~*~Chapter 37 Visions~*~

~*~Hi, guys. I'm back once again. Sorry to have kept you waiting, but I was sick again somewhere last first week of March, and I got hospitalized for about a week too. :-( After that, my muse left me again and I've been having writer's block. It was really bad timing 'coz I was also wanting to finish this one sooner *sniffles*. So that's the reason why I haven't been updating. I know I've put you guys through my absence a lot of times before, and I am ever so grateful that you all have been very supportive and understanding of my plight. I'm asking for that same support and understanding (plus your patience), now. ^_^ I hope I'll be forgiven!!!

To catt: Wow, you reviewed two chappies in a row! And I love you for that! *hug* Sorry for the last chappy, and I can't really assure you as of now, but please do remember what I said last time. TRUST ME, okay? *winks* Glad to see you again! Love ya lots!!!

To rikku: Shall I call for a psychiatrist now? ^_^ Kidding! Anyway, thanx for the review! *hug* Just 2 more chappies left so hang on to your seat, okay? ;) Love ya lots!!!

To One who bring about a terrible vengence: Okay, MegaBorX. You've outdone yourself this time. ^_^ You're welcome to write an AU if you are so inclined, but please don't use my writing. You know what I plan to do with this story from the very beginning, so don't say I didn't warn you. And please stop the threats. You must know by now it won't work on me. ^_^ I value you as my reviewer, but as I always say, THIS IS MY STORY. It'll end the way I intend it to, or not at all. (Am I sounding like Tidus here!?) So please be patient and wait out the ending before you do anything rash okay? ^_^ Thanx for being here! *hug* Love ya lots!!!

To ramona grimalkit: OMG, YOU'RE BACK!!! *hug and more hugs* You don't know how much I missed your reviews. ^_^ And wait... I'm a fiend and a beast now!? lolz. But the latter--the evil one--I could probably live with. ^_^ Wow, you're back with the praises. I soooo love you for that. hehehe. I'm so sorry for the hiatus, but here's the update you asked for. Hope you'll get to read and review this one soon. Oh and if you've got the time, could you read my other fic 'Firebrand' for me? And please tell me what you think about it okay? ^_^ See you again! Love ya lots!!!

To SilverFox: Yes, she can too. ^_^ Loved your reaction, by the way. hehehe. Thanx for reviewing! *hug* Love ya lots!!!

To Zandy: Thanx so much for trusting me!!! *hug* I guess that makes you one of the very few who does. ^_^ Sorry for the lateness of this update, by the way. Hope you'll forgive me. And thanx again for making me blush with the compliments! ^_^ Love ya lots!!!

To claudine: Pretty name for a pretty reviewer! Thanx so much! *hug* Sorry for making you cry and for being so tardy 'bout this chappy, but I hope I'll see you again here okay? And it's my pleasure writing this one for all of you to read. ^_^ Love ya lots!!!

To Kari: New reviewer!!! *hug* Thanx so much. And it doesn't end here, 2 more chappies coming out! ^_^ Stick with me okay? ;) Love ya lots!!!

AND TO YOU READING THIS: Well, what more can I say? Totally rocking reviews, and a long list of readers. You're everything any writer could ask for. ^_^ Hope you guys are still with me even after all this okay? Enjoy reading and LOVE YA LOTS!!! mwaah!~*~

~*~Chapter 37— Visions~*~

It was like a scene from some dramatic movie ending. Their backdrop was that of the glorious sunrise, it’s beauty and radiance shining and shedding light to everything and everywhere it touched.

The hero stood at the highest branch of an enormous ancient tree, facing the spreading rays of the sun. His silver hair swayed in time with the tree’s green leaves, motionless but for the wind rustling his clothes and hair, his gaze transfixed towards the light.

The heroine lay on her hero’s arms, serene and fragile looking. A coat of vibrant red covered her, a startling contrast to her pallor. Her eyes were closed in repose. Just like Snow White, what with her raven black hair, blood red lips and skin as white as snow.

Only her Prince Charming could not wake her up… no matter how many kisses he may bestow upon her lips.

