~*~Chapter 36 - I Love You, Goodbye...~*~

~*~Okay... I've finally updated. But something tells me not everyone's going to be happy with this. *puts up barricades, just in case ^_^* But again, I MUST insist that all of you trust me, okay? I've been working towards the end of this story, and I guess this leaves 2-3 mpre chapters until it's over. I hope it's still been worth your while, and I'm glad you're still with me! *hugs to everyone* And by the way, I got 6 reviews for the last one!!! *jumps in glee*

Now on to the thanx!!! ^_^

To catt: You're the first one who reviewed the last chappy... thanx a lot!!! *hug* And I have to say, if the last one made you cry, this chappy will make you bawl. ^_^ Read on okay? And you totally rock too! ;) Love ya lots!!!

To jodibetz: New reviewer!!! *hug* Thanx for reviewing, and for finding the last chappy good enough. I only hope this one meets more of your expectations. ^_^ Drop by again, okay? Love ya lots!!!

To Zandy: Aww, there, there everything's going to be fine... eeep!!! Umm... I think? ^_^ Please don't kill me after you read this chappy, ONEGAI SHIMASU!!! Just trust me with this story okay? And hint, hint: if I do something to dash your hopes up in the near future, I'll give you a rope to hang onto okay? ;) Thanx for the review and hope to see you again here! Love ya lots!!!

To morlana: Okay... yours is a very special review. Not odd, but I find it exhilerating. ^_^ I assume that you watch the series (since you're reading a fic about it) and I have to ask you: have you ever seen--in any part of the series, esp. when Sesshy is concerned--anyone TRY and throw an ofuda back at him? And even more so, did the ofuda work against him? For the longest time since I have been watching the anime, I have never seen Miroku--or anyone else for that matter--try and land an ofuda on the demon lord. I simply deducted that somehow, with how much powerful Sesshomaru is, it won't actually work. It might sting him or burn him even, but other than that, I doubt it would do much damage. Remember the episode where he tried to touch Tetsusaiga? I think it's kinda like that. Does no real harm to him, but irritates the hell out of Sesshy. ^_^ So yes, I do think that he could touch it over and over--esp. since in this story, it was only a matter of seconds--and live thru it. I do hope that answers your question, and drop by again if you have more, okay? Thanx for reading and reviewing!!! Love ya lots!!!

To psyco_chick32: I'm sorry for making you cry... but I'm so glad you reviewed!!! *hug* Anyway, if you read this chappy, please don't go ahead and start hating me? PLEASE??? *puppy eyes blinking* Anyway, thanx again and hope you stay 'till the end. Love ya lots!!!

To MegaBorX: Hey, you're back!!! WEEBEE!!! *hug* Sorry for the cliffy, but it has to be really done. Another cliffy's coming up, but I doubt you'll like it. And I also beg you, in the name of your 108 Kamis or more, to not hate me after this okay? ^_^ Glad to have you back, and hope to hear from you again. Love ya lots!!!

AND TO YOU READING THIS: This story has gone further than what I expected (what with the readers reaching about 7-8000 now--if only it didn't reset *huhuhu*--and the reviews coming up to 288 now, not to mention the IYFANGUILD nomination) and it makes me feel good that I at least have this as an achievement as a writer. Even if I do sometimes--okay, always ^_^--get my tenses confused, you guys are still here and reading my story. Now we come to the close end that we all have been waiting for. As I said, just 2-3 chappies left of this story. It will be hard ending this one, since I've loved doing it and have come to enjoy your many responses to this story, but all stories have to end. And I do hope once again, that you will still be there with me for the last parts. THANX so much for reading, and I do hope that you leave me with some words that I will remember--and cherish, may it be good or bad--for the rest of my writer's days. Okay, that's just a long way of saying PLEASE LEAVE ME A REVIEW!!! ^_^ I am not above begging now, I'd really like to hear your views about this fic. THANX AGAIN FOR READING, AND HAPPY READING FOR THIS CHAPPY!!! LOVE YA LOTS!!! mwaah!~*~

~*~Chapter 36— I Love You, Goodbye…~*~

“I LOVE YOU… KA—GO—ME…”

The words were out of his mouth before he could stop them. And he realized he had no regrets over it.

He should’ve told her, a million times before now. If he could have his way, he would tell her he loved her each and every day of his life.

Only she wouldn’t be there anymore.

“Kagome,”

She was currently busy wetting the front of his haori thoroughly. He stroked her hair to calm her.

