Chapter 33 – A Child on His Back
Chapter 33 – A Child on His Back
Sesshomaru stepped out of the tree line and on to the dirt road leading into the city. He dreaded this moment. The moment when he would loose the comfort of the surrounding forest. The humans traveling the road did not fail to react exactly how he imagined they would. The ones not shrinking in fear, were now pointing and making strangled noises. He tried to ignore them, as best he could, but he knew that eventually some nosy do-gooder was going to cause a scene.
The girl riding on his back, never uttered a word, but he knew that she was wide awake, and taking in the scenery. He could feel her shrink into him when the passing people singled her out. Sesshomaru could smell her fear and anxiety, which only appeared once they emerged from the forest. He supposed that she was not used to being in the presence of so many other people.
Her wounded leg kept her from walking on her own. After leaving her hut and watching her hobbling along for a short while, he finally lost his patience and picked her up. At the rate she was going, it would take two days to get back to Kagome. So here he found himself, being rode like some kind of pack animal, by a mute human child. Times had certainly changed.
For the one hundredth time he wondered what in the seven hells possessed him to not only save her, but to bring her back with him? That damn miko was making him go soft.
“YOU! DEMON! Put that child down at once!” Shouted an old monk.
‘Wonderful. I knew that the ningen’s would not fail me.’ Sesshomaru grumbled. He continued on his way, fully intending to ignore the human, but came up short when he and two other’s stepped in his path.
“Release that child at once!” The woman standing with the two monks shouted.
“Madam, I am not deaf, I simply chose to ignore you,” Sesshomaru replied indifferently.
“Ahh! How dare you speak to me in such a way, youkai filth!” The angry woman retaliated.
“Calm down. Calm down.” The second monk said as he motioned for his accomplices the back off. “Perhaps the demon has reason for holding the girl in such a familiar way.”
Sesshomaru growled at the three of them. He didn’t like what they were implying. “Not that this is any concern of yours, but the child is under my protection. Now, out of my way.” He made to step around them, but was again stopped by the elderly monk.
“Where are the child’s parents?” The old man asked suspiciously.
“Dead.” Sesshomaru replied.
“What is your name girl?” The woman asked, but the girl remained silent.
“She does not speak.” Sesshomaru informed the woman.
“Give the child to me. A child does not belong with a demon.” The old monk said, before reaching for the girl.
Sesshomaru could easily have killed all three of them, and at the moment it seemed like a nice vision, but he knew the girl had no family, and he also knew that religious humans sometimes took in orphaned ningen children. Perhaps this could be his opportunity to rid himself of this burden? So, instead of slicing the monks arm off, or leaving them standing in his dust, he decided to let them have her. It was for her own good.
“EEEEKKKKKKK!!!!! EEEEEEKKKKKKK!!!!”
The girl’s shrieks were splitting his head in two! The more the monk pulled the louder she screamed and the harder she clung to him. Not able to take any more, Sesshomaru moved with lightning speed away from the old monk. The three of them stood in awe at the surprisingly fast movement by the youkai. Sesshomaru couldn’t resist rolling his eyes in frustration. “The child is obviously attached to me, and refuses to go with you.” He sighed deeply. ‘Damn, I almost got rid of her.’ He could tell the three were not quite ready to give up on their quest to ‘save’ the girl from him, so he decided to use Kagome. “Listen, if you please, My mistress is an honored miko, here for the miko gathering. She is pure of heart, and will care for the child.”
The two monks and the woman, quieted for a moment, as they contemplated this new information, and soon shrugged in defeat, turning to continue on their way. Sesshomaru sighed in relief, and his new companion quieted her crying immediately. He could actually feel the happiness radiating off of her. Certainly a strange little human.
After being stopped two more times, by humans with misguided good intentions, Sesshomaru finally stepped onto the path leading to the dojo. He immediately felt the charge in the air emanating from the gathered miko’s. It made him a little uneasy, and he suddenly felt like this child could end up getting him killed. He had to find Kagome.
The looks he received from the miko’s gathered around, were far from kind. A couple of women actually shifted toward him as if to confront the taiyoukai about the child riding on his back. Sesshomaru never made eye contact, and hastened his way through the crowd. He ignored the inane comments from his fellow youkai, who snickered in their amusement, and pressed on, in search of his mate.
Her scent was hard to pick up with such a huge crowd, and the electric charge of the miko’s gathered also played havoc in his search.
“You there!”
‘Curse these damn human’s,’ Sesshomaru grumbled, but kept walking toward the dojo.
“You there, demon!”
Sesshomaru finally stopped, as it appeared that the one in pursuit would not give up. Turning to the woman, he was disgusted to find that wretch who shared the hut with them heading in his direction. This was turning out to be a long, and tiring day.
“What do you think you are doing with that child, you filthy beast?” Sadae questioned firmly, as she approached the slave.
“What does it appear that I am doing miko?” Sesshomaru snorted, “Carrying her.”
“Watch your tongue, beast, unless you wish it removed from your filthy mouth!” The sharp featured miko snapped. “Who does the child belong to?”
Sesshomaru was not sure if he wanted to go into this with this wench. He had already had the displeasure of dealing with her once before, and knew her prejudice to run deep. She was certain to cause much more trouble than the monks from earlier. That’s when he spotted... “Kagome.”
“Kagome?” Sadae questioned, turning to where the youkai was staring.