“Kagome…”

Inuyasha’s eyes were blood red, but not because of his youkai blood trying to claim his body. For the first time in the hanyou’s life, he poured out his heart and soul into weeping. His keening roar echoed throughout his forest, the sound carrying through every living being within it.

Below them, Inuyasha’s cry made the hairs on everyone’s body stand on end. Especially for the taijiya and the houshi. They only heard that kind of sound once… in another forest, another time.

It was heartbreaking, and chilling at once. It told them what they needed to know.

Sango clutched at Miroku’s robes as she bit her lip to keep herself from crying out at the same time. The monk drew his lady closer, needing comfort in return and closed his eyes from the grief that threatened to consume them all. Sesshomaru just bowed his head and confirmed their deepest fear.

“The miko… she is dead,”

==================================

The miko bowed her head in prayer, watching as the life she took finally gave out.

She felt no guilt or remorse whatsoever. The other girl’s death—her reincarnation—was the means to an end she was certain and determined would go her way.

Yet now, she could not believe it.

Because instead of rushing back to her and accepting her invitation of Hell, Inuyasha clung to the girl still, hoping against hope that she would still live.

He let the world know of her death—and his grief—with his howling at the wind.

‘He never ever cried. Not in front of everyone, not in front of me. Not even when I died…’

And therein lay the source of her anger… and her anguish.

Brown eyes narrowed into slits with a chill foreboding.

‘Foolishness. I will not allow her to live, Inuyasha. You must know that by now. Neither will I allow you to desert me. You are mine… for always,’

Kikyou vowed to herself as she slipped another arrow into her bow…

==================================

And then there was silence.

Even the wind seemed to dissipate around the forest, making the place hushed and eerie.

The God Tree shook for a moment, then stilled. Its’ limbs fell to reveal the lovers.

Sesshomaru immediately rushed to his brother’s side. One look at the hanyou told him whatever he needed to know.

“You have the jewel,”

A nod was his only answer.

“Do you wish upon it now?”

Silence.

Inuyasha walked a little ways from Goshinboku, sat down on the grass and laid his mate’s lifeless body on his lap.

Sango broke from Miroku’s embrace to kneel down beside her best friend, and took her cold hand in hers. She held it and stroked it over and over, as if that in itself would make Kagome breathe again.

Sesshomaru didn’t like being ignored. He went over to them and tried again.

“Will you wish on the Shikon no Tama now, Inuyasha?”

Inuyasha blankly stared at the scenery. The voice he was hearing seemed to come from somewhere far away from him. It was like his mind was separate from his body. Like he had no substance anymore.

He could not bring himself to answer his brother. Not when the only wish and the only dream he ever really meant of wanting and having lay dead in his arms.

Inuyasha clutched Kagome’s body closer to him, wondering if her spirit was still there with him. He was aware of their friends closing in on him. Of Sango’s weeping and Miroku’s silent tears. His brother—cold-hearted bastard that he was—did not shed a single tear for the girl he admired. But a certain sadness lingered in his aura.

Kouga and his pack… no one knew what happened to them. Only that Kagura took them with her when she left before Kagome died.

‘Before she died…’

And Inuyasha… curiously, his eyes were now dry. Bereft of any signs of his lament, only a trace of redness within its’ depths.

Amber met amber as he met his brother’s eyes.

“I won’t wish on it,”

Miroku and Sango were shocked to say the least. Sesshomaru never gave an indication of what he thought of Inuyasha’s declaration. He stood there, silent and waiting.

“But why? I thought it was what we agreed upon. It’s the only way to completely purify the jewel and rid the world of its’ existence,”

“Yes. Kagome-chan gave the Shikon no Tama to you, Inuyasha. She trusted you with it, even sacrificed her life to give you that wish. Will you not use her gift to you?”

Inuyasha closed his eyes at the torment Sango’s words gave him. He hugged Kagome even more, trying to feel her warmth. But she felt so cold.

He knew she would never be warm again…

“Inuyasha?”

His eyes opened, still reflecting the pain he was feeling.

“Don’t you think I don’t know that? Because of this cursed jewel and the stupid wish that I wanted, Kagome died! And now… now the only thing that I want to wish for at this very moment… even that is forbidden to me,”

“What do you mean?”