Kagome finally stopped her crying, her sobs turning into hiccups. She raised her head and looked at her mate, a smile alight on her face.

“I longed for that, you know? And now you—I—“

It was as if no words could express her meaning. So Inuyasha dropped his lips to hers once more and repeated his vow.

“I want to hear you tell me you love me too, Kanai,”

He whispered to his mate, his forehead against hers.

“I love you too, Inuyasha,”

Her words were his sanity, his benediction. She was the only reason he kept on going and going.

It was all for her. But she would be gone, vanished into eternity.

He would be alone once again.

Where would that leave him?

“Inuyasha, I want you to have this,”

He was shook out of his reverie by her voice, and he felt something cold being pressed into his palm.

“The Shikon no Tama!”

He breathed.

“It’s what’s keeping me alive ‘till now, Inuyasha. But I can’t hold it forever,”

The jewel of his dreams, right there within his grasp. He had wanted it for so long, and risked everything just to obtain it.

Yet now…

He looked at the woman in his arms, the miko who willingly gave him the forbidden jewel.

The love of his life… for all time.

And wished that he could keep her instead…

He thrust the jewel back into her hand, and closed her fingers around it almost desperately.

“I don’t need it anymore! Can’t you see? YOU’RE what I need—what all I would ever need. And you can just fucking hold it ‘till your hands fall out ‘coz you’re not dying on me!”

“Inuyasha—“

“No! I’m not taking that if it means my life. You ARE my life, Kagome. Without you, I would be lost. Worthless,”

Kagome’s hand shot out and gripped Inuyasha’s chin firmly.

“Don’t say that about you, do you hear me? Ever. You are wonderful, Inuyasha. And you don’t even need me to be here just to tell you that,”

“Kagome—“

“No. It was meant to be like this, Inuyasha. I guess… I was never really meant to be here. Now, in this time and place, with you,”

‘That can’t be true! She belongs here, with me…’

A sad smile formed on Kagome’s lips, but she bravely fought back her tears this time.

“But I don’t regret it. I will never regret being here, with you. Not even if it had to end like this. You have taught me so much, shown me so much. I never would’ve been truly happy if I had stayed on my other side of the well, I know that now,”

“And maybe… maybe it’s better this way, you know?”

First he was shocked speechless. Then he got angry.

“Better? How can you say that to me, huh Kagome!? You’re going to die, goddammit!!! And I have to see you die right here in front of me, in my arms. Do you know how that feels? What in hell did ever possess you to go after the damn arrow anyway? You KNEW it wouldn’t really hurt me. You knew—“

She laid a finger on Inuyasha’s lips to stop his tirade. She knew that he was angry, and he had the right to be. She put her life at risk… and their pup’s too.

Thinking about their child broke her heart in a thousand pieces once more.

“I could never let her do that to you again! Can’t you see? You’ve been over that episode for so many times now, Inuyasha. And each time an arrow pierces your heart, you lose a little of yourself,”

“So you chose to make me lose my everything, is that it?”

Inuyasha accused her, his voice laced with so much hurt.

“Hontou ni, gomen nasai, Inuyasha-kun. But I could never—would never—take the risk that Kikyou would take you away from me that way. I could never let you go through that again,”

“So forgive me, if I did not think before I went for that arrow. But believe me when I tell you that I never intended to cause you pain of any sort. I only—“

Her words faded. Her eyes, averted to his as she began her speech now rose to meet his gaze.

Eyes the color of the midnight sky met that of a lion’s.

“I make no excuses for what I did. What I did, I did out of love—for you. And I will never regret the choices I made, no matter how wrong you might think it is,”

Inuyasha closed his eyes at that. He has no choice…

“I want you to wish on the Shikon no Tama. I trust you with everything that’s in me, Inuyasha. I know that you would make the right decisions this time. And for the last time, you are perfectly wonderful the way you are now. Look around you and know that you are accepted—more importantly loved because you’re you,”

Inuyasha stared at the jewel she laid on his hand once again, and found the answer to his dilemma.

“I know what I would wish for,”

Kagome saw the look in Inuyasha’s eyes and knew that he was thinking of wishing her to be alive.

She was tempted, really she was. But then…

“I don’t want you to wish for me to stay alive. Promise me, Inuyasha. Wish for anything but that, onegai,”

“Nani o!? Damn it all, why Kagome? Don’t you want to stay with me? Don’t you want to live? Chikuso, but I can’t understand you, woman!”

The tears she held back rushed to the surface and came down in torrents.

