Chapter Thirty-One

The room was filled with curses as a clatter of boards were heard. Neither boy heard the knock on the door. Keiko let herself in the apartment. She didn't bother calling out, but walked to where all the noise was coming from. She was standing in the doorway of the second bedroom watching Yusuke and Kurama. Her ex was holding his foot while Kurama laughed.

"Dammit that hurt! Watch what you're fucking doing, you almost broke my toe."

"I told you to buy one already made. It would have been much simpler." Kurama sighed.

"You said she wanted this one dammit. It's not my fault we have to put it all together." Yusuke kicked the board.

"What are you building?" They jumped at the voice. Keiko smiled that she'd caught them both off guard. "Sorry door wasn't locked and I knocked."

"R..i..g..ht." Yusuke looked down at the mess on the floor. He was getting irritated. "What are you doing here?"

"I could ask you the same." She glared at him.

"What the fuck is that suppose to mean?"

Kurama decided he needed something cold to drink. He excused himself and made a beeline to the kitchen.

"Who lives here with you?" She asked.

"No one yet."

"Yet? You have to be the biggest idiot I know. I thought Kuwabara was a dimwit but you take the cake." She walked into the room. He had a sheepish look on his face.

"What got your panties in a knot?"

"Would you like to know who I had lunch with today?" When he didn't answer she continued. "Well lets see she's about my height, long black hair, oh yeah she's almost six months pregnant and for some reason wants your narrow ass. Why haven't you spoken to her yet?"

"I don't know what to say."

"How bout I'm sorry I'm such an ass." Keiko looked around the room and noticed that they were in the process of building. "What's this?"

"What does it look like." Was the smart ass reply.

"Right now it looks like a pile of junk on the floor." She grabbed the box, the supplies had came in. "A crib? You mean you're fixing the place up for her?"

"Who else would I be doing it for?"

"I wasn't sure to be honest. When we spoke today it became clear you hadn't spoken to her yet. OH SHIT!" Keiko swore. Kurama came in at the outburst.

"What's wrong?" He took a sip of the ice water.

"I don't think I wanna tell you. Oops, I think I may have made a big mistake. I'm so sorry Yusuke." She backed up.

Yusuke didn't like the way she was apologizing. Keiko hardly ever admitted to making a mistake. She started making her way to the door. "No you don't Keiko." He grabbed her arm before she could leave. "What did you do?"

"Okay but don't yell at me. It was an honest slip up." This wasn't going to be good. Kurama was standing within hearing distance. "Well, I made the mention that you got your own place."

"AND?"

"Well when I found out that you two weren't together I kind of implied that you had someone else living with you." There she'd said it, it sounded even worse telling him.

"Dammit Keiko."

"I'm sorry. It just kind of slipped out."

Kurama didn't need to hear anything else. He'd been lying to Yusuke all these months. Everyday he'd ask about her and Kurama would exaggerate and say she was fine. The girl was an emotional wreck on most days. "Fuck," he grabbed his cell phone and dialed the shrine.

Mrs. Higurashi answered the line, "Kagome?"

"No, this is Kurama. Is she home?"

"Oh dear. No she isn't. Souta came home over two hours ago and said he'd seen Sango run out the mall crying. They are all out looking for her. I'm waiting by the phone, they are suppose to call if they find her."

Kurama rubbed his forehead. "I'm going to keep my phone on can you or Kagome call me as soon as you find her? We will head out and look also."

"Thank you so much." She hung up the phone.

Keiko didn't need to be told what the woman had said. "Yusuke, I'm sorry. It's my fault for jumping to conclusions."

Kurama knew she was close to tears. "We know you wouldn't hurt her on purpose Keiko. Let's go help find her." Before he could finish Yusuke was already out the door.

Sango was walking along a side street somewhere. She'd been so upset she left Souta there by himself. After crying and walking for over an hour she remembered him and turned to go back. In her desperation to be alone she'd walked into a part of time she'd never been. She had no idea where she was or how to get back home. She picked a street and tried that way. An hour later she was more lost than she'd been to begin with. She didn't know the number in which to call the shrine either. They had never taught her it.

She dug in her purse, and found a piece of paper. Shizuru had given it to her, she wasn't sure what number it belonged to but it was better than nothing. Sango dug out some change, she wasn't sure how much it would cost so she put most of the coins in the machine then dialed the number as written. After four rings an elderly woman picked up the phone. "Yes."

"Hello. My name is Sango, Shizuru gave me this number a while back. I don't know Kurama's number or Kagome's and I'm lost." The phone went dead on her just as the sky opened up. "Dammit!" She slammed the speaking piece back down. Within seconds she was drenched and cold. It was already getting dark outside. "Great, good going stupid."

Genkai heard the line go dead. She walked outside to see Hiei once again lounging on her roof top. "Hiei, Yusuke's mate is in town somewhere lost. She can't get in touch with anyone else." The demon was gone the second she finished. "Hn." She walked back inside, it was about to storm.

Sango couldn't find anywhere to take shelter. The only trees around were in people's yards and she knew that in this era to walk on the property was bad. There was a small store further down the road, so thats where she headed. She mentally kicked herself for not learning more about this era. There was probably an easy way to find Kagome but she didn't know how. She took cover in front of the store. She leaned against the building, it helped keep most of the rain off her. She sank to her knees feeling very tired. A few minutes later she was being picked up.

Hiei could feel the heat coming from her body. Silly girl was going to get sick from being exposed. What the hell was she doing this far out and in her condition? He thought about taking her back to the shrine but had a better idea. He searched until he found the detective. Panic and fear came through as he opened a mental link with the boy. 'Detective.'

'Not now Hiei.'

'Very well but I have something you might want. Guess not I'll take her back to the shrine.'

'Wait, is she okay?'

'Hn. Where should I meet you?' Hiei was already heading towards Yusuke's place before the boy answered.
