Chapter 39: Strange conversations

Title: Strange conversations

Prompt and Word Count: Devotion-452

Characters: Bankotsu and Jakotsu

Prompt Summary: Jakotsu misunderstands Bankotsu's meaning.

"What in the world are you talking about, Jakotsu? Do you not remember the conversation we had in our room?" Bankotsu inquired and for a long time, Jakotsu just sat there staring at him without saying a word and Bankotsu began to think that maybe he really had forgotten the conversation in all that he had gone through that day.

"I told you that I wanted you to stay with me. I didn't mean just until the next town," Bankotsu began only to be startled into silence a moment later when he realized Jakotsu was leaning in dangerously close; as though he was about to kiss him. Mere inches from their lips touching, Bankotsu realized that was exactly what he was about to do.

Startled and thoroughly confused on how the conversation led to such a move, he let his body act on its own and found himself pushing Jakotsu away from him; causing him to fall backwards. Hiding his pain behind his anger, Jakotsu demanded, "What the hell do you want from me?! You say that I don't need to prostitute myself anymore and that you want me here, but you obviously don't want me."

"Today must have effected you a lot more than I realized. We talked about this not that long ago. I wanted you to come with me for back up and company. What I am going to be doing is going to be dangerous and I need someone to watch my back that I can trust. A friend to spend the long nights of the journey to that doesn't have loyalty or devotion to someone else that might end up asking him to betray me for.

"You don't need to prostitute yourself anymore because I have another job for you. You would be my wing man and occasionally in my search I come across some money; half of it would go to you."

Though he was still a bit confused and shaken up by the days events, something Bankotsu had said was apparently starting to get through to Jakotsu as he features softened and his eyes began to show their understanding. Deciding it was up to him to remove the awkwardness that seemed to have settle over them, Jakotsu smiled softly before pointing out something important.

"As fun as that sounds, I can not wait to get out of these seriously uncomfortable clothes and a man traveling around on horseback with a saloon girl, practicing or not, it going to draw a lot more attention than you should have if you want to go unnoticed."

"I know that. That's why I got you a little something," Bankotsu explained before tossing Jakotsu a package from his saddle bag.