“I do want to live! But I want life with you. And we both know that that can’t be. Sooner or later, Kikyou will come and demand you fulfill your promises to her, and you’ll leave me. You’ll die too!”

Inuyasha ached for his mate. What she said was true… didn’t Kikyou planned on taking him now?

“Kagome—“

“No more, Inuyasha. I’m tired of knowing that you’ll still be with her in the end. At least this way…”

Kagome caressed his cheek once more and gazed at him as though committing his features to memory.

“At least this way, I can go with you,”

He was, to say the least, astounded. The lengths that she would go to just to stay beside him…

“No! Do you hear me, Kagome? No. Not now, not ever. Not on where I’m going!”

Kagome lifted her chin defiantly.

“You have no choice but to take me, Inuyasha. I will never come back to my body willingly once I’m gone. Even if you do wish it on the jewel, I will find the strength to stay dead and wait for you to take me,”

He knew the set of her chin, the stubbornness in her eyes. He might as well be up to a brick wall.

“Even when I’m this close to losing you, you’d still fight me with this, wouldn’t you?”

He allowed a small smile to grace his lips, even though sorrow was swirling within his amber eyes.

“Ee. I promised to stay beside you for as long as you needed me to—for as long as you asked me to. And I intend to keep that promise, Inuyasha. I would rather live my eternity in hell with you than spend forever in paradise without you. Because it wouldn’t be heaven for me, without you there to love me. My heaven is wherever you are,”

He believed that he knew her. He believed that he knew the entirety of her love for him, and the boundaries she set for it.

How wrong he was…

Because he was finding out, that her love knows no boundaries—no limitations. That Kagome loves with a totality that leaves nothing for her, because she gives it all to whom she loves.

Him.

Inuyasha, the hanyou.

Inuyasha, the worthless half-breed.

Inuyasha, the monster.

But none of that matters to her. Kagome thinks he’s worthy of her love—‘wonderful’ even, as she said. And he did want to be worthy, even for just once in his life. To feel like he deserved her love, if nothing else.

Even if he could not give her everything, he could at least give her this.

Inuyasha swallowed the large lump forming in his throat, and gave her what she needed.

“Yakusoku, Kanai,”

Kagome smiled at that, feeling at peace for the first time since all of what went on happened.

Now she could finally say goodbye to her love, knowing there would come a time she’ll say hello again.

She started to close her eyes and to let go of the jewel; only Inuyasha gripped her hand again in panic.

“What will I say to your mother, Kagome?”

Her eyes fluttered open to the sight of Inuyasha’s torment. The fear was there in his eyes, and a number of emotions she dared not analyze anymore because then she’d know how much he really hurts.

If she knew, she would spare him. But then she’d go back on her words just to pacify him.

She could not let it happen, even if it was for him.

“Tell her—“

Kagome stopped, wondering of what she would say to her mother. She wanted to tell him to tell her nothing, to never come back to her time and maybe then her mother will know. And maybe she won’t blame Inuyasha for her daughter’s death.

But she also knew her mate was an honorable man. His honor and respect would decree he come back and tell her mother himself, and take whatever condemnation would be given to him.

Kagome could only hope the words she would leave to her mother would somehow make her understand.

“Tell her that I love you, a million times more than I do myself. And she’d understand, my love. Trust me,”

The hanyou’s eyes were now starting to leak, each drop of his salty tear fell down on her own cheeks.

“And tell her that I love her, onegai. That if there were any regrets for me, it would be that I never got the chance to tell her for the last time. Say goodbye to Souta and Jii-chan for me,”

Kagome mustered a tremulous smile for her hanyou and gave him her final request.

“Now I want you to tell me again… for the last time. Aishiteru,”|

“Aishiteru, Kagome,”

She pulled down his head to kiss him one last time, their tears mingling together. With their lips joined, Inuyasha felt her slide her hand out of his grasp.

And let go of the jewel.

Only this time, he let her have her way.

Inuyasha kept his eyes closed as he felt her slipping away, his lips still on hers. Her body stilled, going lax in his embrace. The scent of death started to make it’s way to his nose.

He lifted his head and opened his eyes to look at his mate.

Kagome’s eyes were closed, as though in repose. Her mouth were parted slightly, her lips curved upward like she was still smiling. He almost convinced himself that she was only sleeping and would wake up soon…

But the coldness he felt from her still body could not convince him. Nor did the emptiness he felt in his heart could tell him otherwise. No amount of shaking would wake her now.

Kagome was gone…
