CHAPTER 17, PART IV - THE SUMMONS

Chapter Seventeen, Part IV - The Summons
So engrossed was she in her own thoughts that she failed to hear the connecting door to her room open. Her husband's presence didn't register until his arms wrapped around her in a tight embrace. Inuyasha held her and buried his face in her hair, as though wanting to indelibly imprint her scent in his mind. Kagome never thought to fight him. She turned in his arms instead, catching his lips with her own in a searing kiss. He carried her in his arms and laid her down on the bed without breaking the kiss.
The desperation of the moment wasn't lost on them both. They made love slowly, wanting to savor each moment. They drowned in both of their sighs, the moans and the sound of them becoming one. Inuyasha took his time loving her, bringing her to euphoria again and again. He gave her everything, not asking for anything else but her sweet response to him. Kagome gave him everything... and more. She told him she loved him.
After their beautiful love-making, Kagome was nervous as to what her husband's reaction would be to her declaration of love. She was regretting having said it for she didn't want to burden him further. But Inuyasha said nothing, only holding her close as much as their skin would allow. No more words were needed.
At that moment, Kagome knew. Tears formed again in her eyes, but she blinked them back mercilessly. The day will come when they can freely say what they feel about each other. Until that day comes, they will have to say it in deed rather than words. It would have to be enough for now.
And so they slept, waking to make love and sleeping yet again. The pattern continued until dawn was nearly upon them. They spent the day wrapped in each other's arms, not knowing if things will still be the same once they rejoined the king's court.
But for now, in that moment, they belonged to each other.

They left early the next day.
Kaede, Myouga and the whole staff lined theirselves once again at the stairs to bid them goodbye. The castle would be lonely once more without the duke and duchess.
"Take care of things here while I'm gone, Kaede-baa, Myouga-jii. We'll come back as soon as we can,"
Kaede had tears in her eyes and Myouga had a fornlorn expression, but they both nodded in unison to Inuyasha's request and composed themselves in time. Kagome had no such restraint. She launched herself in Kaede's arms and began crying in earnest, telling them she was going to miss living in the castle. Inuyasha had to gently pry her out of Kaede's embrace and put her inside the waiting carriage. After a final wave to his staff, Inuyasha gave the command to ride.
And so their journey where everything began for them started.
