A New Life For Two

Chapter Thirty-Seven


Mrs. Higurashi sat in the waiting area along with Souta and Grandpa. The ambulance had managed to get a name out of Kagome as they got her in. They immediately had her family notified that they were on the way to the hospital. The family had beat the ambulance there being that it was only a few minutes from the shrine but twenty from the scene of the accident. While they were waiting for them to arrive Souta called Kurama from a payphone.

The fox picked up on the first ring. "Hello."

"Kurama this is Souta."

"Hey have you seen Kagome or Sango? Me and Yusuke are out looking for them."

"Umm, yeah we are at the hospital. We got a call saying that both girls were in an accident, we don't know how bad it is yet." Souta informed him. When he heard nothing he spoke again. "Kurama?"

"Umm, I'm here. Did they say how they were?"

"No, all we know is that they got hit by a car. Wait I think thats the ambulance now." He pulled the phone away from his ear and placed it down to go have a look. The double doors opened and two stretcher's were brought in. Souta felt his heart sink at his mother's yell. Mrs. Higurashi was trying to get to them while Grandpa held her back. The boy felt his heart break at seeing his sister. She was covered in blood, mostly on her face. Sango didn't look any better.

"We got to get them both into the O.R., we got major head trauma and call the prenatal department, this one is in premature labor." Souta forgot about the phone as he ran over. The small machine Kagome was hooked up to started making a loud noise and his mother began to get hysterical.

The doctor started shouting as the double doors to the section leading to the O.R.. opened. "She's flat-lining," the doors closed behind them.

Souta walked up to his grandpa who was holding his mother down. "Grandpa?" The old man looked at him with tears in his eyes. "No, she can't be."

"Don't worry Souta they will save her." He tried to comfort the boy with words. But he'd seen the shape the girl had been in. It looked like they were going to lose all three tonight.


Kurama dropped the phone. Yusuke had only heard him speak once but the look on his friend's face didn't look good. The red head took a long breath, "They've been taken to the hospital. Souta said they'd been hit by a car, he didn't know how they were."

"What aren't you telling me?"

"They were brought in while I was on the phone Yusuke. I caught bits and pieces. Sango is in labor and someone flatlined."


Mrs. Higurashi was crying in her hands when the two walked in the waiting room. She didn't look up, just continued to cry. It had been only fifteen minutes since they'd been taken back. Grandpa had left her to speak to the young boy. At hearing the doctor he started breaking down a few minutes later. He knew what it meant when they said someone was flatlining. It meant his sister's heart had stopped, that she was dying if not dead.

Souta saw both men run up to them. They looked at Grandpa for the details. The old man tried to remain calm, it wouldn't be good for everyone to be an emotional wreck. "Both of them are in surgery. Sango is also in labor, we haven't heard anything yet. Both girls are strong I'm sure they will pull through."

"Then why did Kagome flatline Gramps?" Souta asked. He didn't want to be lied to. He'd seen them, he might be a child but he wasn't stupid.

Kurama felt his heart stop. It had been Kagome! He sat down feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders. Tears filled his eyes at the thought of losing her. He heard Yusuke sit next to him and looked over at him. He was shedding his tears without care. Kurama felt the lump grow in his throat and the tears well up. Before he could stop them they began to fall. 'I love her and I never got to tell her.'

Everyone was sitting waiting, no one would leave. It had been over five hours since they were brought in. They looked up when a man in white came out. The doctor walked up to Mrs. Higurashi, "Are you the mother?"

"Yes, how are they?"

"You're daughter is in the I.C.U. recovering, she had a serious head wound. It doesn't look like it's going to leave any permanent damage. She also had a few broken ribs. But she should pull through as long there isn't any unseen complications."

"And Sango?" This came from Yusuke.

"Yes, the other young lady. I'm afraid the news isn't as good. She didn't suffer any major injuries the problem is with her pregnancy. The impact caused her to go into labor early. They have her in the prenatal ward trying to stop the contractions. The good news is her membrane is still intact and so is the bag. If we can get the contractions to stop we might be able to save the pregnancy. If we can't there is a slight chance the child may survive being as early as it is. But both should pull through. They are very lucky, the impact should have killed them both instantly."
