Understanding

Chapter Thirty-Two

Hiei met the detective at the door. He waited for several minutes before the boy actually showed up. He really was slow so Hiei took the time to study the girl. Her wet hair clung to her face which was too pale for his liking. He looked down at her abdomen and examined her. Even if she looked like shit the child seemed to be thriving. Then again it was Yusuke's so no suprise there. He felt the boy before he saw him. As much as he knew that these two needed some time alone her family would want to know where she was.

As Yusuke let them in he contacted Kurama first. The fox and Keiko were on their way back. Seemed the ex was coming back regardless. That done he sighed and did what he was dreading he contacted Kagome.

'Miko.'

'What the fuck was that?' Wow she sounded bitchy.

'Lower your voice.'

'I can't I'm not talking jerk.'

'Hn. I found the girl. She called Genkai's she was merely lost. I've taken her to Yurameshi's.' He waited for it.

'YOU DID WHAT! Don't you dare take her over to that jerk's. I swear I'll kill your little ass.'

'You can try but its already done. Kurama and Keiko will be here shortly. I suggest you contact your family and let them know shes fine. I assume that I can't stop you from coming over here, so I instructed the fox to pick you up on his way back. The girl will need some dry clothes so make yourself useful.'

'You little shit.'

'Hn.'

Yusuke led Hiei into the living room, which to Hiei's suprise was clean and neatly decorated. Kurama's doing most likely. His bedroom was actually clean which made the little fire demon quirk an eyebrow. He placed the girl on the bed, he left the room and waitied in living room.

Yusuke watched him leave out the corner of his eye. He was in his bathroom grabbing a towel to dry her off. She needed to get dry and into bed. At least Hiei had placed her all the way to one side so the whole bed didn't get damp. Kurama had suggested on a queen size bed for the room and Yusuke was glad he'd taken the fox's advice. He grabbed one of his long t-shirts from the dresser.

Going over to the bed he had to mentally shake himself. He could look at her later, her health came first. He quickly removed the wet clothes. Having that done he started to dry her, she moaned in her sleep. A few times he was suprised that she didn't wake up. Getting the shirt on her proved difficult after being dry she decided to roll over on her side. He was pulling her hair out the shirt when she swatted his hand away. For a second he'd been scared she'd woken up and didn't want him touching her. Yet she continued to sleep on. He moved her to the dry side of the bed and pulled the cover up to her waist.

Squatting beside the bed he watched her. He could hear Hiei in the extra bathroom messing around. One hand was laying on the bed while his other began to stroke her face. A smile split his face when he heard the small snore emitting from her. His breath caught when her eyes opened.

Sango felt extremely warm and comfortable for some reason. She was laying on her left side, dry and in someone's bed. Before opening her eyes she tried to remember what had happened. She'd gotten lost and made a call then sat against a store somewhere to wait out the storm. This was not her bed at the shrine, was way too soft. A hand was stroking her face, almost loving. 'Great, I'm back in that hospital place.' Her eyes snapped open expecting to find Mrs. Higurashi sitting beside her worrying like a mother hen. Her breath caught at seeing Yusuke looking at her. 'Where the hell am I?'

As if sensing her question he answered. "Genkai sent Hiei to find you after you called the temple. I asked him to bring you here. Kagome and Kurama will be here shortly. I hope you don't mind."

Sango didn't know what to say. Surely his new girlfriend wouldn't want her there. "No need to inconvience yourself over me. I don't want to cause any problems." She tried sitting up and a wave of dizzyness hit her.

"You should get some sleep. I'll leave the room if you want me to but don't get up. Lay back down and get some rest."

"No, I won't impose on you any longer," A noise was heard from the spare bedroom. "Besides I don't think your 'company' will want me here."

Yusuke suddenly remember what had made her upset. "It's just Hiei. No one else lives here but me Sango. Keiko came by earlier she told me what you both thought."

Sango blushed. Yet didn't say anything. Her heart leapt at the news but it still didn't mean he wasn't seeing anyone else. It didn't mean he wanted her either. She placed her head on the pillow her earlier exhaustion hitting her once more. "Why did you tell Hiei to bring me here, couldn't he have taken me back to the shrine?"

"Yeah but I wanted to tell you something." When she didn't say anything else he continued. Hell he wasn't very good at expressing his feelings nor telling someone how he felt. She never took her eyes off his face. There was a loud knock at the door, but he wanted to tell her before he lost his chance. "I'm sorry." He leaned over and placed a kiss on her forehead. "I love you." He didn't wait for her reaction but stood up and left the room.

She tried reaching for his hand but he moved too quick for her. She could hear raised voices somewhere in the back of her mind as she drifted of to sleep once more. For the first time in months she fell asleep with a smile on her face.

Kagome waited for him to open the door. As soon as he did, her tiny fist connected with his lip. He just stared at her, "There, now I'm happy." She pushed past him. Kurama and Keiko were behind her. All the fox did was sigh while his ex giggled. Kagome walked into the place and was impressed. It was actually a nice apartment. On the way over Keiko had tried to talk to the pissed off miko. Keiko tried to get her to understand that the reason Yusuke hadn't spoken to her friend was because he felt like he didn't deserve her. Supposedly, he'd been trying to get his shit together for the last couple months. Kagome didn't see it as an excuse. Sango was from another time, a different place. All she had wanted was the man. Didn't the idiot know that all she needed was for him to be with her. The only thing that kept Kagome trying to kill him was the fact that it would hurt Sango and she hoped that he finally had his head out his ass.

