Going Home
Chapter Four –Going Home
Kagome landed rather ungracefully at the bottom of the well, not having the balance her of her two companions. Inuyasha growled something under his breath but caught her around the shoulders and sprang out of the well holding her. He frowned. Her weight was practically nothing. It was almost scary how little she weighed. She was still trembling and though the scent of her fear had decreased, it was by no means gone.
Inuyasha wondered what could have happened to make her fear spike that way. Was that the person who had been harming her? Well, that answer was quite obvious, actually, but could hitting someone cause such a severe reaction of fear? He had seen a lot of people hit around in his years, and had never seen one react as much as what Kagome had. Perhaps it was a combination of the uncle’s presence along with knowing she was leaving. Yes, that would be it.
It made no sense him though. Why would she be groveling in that manner? Hadn’t Sesshoumaru said that this girl’s father was a youkai? That meant that she was a human; she should have been stronger than him. He hadn’t asked how that man was related to her; it could have been through her father though, and if that was the case, he was also youkai. Why then had he not sensed it? Now that he stopped to think about it, he had sensed no youkai. Not even on the girl had he sensed youkai blood. She was a hanyou though, so how could this be?
Sesshoumaru nodded to him and took his leave, flying over top of them to reach the castle first. He would have a room ready for her arrival long before they arrived, even if Inuyasha used his demon speed.
It was growing late, and Inuyasha knew the girl must have been getting hungry. She hadn’t eaten much at her home. He sighed at the inconvenience she was causing already and sat her feet down on the ground. He gathered together some firewood and set about finding food while he left her to start the fire.
When he returned he found her asleep next to the fire, the warmth of its flame throwing her face into sharp relief. Her make up had worn off, but he hadn’t noticed before because he hadn’t been looking. Now though he scowled as he dropped the rabbits next to the fire and knelt over her, examining her face and neck. Her clothing covered the rest of her body, and he didn’t necessarily want to touch her anymore than he absolutely had to.
He placed the meat on a sharpened stick and sat it to roast over the fire while he watched this girl. How on earth was he going to explain this to Kikyo? Sure, he hadn’t made her his mate yet, but he had been planning to eventually. He growled in disgust. Kikyo might have been human, but at least she was a powerful miko! Now, here he was stuck with this pathetic, supposed hanyou.
Anger at his father surged through him once more. How could he have done this to him? Why had he never felt it important enough to mention?
Kagome whimpered slightly and stirred, opening her eyes. She sat up stiffly, her breath catching as pain went through her. She was too used to it to groan or cry out though. She looked across the fire at Inuyasha. “I’m sorry I fell asleep, Inuyasha-sama.”
He stared at her blankly for several seconds. “Don’t call me that. My brother is Sesshoumaru-sama. I am not. I have no wish to be called such.” His voice was cold to her, making her shiver. It reminded her too much of her uncle’s voice. She had the distinct impression that this hanyou didn’t like her very much.
She looked down at the ground and every once in a while would glance up, watching as his ears twitched and swiveled at different sounds. The rabbits finished roasting and he shoved one into her hands. She only nibbled at it, and by the time Inuyasha had finished his, she still had well over half of her rabbit left.
Inuyasha growled at her in annoyance. “Stupid wench! Don’t you even know how to eat without taking all night!” She flinched at his tone but didn’t respond. She continued to take very tiny bites of the meat. He jumped to his feet, his ears nearly flattened to his head in vexation. He ripped a piece of meat from her rabbit and stuffed it into her mouth. Then he placed his hands on both her jaws and worked them up and down as though showing her how a person was supposed to eat.
He had not expected to this to cause the girl to cry out in pain and jerk away, but it had. She crawled several feet away from him and curled up, her arms protectively over her head and face. He moved slowly closer to her, not thinking about his actions as he knelt down. Gently, Inuyasha pried her arms away from her head and placed her hands in her lap. He lifted his hands back to her face but this time traced his fingers very carefully over her jaws. He felt ill. Both of her jaws had been broken. The left was almost healed, the right though felt rather new.
Inuyasha sat back on his haunches, looking at the girl on the ground in front of him. “Take off your clothes.”
Kagome’s face went from being ashen to the color of a sunset. “What?”
He growled again. “I said take off your clothes, wench!”
Kagome stood, turned her back to him, and removed her clothes wordlessly. She didn’t feel like fighting with this guy. Even if he were a human she knew she was no match for him. Her body was too weak. She let all of her clothing fall to the ground.
Inuyasha’s eyes close momentarily before he reopens them. Her entire body in one way or another has been abused. He can tell this just by staring at her back. The small of her back is black, a shoeprint impressed upon her pale skin. Handprints cover her rear, and the backs of her legs are smattered with bruises as though she had been repeatedly pinched. “Face me,” his voice is harsh from shock. Slowly she turned, keeping her head down to hide the tears she could feel burning her eyes. At the sharp intake of breath she remembered how badly she was bruised in certain areas, and couldn’t suppress the shudder that ran through her body.
Inuyasha suddenly found it difficult to breath. The steady beating of his heart hurt as he looked at this girl standing in front of him. So much pain. How could someone have wanted to hurt her so badly? He knew that her clothes had to hurt. The jeans she wore were tight, and would rub right against the various bruises. Standing up, he removed his outer kimono and handed it to her.
“Put it on.” She stared at him for a minute before doing as he ordered. She almost breathed a sigh of relief. It was warm and fit loosely against her skin. It didn’t hurt. She sank back to the ground.
“Thank you, Inuyasha.” Her voice cracked slightly.
“I don’t know what you’re thanking me for.” He bit out in terse reply, then leapt away, landing in the treetops. Not long after that Kagome fell asleep.
