Dark and Stormy Night

Ok, everyone, as promised I have updated! I hope you guys like this chapter....I've worked very hard on it. It saddens me to say there are no Lemons...and there probably won't be any for a while. But they will come, I promise. I just think it's important to have a story to go around the Lemons...haha. Call me old fashion. Anyways...ENJOY! {theMaven: So you picked up on my little joke huh? lol}

{Note: I don't own InuYasha or any of it's characters. Oh, but the things I would do if I did...wink wink ^ . ~ }

Chapter 4: Dark and Stormy Night

Yes, Sesshoumaru remembered the day well, it was only a few months before Rin's 16th birthday. She had been acting strange all that week, and Sesshoumaru knew perfectly well why that was. It was nearing the anniversary of the day that her family was slaughtered.

Sesshoumaru knew this day well, as Rin slumped into a depressed state during this time of the year. It was, in fact, the only time she ever acted in this manner. She spent the entire day avoiding everyone. She stayed in her quarters and only came down for meals. She didn't speak to Sesshoumaru or to Jaken, even when he tried to get her riled up. She just looked at him with a sadness on her sweet face. It pained Sesshoumaru to see his little Rin this way, but there was really nothing he could do about it. He had tried to comfort her once before when she was still a child, but to no avail. She just lay in his arms and cried for hours. The older she got, the moodier she became on this fateful day.

So, Sesshoumaru decided it best to just leave her to her own devices. Little did he realize, this was quite the opposite of what Rin really wanted or needed. She didn't wish to be left alone on this day. She WANTED the comfort. Even though she cried, it was just her way to cope with the impending sorrow.

That year had seemed to be the worse of all the other years that had passed. He was worried about her. After she had finished her dinner, she simply stood and left the dining area with out a word to anyone. He listened as she ascended the stair case and proceeded to her quarters. He immediately followed after he heard her door shut. He waited outside her room, torn with indecision. Her sobs, sobs that she was trying so hard to keep quiet were easily heard by the inu demon lord. Should he go inside and try to comfort her, or should he just leave her alone? His decision made, he knocked slightly on her door.

"LEAVE ME ALONE!" she cried.

Sesshoumaru just stared at the door in disbelief. She had never spoken to him in such a manner, but he wasn't filled with anger as he usually would have been if it would have been any other person. Instead, he was filled with a kind of sympathy for the girl. He knocked again.

"I TOLD YOU TO LEAVE ME ALONE, JAKEN! Please!" The last word was but a whisper as her sobs grew louder.

'She thinks it’s Jaken?’ he pondered.

"Rin."

He heard her gasp as she realized what it was she had just said; not knowing it was her Lord that knocked on her door and not the imp. He heard her footsteps as she walked across the room to the door. She flung it open and immediately apologized.

"I'm so sorry my Lord! I could have sworn it was Jaken. Please, forgive me?"

Sesshoumaru was taken back at her appearance. He face was a swollen mess. Her eyes we were blood-red and brimming with unshed tears. Her hair was tossed every which way and her robs were disheveled. 'How could she have become such a mess, in such a short time?’ he silently wondered.

"I'm sorry to have disturbed you Rin. I'm retiring early tonight, and I just wanted to let you know....” his mind drifted off as he couldn't believe he was about to say this, but he figured it was best for her sake.

"Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama?"

"I just wanted to let you know that if you need me, I am at your disposal."

Her face was marred with confusion. Had her Lord really said what she thought he just said?

"Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama. Thank you for your offer."

She knew that he was aware of the reason for her tears, but he hadn't tried to comfort her in years. Needless to say, she was in shock. Of course, she wouldn't take him up on his offer. He had only extended it to ease her mind, and it did help. Little did she know she was mistaken.