Kurama had made the comment about how it was important for everyone to find what made them happy as Yusuke opened the door. He was hiding a smile from his friend. It wasn't polite to laugh at seeing your friend being punched in the face, by your own girlfriend at that.

Keiko heard someone in the spare bedroom as soon as she entered the home. "Shouldn't Sango be sleeping."

"She is, that's Hiei." Yusuke stated. He left them there to go see just what the hell the little demon was doing. He walked into the room and almost fell over. "How the hell did you do that?" In that little bit of time the piece of furniture himself and Kurama had been having so much difficulty with was almost completely erected.

Kurama was amazed as he looked in behind Yusuke. Who knew Hiei would be good at carpentary. "Why aren't I suprised?"

Hiei stopped to see them both gawking at him. "Hn. I figured by the time you two idiots figured it out, the child will have already graduated that ningen school of yours. How about fixing some dinner instead of standing there gawking. I will finish this up."

Keiko walked into the room and looked around. "Room looks a lot better without the mess. Though you need to get rid of those curtains Yusuke. Flowery curtains won't do you know, after all its a boy. Try trains or cars."

"Teddy bears," Kagome stated from behind them. "Sango has a thing for teddybears. Some of the stuff picked out is in teddybears. We figured it would go with a boy or girl." Kurama was smiling at her. "Don't get any ideas."

"What?"

Keiko grabbed Kagome, "Come on lets see what Yusuke has in the kitchen to make for dinner. I'm sure Sango will be hungry when she wakes up. Kurama is a decent cook but I don't want the poor girl left to eat anything Yusuke makes."

"Fine." She let herself be pulled away.

"Come on Yusuke, lets clean up some while Hiei finishs up the crib."

Sango woke up when the smell of something good drifted into the bedroom. Voices could be heard echoing down the hall. She didn't get straight up instead she buried her face into the pillow. What had he apologized for? Did it matter? No, not if he meant the last thing he'd said. Could she forgive him for leaving her for so long? It didn't take the girl long to debate over the answer. She remembered thinking Kagome a fool all those times Kagome had thrown herself in Inuyasha's arms after he'd just hurt her by running of to be with Kikyo. No matter what Inuyasha had done Kagome had forgiven him and offered her love. Sango undertood how it was possible. In her short life she'd watched her family slain, her brother put through hell and she'd lost her first love. If life presented her with the chance at being with Yusuke she'd take it.

Her stomach growled as the scent drifted in once more. Deciding to get up she threw the covers off her. A blush spread across face at finding herself wearing a strange t-shirt and nothing else. Yusuke must have stripped her. She couldn't go out wearing this, she could hear Kurama and Hiei's voice. She got up on unsteady legs and walked to the closet and found what she needed. A white cotton robe was pulled over her. It would do for now.

Kagome was sitting at the kitchen table talking to Keiko when she spotted Sango. How the apartment was set up, you couldn't see the long hallway from the living room unless you were standing in front of it. The table was placed giving a view straight down the hallway. She watched the girl walk down the hall. When she got in range of hearing Kagome shouted, "The last time I saw you dressed like that you were swinging Hiraikotsu at Miroku's head. You're not possessed this time are you?"

Sango remembered that very well. "No but I'm still liable to swing something at your head."

Kagome knew everyone was listening. "Just don't start stripping like Inuyasha."

"Can't promise anything." Sango replied. But the thought of stripping in front of three men didn't appeal to her. She kept her attention focused on Kagome and walked over to sit at the table.

"I'm not sure I want to know." Keiko said. "I bet you two have some awesome stories to tell."

"Would make your head spin probably. I can't imagine how many times I almost died." Kagome said. Kurama looked over at her on that statement. Which she ignored it, she still wouldn't have him treating her like she was helpless. "You might find this hard to believe but the first time me and Sango met she attacked us."

"No way."

"Yes, I did." Sango had to smile at the memory. What had caused it was now a small ache, but remembering it wasn't that bad. "I was trying to kill Inuyasha."

"That's understandable." Kurama muttered.

"You know it seemed all our friends seemed to fight Inuyasha the first time we met. First there was me, when he tried to kill me." She ignored the growl from the couch. "Then there was Sesshomaru, Miroku, and even Kouga. Though Kouga and Inuyasha fought everytime they got near one another. Oh yeah there was Shippo, I wouldn't call that a fight but they didn't get along." She paused. "Hell he even fought with Kikyo when she was brought back. But I guess she did attack him and had just sucked my soul out."

"You had your soul sucked out?" Keiko stared at her in awe.

Kagome waved her hand in the air. "Oh, it was nothing really. You see this witch stole Kikyo's ashes and brought her back in order to find jewel shards. But I had already been reincarnated so it didn't work at first. Me, Inuyasha and Kaede were on our way to get the ashes back when she took me. God, that stuff she had me lying in was vile. Upon hearing Inuyasha speak Kikyo's name tore my soul out. I got almost all of it back but Kikyo kept a small portion and remained walking around as a clay pot you see."

