The Better Man

Chapter Thirty-Five

Kagome was laying next to the sleeping Rin when someone gently tapped on the door. Not wanting them to wake the girl up she quickly got up to peer out. She smiled when she saw Kuwabara standing there, "Hey."

"Hey, how's she doing?" He walked into the room when she opened the door wider.

"She's still sleeping, I think she'll be okay though. Would it be okay if I thanked you? If you wouldn't have gone after her, we wouldn't have found her until it was too late." Kagome looked over at the sleeping girl, "Would have been bad for all of us if Sesshoumaru would have come back to find out that we let her get killed by a car."

"Yeah, I can't believe those two idiots though. Look, I've been wanting to talk to you about something. Since, I'm not dating Yukina anymore, I was wondering if you'd go out with me tonight?" He held his breath waiting for her answer.

Her eyes widened in suprise, they weren't together anymore. When had this happened? Even if they weren't together anymore, what about the baby? "I don't know, I mean I'd like to but I don't want to ruin any chance of you two getting back together."

"Oh, don't worry about it. We have decided to be friends from now on and thats all. I'd really like to take you out. If you want you can bring Rin with us, I'm sure she'd enjoy going out."

Kagome smiled, "I guess it would be okay. I'm not sure if she'll want to come after what happened but I'll try. Maybe if we could get someone else to come with us so she doesn't feel like a third wheel?"

"Hmm," He thought about it for a few minutes. "Hey, Shizuru has tonight off, I'm sure she'll come. Let me go call her and I'll be right back. I'll also let her know whats going on."

Kagome wanted to hug him for going out of his way for them. She walked back over to the bed as Rin began to stir. Would the girl even feel like showing her face after the things Kurama had said to her? What self-esteem the girl started with probably got shot to hell and back. She wouldn't blame her if she thought little of herself now. Kagome knew how it felt to have someone belittle you and make you feel worthless.

"Kagome?" Rin peered at her, not sure if she wanted to wake up yet. Waking up meant facing everything, she wasn't ready for that. Everyone would know about her relationship now, they would look at her differently.

"How do you feel? You look alot better, you had me worried there for a minute. Glad you woke up, Kuwabara and Shizuru are thinking about going out tonight. They want us to join them if they do, it will be fun. Help us get our minds off everything."

Kuwabara tapped on the doorframe announcing he was back, "Just spoke to Shizuru, she's going to head over here. There's a new restaraunt in town she wants to try out, high class place. She said not to worry she'll bring something for both of you to wear. I'm going to head home and come back to pick you girls up."

"Thanks," Kagome nodded, very thankful for what he was doing. "Lets go hop in the shower Rin, don't think we have time to take two seperate ones." She laughed at the shocked look on her face, "Don't worry I'll keep my hands to myself."


"There that should do it," Shizuru put the last pin in, making sure the style would stay up. "Beautiful, one of my better works." She saw the girl smile as she took in her hair. She'd taken Rin's hair piling it high on her head, several braids wrapped around the base. Several shorter strands were left to frame her face completing the look. "What do you think Kagome?"

"Why didn't you do mine like that?" Kagome faked a scowl trying to act upset. The woman had done a nice job on her hair as well. Hers was pulled to the side, held together with a clip.

"You don't have her face thats why. I think a little bit of make-up and we will be ready to go." Shizuru knelt in front of her, tilting her head up.

"Do you really expect me to wear this dress?" Kagome gawked at the piece of cloth she'd been given. "I'm not going to ask where the hell you got them from."

"Just put it on, I'm sure my brother will like the way it looks." Shizuru laughed at the blush, she was glad he'd finally gotten off his ass and asked her out. She'd hadn't understood why they'd be taking Rin on their date but then she'd been informed of what happened. Thoughts of choking a certain redhead filled her mind. She was more than happy to go out with them and see that the girl had a good time. There was more than one way for Rin to get even. She for one would be more than happy to help her accomplish it. She couldn't wait to see the look on the man's face when the girl walked out of the room.

