?”
“Kokoro, is that you?”
“Yes Kyoko. Is wolf boy here?”
The black haired demon turned to the door. “In here love!”
Inu Yasha blinked, confused for the second time. “Kyoko, Kokoro… he’s…”
Kyoko smiled, reminding the hanyou of his mother for a fleeting moment. “Kokoro is a demon as well; a half-demon.”
“Okay… This just keeps getting weirder and weirder…”
Kokoro walked in, carrying a grocery bag. He wore dark, navy blue jeans and a white shirt. His golden eyes were partially hidden behind orange-red tinted sunglasses and his white hair fell exactly the same way as Inu Yasha’s. In build he had broader shoulders than the wolf demon, and taller as well. A pair of dog ears graced his head.
The wolf demon leapt at Kokoro, capturing the other man’s lips. Inu Yasha stared at the couple in interest. Kokoro broke the kiss and handed the groceries to Kyoko, who disappeared back into the kitchen. The wolf demon turned and watched as Kokoro sat down, motioning for Inu Yasha to sit with him. After a few moments of silence, Kokoro turned to the wolf demon, slightly amused.
“Seiyeru, what are you doing? You usually aren’t this restrained.”
“I… The kid…”
“I’m not a kid!”
Kokoro smirked. “I don’t care. Come here Sei.”
Seiyeru smiled and practically jumped into Kokoro’s lap. Inu Yasha stared as Seiyeru began nipping at Kokoro’s neck. These people, they were so strange yet so familiar. Why? “Uhh…”
Kyoko walked back in and set a tray of food onto the table between the two dog demons before sitting down. “Seiyeru told me you were watching Evyn…”
“Your pup hasn’t done anything stupid yet, like try to get into Kai’s pants.”
Kyoko sighed. “Thank god.”
“Yet. They’re making eyes at each other though.”
She groaned. “What’s he going to do about Kaine if he does something with Kai…?”
Kokoro’s ears pricked. “Kaine? You mean Evyn has a lover?”
Kyoko rolled her eyes. “His master."
“What?! When?”
Seiyeru snickered, resting his head against his lover’s shoulder. “They grow up so fast…”
“Last year. Kaine’s three years older than Evyn.”
“Ah…”
“Inu Yasha, Kokoro has something to tell you.”
The hanyou looked surprised. “Really?” Across from him Kokoro sighed and pulled out a sword, which immediately caught his attention. “That’s the tetseiga… How…?”
“Seiyeru knows you quite well, Inu Yasha, and his real name isn’t Seiyeru, obviously. It’s Koga.”
“Okay…”
The boy looked dazed as Kokoro too a breathe and carried on. “And the reason I carry the tetseiga is because it was given to me, by my father. I am you.”
“…”
Kyoko stared at the boy, who looked like he was in shock. “Inu Yasha…?”
“WHAT?!!!”