Sango burst out laughing hearing the comparison. "You say that now. But how many times didn't you risk your life to save hers?"

"Well, that was different. I couldn't just let her die when Inuyasha loved her. Besides we know why she was like that. I'd be pissed to if I died thinking the man I loved had killed me. Then being brought back as the walking dead. Plus the idea of having Naraku's lusting after you would put anyone in a foul mood." A shiver passed down her spine. "I don't see how you didn't get the creeps since he did ask you to join him."

Sango didn't say anything. Naraku had indeed asked her that when she'd brought him the Tetsusiaga. "Well, we both gave him my answer. Though yours worked better than mine. Mine almost got us killed. Yours left only his head."

"Those were the days." Kagome had a wistful look on her face.

"You both must be crazy, I don't think I could have lived through all that." Keiko was more than interested. She'd been kidnapped a few times and had watched Yusuke fight in a tournament. "Who was Kouga?"

"The cure for boring days." Sango stated and watched Kagome flush. It was time for her to squirm. "Now, that was classic." Sango tried to mock him. " 'I'm in love with you Kagome.' Real original."

"Oh, shut up. He didn't sound like that. It was sweet."

"Yeah, every girls fantasy. 'Let's get kidnapped by some horny wolf demon with no manners, that won't kill me because I can see the jewel shards. Lets push aside the fact that his best friend asked if he could eat my liver.' " Sango continued. "Yeah, and they wanted to eat Shippo."

"But they didn't thats the whole point. Kouga turned around."

"Only because he fancied himself in love with you."

"Yeah, thats true. I did them a favor though, I'm sure fox demons would give anyone indegestion."

"Excuse me," Kurama spoke up. Him and Yusuke had stopped their talking to listen to the topic at the table.

They ignored him. Keiko spoke up again. "Wow, how many men did you have after you Kagome?"

"Not as many as Sango." A kick to the shin made her chuckle. "Well its true, the one's after you just happened to be killed or beat up so they left. Lets see, Miroku, I'm sure Naraku would have banged you, there was that one Lord that wanted to marry you, there was that one Lord who was going to take you when they couldn't find Koharu, then there was that demon that was dragging you under the water to make you his mistress."

"Ok, we get the point." Yusuke didn't want to hear that shit.

"Ok lets count yours Kagome. First Inuyasha, Kouga, at one point Miroku would have banged you, Naraku you do look almost like Kikyo after all, that Hojo guy that had the celestrial robe, lets add the Hojo from this time." She saw Kagome start choking on her tea. "So there, I'm sure there's more I just can't recall. Oh weren't you about to be raped when Sesshomaru showed up that one time."

"Yep, one of the few times I was happy to see him. Nice to see him impaling someone besides Inuyasha. Had to feel sorry for the poor guy though, Sesshomaru's poison wasn't very pleasant. Actually the first time we fought him he tried to kill me along with Inuyasha. Cocky bastard would have melted me to death if I hadn't been holding Tetsusiaga. I don't think I'd look good as pudding. Talk about sibling rivalry."

"No wonder you two are so strong." Keiko stared at them in awe.

"Oh, now unlike myself Sango grew up as a Tiajiya. I was pulled through the well by Mrs. Centipede, I was no fighter. After trying to kill me Inuyasha ended saving my life many times. That grumpy bastard tried to cut me in several pieces too."

"Thats your first love right." Keiko heard Kurama give a snort. Oh well, he could live with it.

"Yep, when I came through the well he was pinned to the Sacred Tree. You see when Kikyo thought Inuyasha had inflicted the wound that would later take her life she pinned him there with an arrow. I came through and found him there. I remember stepping up and rubbing his ears. Keade took me back to her village then Mrs. Centipede attacked after me. She wanted the Shikon jewel that was inside my body. I ran and ended up back at the tree. For some reason Inuyasha was awake when I got to him. I was able to pull the arrow out, he managed to kill her but not before she managed to rip the jewel out my body. I got a scar from that too. Once she was dead I had the jewel in my hand. Inuyasha wanted it so he tried to kill me for it."

"Do you have a habit of falling for men that try to kill you?" Hiei asked.

She then explained how the rosary had worked and how the jewel became shattered.

"Why did Sango try to fight you at first?" Keiko asked.

Sango answered. "My village had a few shards. Naraku set my father and fellow taijiya up to be away from the village. While we were away he attacked and killed everyone. At the castle were my father and brother were along with several members we were tricked. Naraku was controlling my brother, Kohaku killed our father first, then everyone else then came after me. I tried to stop him, I was wounded. The guards at the castle tried to kill both of us. I was buried for dead and Naraku took Kohaku. I was tricked by Naraku into believing it had been all Inuyasha's doing."

"But weren't you wounded."

"Yes, she was." Kagome knew talking about it had to bother her. "She was dying but planned on taking Inuyasha with her. Idiot wouldn't stop fighting."

The buzzer went off announcing that dinner was done.
