------~~~~~~Inside the Shikon No Tama~~~~~~------
6 Years After the Death of Kagome Higurashi…
“Kagome…” A soothing voice called.
“Its time to wake up now Kagome…” the voice called again.
Kagome clenched her eyes shut, her brow furrowed in confusion.
Her eyes fluttered open to reveal a light blue sky. The clouds drifted lazily in the light of the glowing sun.
She squinted her eyes to ward off the bright light shinning in her face. It was warm out, the perfect temperature.
The sat up slowly and looked around for the source of the voice. She could see no one in the immediate area, but she could sense a powerful presence of miko energy near by.
“Kagome, it is time for you to rise child.” The voice whispered to her, almost caressing her cheek as it spoke to her.
The voice was feminine and soothing. It seemed to familiar but she just could not figure out where she had heard the voice.
“Who are you?” she asked the voice cautiously.
“You know very well who I am Kagome, I have been with you since you were a child. I have spoken to you in your dreams for a long time.” the voice said in an attempt to comfort the young girl.
“I don’t understand… where am I?” Kagome inquired more to herself then to the disembodied voice.
“You’ve been here for a long time, in a peaceful slumber, but now it is time for you to wake up. Wake up Kagome.” the voice said.
Her eyes shot open and she sat up an instant later. Her body covered in a cold sweat, a confused look crossing through her shinning brown eyes. She looked around frantically.
Her eyes landed first on a soft bed of green grass on which she sat. Next her site searched the beautiful field around her.
The valley reminded her so much of the valley she had grown to love and know as a place of happiness. The flowers bloomed all around her and the trees grew strong and tall. The pines sat proudly around the field of grass and flowers.
She looked to the sky and took in the pleasing scent of the flowers and fresh clean air, when she was satisfied with the deep breaths she took she turned her head again to the vast expanse of flowers.
She continued to look around when her eyes fell on a young woman kneeling on the ground next to where she sat.
The woman had long black hair and eyes of the most beautiful honey brown color she had ever seen. She wore the tradition priestess garb consisting of a plane white haori and bright red hakama.
She bore the armor of a demon slayer and carried a sword attached at her hip. Her armor sparkled as she moved when the sun caught it just right.
Her hair and clothes seemed to be fluttering in a breeze that Kagome could not feel. She stared at the woman curiously. This woman seemed almost ethereal, goddess like.
I have seen this woman before… where have I seen her?
“Who… who are you?” Kagome asked, her eyes narrowed and she shook her head from side to side as if trying to shake something off. She couldn’t help feeling a sense of déjà vu.
“Why Kagome, I have been protecting you your entire life.” said the woman.
“I feel like I should know you…” said Kagome, her head tilted down, her eyes remained half open and she fiddled with the grass below her.
“I am the Lady Midoriko.” the woman responded in answer to Kagome’s question.
“You… are Midoriko? Then… Where am I? You… died centuries ago.. How are you here now?” Kagome asked, a million questions ran through her mind.
She continued to pull absentmindedly at the fresh grass below her, and yet the grass seemed to stay the same. She picked a flower and another replaced it an second later.
She continued to marvel at both the woman’s confession and the strange field.
“Yes my dear, it is true I did pass many centuries ago.” the lady responded, deliberately avoiding her other questions.
Kagome looked up sharply and scanned the area once again.
“Where’s InuYasha?! And Sango, Miroku and Shippou… Where are they?! Are they alright?!” Kagome asked in a panic.
She jumped to her feet and scanned the area again, this time she did not see the flowers, nor did she see the lush grass of this odd, magical place.
The majestic trees went unnoticed as she searched for her friends…
Her companions…
Her family…
“Calm yourself child, they cannot come to this place. Rest assured however, they are alive and well.” Midoriko replied.
“Where… are we? How did I get here?” she asked.
“You died Kagome. In that final battle you were killed, but your soul became trapped here. Do you not remember your words to the priestess Kikyou?” the older woman asked.
What… Kikyou… I’m confused… Kagome thought
“Kikyou… wait… I DIED?!” Kagome yelled.
“Yes Kagome.” she replied calmly.
“You said… you said my soul became trapped. Where am I?” asked Kagome. She was confused and her head hurt.
“My dear Kagome… You are trapped within the Shikon No Tama. Your soul has been at rest here for about six years now, but it is time for you to make a choice.” Midoriko said.
“A… a choice? What kind of choice?” Kagome asked, she shaking her head once again. She didn’t have a clue what the woman before her was talking about.
“Kagome. I can grant you another chance at life. One last chance, however, if this is what you choose, be warned that things have changed. All will not be as it once was.” Midoriko told the younger woman.
“Another chance…?” Kagome asked her hopes a little higher.
A small hopeful smile formed on her lips.
“That’s right. I can give you your body and return your soul, you will be as you were before your death, you can return to your friends.”
My… friends? she thought
“How are they?” Kagome asked. She had been wondering what had become of her friends once she had been informed of her own death.
“The young demon slayer has adopted the kit in your absence and has married with the monk. They fulfilled their union about a year after your death.” she began.
“InuYasha still see’s Kikyou, however he no longer wishes to be with her. He still watches over the well… and the valley though it is not as it once was. He waits for you… he believes you will never return and still he waits for you.” she said.
“Kagome. There is something you should know before I can grant you this chance.” she said suddenly as if the thought had just occurred.
“What is it?” the young woman asked, chewing on her lower lip nervously.
“The well will close. You will have to choose what side you wish to live.” she began.
“It will allow you one chance to change your mind and one chance only. Once you cross the boundaries between this time and the other, you will never be able to return.” Midoriko said sternly.
The meaning to her words written in Kagome’s memory as clear as the day she had fallen through the well.
“So… Mama… Souta… Jii-chan? If I choose to live… ill have to choose who I will never see again?” asked Kagome.
“That’s right Kagome. I can grant you only one life. Not two.” Midoriko replied.
She was torn.
She didn’t know what to choose, she wanted to live, she wanted to be with everyone.
That was just the problem however, she wanted to be with EVERYONE not just one side of the well….
“Kagome, you must make your choice, time is of the essence.” Midoriko warned.
“Whatever side I choose… will I be able to say goodbye?” Kagome asked her, fear in her eyes.
“You will, but not in person. Which ever side you choose to remain in, you may visit each of the people you wish to say goodbye to on the other side in their dreams, however, you will only be able to go to each of them one time. Choose wisely.” the older priestess said.
She believed in Kagome and she knew she what choice the girl would make. It was a matter of the heart.
She knew Kagome would be hurt either side she chose but she also knew that as long as she could say goodbye to the other world one way or the other she would be ok.
“Have you made your decision child?” she asked.
“Yes Midoriko. I have. I choose to live. I choose to stay here in the feudal era.” Kagome said determination in her voice.
“So be it.” that was the last thing Kagome heard before she saw a bright pink light surround her.
No longer was she seated on the lush field of grass, no longer was she surrounded by the beautiful colored flowers, no longer was she able to look up and see the clear blue sky.
No longer was she trapped within the Shikon no Tama…