"This dress makes my ass look big, I just know it." Kagome turned sideways and eyed herself in the mirror. "What do you think?"

"I think you look nice." Rin watched her through the mirror, " Blue is definitely your color, it brings out your eyes."

"Okay, I think we are done here. Kuzuma is waiting on us, so me and you need to get dressed." Shizuru put the lipstick on the dresser. She went over and got her dress, Rin accepted hers.

"I'm not sure if I should wear this." Rin held the dress up, inspecting it. It was black crushed velvet, the material very clingy and soft. "I can't wear a bra with this thing."

"There's one built in hun, it's designed to lift what you got." Shizuru snickered and helped Rin put the dress on. It fell midthigh on her showing off most of her legs, most of her back was exposed. The shoulder straps were thin, barely enough to hold it up on her.

"Wow, it does have one of those cleavage busters in it." Kagome walked up to her pulling it up a little. "You're about to pop out of there Rin. There now you are ready to go."

Shizuru handed them the boxes with their shoes in them. "Can't forget these, there's a no shirt, no shoes, no service policy at this place."

"What about pants?" Rin asked.

"I've never thought about it. Maybe we should have Kuzuma take off his before we walk in and see if they deny us service."

Kagome blushed, "Let's not and say we did." She took the blue pumps that matched her dress. "I'm going to break my tailbone in these things. What size heels are these?"

"Only three inches, I figured you'd need the extra height walking next to him." Shizuru helped Rin put her shoes on, they had laces on them that tied in the back. "There that should do it."

All three women were ready for their night out. Shizuru grinned at them, "Well atleast one of us should get lucky tonight."

"Wouldn't that be two of us since Kuwabara will be with us also." Rin saw Kagome flush at the implication and smiled.

"Atleast my bro won't have to use his hand anymore, saves me from buying so much lotion." Shizuru started laughing when Kagome turned on her heels and walked out the room. She was glad she could make the other girl still laugh, even if it was at the cost of the other two. "Come on, I'll escort you out."

Rin linked her arm around the other girl's and smiled. "You sure I look alright?"

"You look beautiful, don't you dare believe anything else. I'm sure when we go out after dinner, we will have our pick of the guys." Shizuru placed her hand over Rin's and lend them out the room to follow the path Kagome had just taken. Almost everyone was in the living room talking, except Kurama. He was standing in the corner, glaring over at Yusuke.

"You two look great," Kuwabara smiled at them when they approached. Kagome was standing next to him still blushing. "What did you two say to her?"

"We were discussing you two getting bus..." Shizuru chuckled when a hand was placed over her mouth by the smaller woman.

"Nothing really, can we go now?" Rin asked. She wanted to get out of the room before she lost what nerve she had. The urge to cringe filled her, she could feel his eyes on her. No doubt he was inspecting her and found her lacking. The thought made her want to run back in the room and cry. Her eyes widened when Hiei suddenly appeared before her. The room became eerily quiet as he leaned forward putting his face mere inches from hers. He turned his head enough to put his face near her neck. 'Is he sniffing me?' Sure enough she could hear him sniffing, a growl low in his throat.

"What the hell are you doing man?" Yusuke yelled at him. "You're scaring her, stop it."

Hiei smirked as he pulled back, he could feel the anger coming from the otherside of the room. Good, let the fox sweat some. He heard the wolf start laughing hysterically, being the only other full blooded youkai in the room he knew what had just occured. He didn't step back, his eye roamed over her face. True she wasn't as filled out as the other girl but she was still beautiful in her own way. His gaze fell to the cleavage she was displaying, they'd fit nicely in his hands.

"Don't be such a pervert Hiei, stop staring at her chest man." Kuwabara yelled at him. "Come on, you three." He latched onto Kagome's arm and began directing her out the room. He wanted to get out of there before another fight broke out.

Shizuru pulled Rin along with her feeling the tension building in the room. She didn't think her dressing the girl up would cause this big of a stir. Then again she hadn't thought that Hiei would be interested in her. She only been wanting to prove Kurama wrong. "I'm driving bro."