Hours had passed and Sesshoumaru lay in his bed, listening to the muffled cries in the other room. It was hard for him to admit, but it was breaking his heart, for he knew well what it was like to lose one's family. He had left his door unlocked for the first time in what seemed like ages, and he was beginning to wonder if that was such a good idea.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, she quieted down and fell to sleep. It had started to rain outside about an hour ago and it was starting to pick up. Lightening crashed in the midnight sky and thunderclaps could be heard from somewhere far off, but they seemed to be getting closer by the minute. The demon lord lay in his bed, thinking about the times when Rin was a child and how simple things had been then. She was always happy and was satisfied to just be by his side. As she grew, things began to change. Such as her appearance, her scent, her views on life and the world around her, her personality began to emerge and shape, but one thing remained the same. She was happy when she was by his side. Even now, he knew that. She belonged to him, and she always would. A smile dawned on his perfect, usually expressionless mask, and he slowly drifted off into a dreamless sleep.

He awoke to a dangerously loud thunder clap and a bolt of lightening that followed. He sat up in bed, sensing something was not right. He strained his ears and listened though the unusually loud rain pouring outside. After about a second, the castle was filled with a blood curdling scream.

'Rin?' His mind raced. 'What's happening to her?'

He was about to get up when he heard her footsteps on the hardwood floor. He then heard her door fling open and hit the wall in the hallway with a loud bang. He then listened as her footsteps headed fast in the direction of his quarters. Without even a knock, she threw his door open. She stood in his doorway, looking him square in the eyes.

Her face was one of absolute horror.

"Rin, is everything alright? Why did you scream?"

"Oh, Sesshoumaru-sama! It was awful! They were killed right in front of my eyes! My mother, father, and big brother! There was nothing I could do to save them, nothing I could do to protect them! How did I get away? Why was I allowed to survive? I don't remember and I don't understand!" She began to sob uncontrollably. Her whole body shook from her sorrow.

He didn't know what to say, what to do to ease her fears. She had obviously had a nightmare, but to her it was deadly real. Before he realized what was happening and before he could stop it, she had thrown herself on his bed and wrapped her arms around his waist. She buried her face in the crook of his neck and let her tears flow freely once again. What was he to do? He had offered his comforts if she needed them tonight. So, he slowly lifted his arms (Yes two...lol) and wrapped them around her slender form. He then proceeded to rub small circles on the small of her back while whispering, "Shh, everything is going to be alright. It was just a bad dream. You are alright, and I intend to keep it that way. Nothing will ever harm you again."

He silently sighed with relief when he felt her tense muscles relax so freely in his arms.

"Sesshoumaru-sama, I can't be alone tonight. I just don't think I could bear it. May I please stay here with you? I promise, I won't be a bother and I will never ask it of you again. Please, just let me stay here with you for the night."

She began to slowly tangle her hands in his long sliver hair, twirling it around her fingers. His mind clouded over, he was unable to think straight. Her scent was only thing he could smell, and the feel of her fingers in his hair was sending shivers down his spine. He didn't answer her. He simply lay down with her in his arms. That was all the approval she needed. She closed her eyes and the dream began to fade from her memory. She had never felt so safe and secure.

**"Shh, everything is going to be alright. It was just a bad dream. You are alright, and I intend to keep it that way. Nothing will ever harm you again."**

The words rolled around in her mind and his. Had he really said those things? More importantly, did he mean them? Those were questions he didn't wish to address at the current time. For now, he just wanted to be in the moment, holding a beautiful woman in his arms. Again, his mind wondered back to when she was a child and back to the times when she used to sleep with him on a regular basis. But, this was different. She was no longer the awkward little child whose body would squirm and kick against his when she was dreaming. Oh no, this was not the same at all.

Sesshoumaru shook his head, ridding himself of the memory that so freely seeped into his mind. He didn't know if Rin remembered that night, as he removed her from his bed that morning and placed her in her own before she awoke. They never spoke of it and he never dared to ask her about it. He glanced out the window, noting the beautiful array of stars that littered the night sky. It was late. They usually never ate dinner this late, but everyone had awaited his arrival. He sighed as he moved the large and well cushioned chair back from his desk. No doubt Rin would look breathtaking in the new garments that he had bestowed upon her, and he couldn't wait a minute longer to see her.