“She—Kagome… she made me promise—”

Inuyasha swallowed. He could not tell them. Just thinking of the promise he made mortified him.

“Inuyasha?”

Miroku took pity on him.

“I think what Inuyasha is trying to tell us is that Kagome-sama made him promise not to wish on the jewel. Is that it, Inuyasha?”

“Nani!?”

Inuyasha shook his head. Sesshomaru was close to losing his patience.

“Then what, pray tell, is stalling you, hanyou? You’re wasting precious time,”

The ‘hanyou’ did it. The fire was back in Inuyasha’s eyes. Eyes that met Sesshomaru’s in challenge.

The demon lord nodded in satisfaction.

“No. Kagome does—did want me to wish on the Shikon no Tama. She trusted me with it, trusted in me that I would make something good out of my wish. But she forbade me the one wish that I would choose above all,”

Both humans were quiet for a moment, pondering his words.

“Do you still want to become a full-youkai, Inuyasha?”

“Then that’s why. Inuyasha, you know full well why—“

Sesshomaru held up his hand in command.

“Silence. Let the hanyou finish,”

“Fuck you, Fluffy. You’re really starting to piss me off. Call me a half-breed one more time and I’ll shove Tetsusaiga up your damn a—“

The Lord of the Western Lands surprised him with a smile.

“Try, and maybe then I won’t give you what you wish for either,”

Inuyasha was stunned into silence by that comment.

‘What I… dammit, yes! Tenseiga,’

He forgot about his father’s life-giving fang. He turned now hopeful eyes to his older brother.

Sesshomaru shook his head no… not yet.

“Tell me about the promise she made you do,”

“She said… she told me not to wish for her life,”

“What!?”

“For Kami’s sake, why?”

“And you agreed?”

“She said… she wanted—“

“What did she want?”

“To come with me… when I fulfill my own promises to Kikyou,”

At his words, just one word popped into all of their heads.

Hell…

“And was that her last bequest? No more?”

“Damn you, Sesshomaru! She was dying—“

“I ask you again: is your wishing on the Shikon no Tama the only promise you made on her deathbed?”

Inuyasha was silent for a moment. He was debating whether or not he should tell them of what Kagome’s true wishes were.

But here was the chance of making her live again… without breaking his own promise to her.

Even if she might not ever forgive him for it.

‘Forgive me, Kanai,’

Inuyasha took a deep breath and nodded.

“Hai,”

Sesshomaru conceded. He gestured for his brother to lay Kagome’s body on the grass. But Inuyasha did not comply.

He wanted his self to be the first thing she sees when she opens her eyes.

“I’ll hold her,”

“Don’t be foolish, Inuyasha. It would only be a moment, nothing more,”

The hanyou growled.

“I don’t care! I’m holding her, and that’s that. You can cut through me,”

“Stubborn hanyou,”

The youkai lord muttered under his breath.

“Oi! I heard that, baka!”

“Quiet! How can I give you back your mate if you continue to distract me?”

Inuyasha fell silent at that.

Sesshomaru’s hand moved over Tenseiga and closed his eyes. He felt the sword’s strong pulse and the power behind it. Opening his eyes, he saw the imps starting to chain Kagome’s body.

Narrowing his eyes, he drew Tenseiga from its’ sheath and poised to strike…

==================================

~*~Inuyasha’s POV~*~

I saw Fluffy getting ready. I don’t really know what it was he was seeing, but I could care less. I fixed my eyes on Kagome’s beautiful face, waited for her eyes to open and braced myself for the pain.

Tenseiga could never kill, but it would still hurt as hell being cut by it.

Only the blow never came.

Confounded on why Fluffy hesitated, my eyes left Kagome’s face to look at him. I was also getting ready to roar him down when what I saw shut me up.

Fluffy was holding Tensiga, and was ready to strike in a downward arc. But something held him back.

Looking deeper, I saw someone behind him. A hand was closed over Fluffy’s right arm, possibly preventing him from striking.

But the most amazing and unbelievable thing was that when she stepped into view, I could swear the one I saw was my mate standing there…
