A Sister's Decision, A Familiar Face
(A/N: Thanks again for all of the reviews and I’m sorry to those who can’t stand how… ‘motherly’ and understanding Kikyo is…! I just think she’s always been portrayed as the bitch WAY too much, so I thought this was a nice change! STILL…it does make you wonder how she’s gonna change when SHE becomes Kagome’s shadow and Inuyasha wants the younger sister, *tee hee hee* Anyway, thanks to EVERYONE who reads and reviews!)
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Kagome remained bowed in front of Kikyo and Inuyasha as they sat at the kotatsu the next morning. Inuyasha eyed Kagome warily in her miko robes; with her curly hair pulled and held back the same way Kikyo wore hers, Inuyasha could have easily mistaken Kagome for Kikyo…if Kikyo weren’t sitting right beside him.
“…and…I just wanted to say I was sorry for how I acted. It was impulsive and well…just plain stupid of me. I’m sorry Oneesama…sorry…O…Oniisama…”
Kikyo looked at Inuyasha with a smile and a nod. Kikyo had prepared to talk to Kagome after last night’s fiasco, but could see her sister had come to them with great humility and shame over her actions last night. Inuyasha sighed and leaned over, putting his hand on Kagome’s head. Kagome raised her head, almost as if surprised by the action. She looked up only to see Inuyasha gently smiling at her.
“Hey, don’t worry about it, kiddo. I know things have been…crazy around here, what with you starting junior high and everything.”
“Which reminds me, Kagome-Chan, I received your school uniform today. Why don’t you try it on?”
Kagome blinked away the tears falling down her cheeks as Kikyo handed her the green uniform, pressed fresh and wrapped in plastic. Kagome hesitantly took the uniform from her and held it to her chest.
“Does…does this mean…”
“Congratulations, Kagome-Chan! I’m so proud of you…!” Kikyo smiled, resting her hands on Kagome’s shoulders.
Kagome bit down on her lip to keep from crying.
“H…how? How can you still be so nice to me after how I acted, Oneechan…? I…”
Kikyo looked at Kagome as if she were taken aback. Inuyasha cleared his throat before excusing himself—something about wanting to find something to snack on. He closed the sliding door behind him and made his way to the kitchen. He knew the two sisters needed privacy. Back inside of the living room, Kikyo could only smile as she wiped her sister’s tears away with the sleeve of her own priestess’s garb.
“Kagome-Chan…I am your sister and I care for you beyond words. I know you feel upset and think that I am upset with you, but believe me when I say it’s alright.”
Kagome looked up at Kikyo in surprise. The two sisters remained on their knees, the older one’s hands on the younger one’s.
“But…I…I…”
“It’s alright, Kagome. I believe I am at fault as well…”
”No, never you! I’m the one…!” Kagome said, fresh tears bathing under her cheeks.
Kikyo could only smile and hug Kagome to her, stroking her soft, black hair.
“Kagome-Chan…I have been aware of your feelings for Inuyasha for some time now.”
Kagome blushed, feeling as if she’d been caught.
“I…”
”It’s alright. I understand how you feel. Inuyasha is the only main male influence you’ve been around, except for your classmates. Maybe I have sheltered you a bit too much, but…”
Kagome looked up at Kikyo, her beauty blurred by Kagome’s tears. Kikyo wiped her sister’s tears away and offered a kindly smile.
“It’s alright, Kagome. I know you didn’t mean any harm, to Inuyasha or I, but I must ask you…please, never do that sort of thing again.”
“I…”
”Kagome, I only ask you this because I am worried. When a woman throws herself at a man like that, she may get results she didn’t expect…Promise me that with any man you encounter, you will carry yourself with honor and dignity.”
Kagome nodded in understanding and Kikyo smiled.
“Good. Kagome-Chan, that is your lesson for the day. Now, start on your duties and I’ll join you shortly.”
Kagome smiled and gave a nod. She clenched the uniform to her chest and stood up, bowing as she excused herself once more. She was making her way to room when she felt a strong hand on her shoulder. She turned, seeing Inuyasha smiling at her.
“Feel better?”
”Yeah…I do.”
“I just wantcha to know…I didn’t mean to…well…that whole incident…last night I mean…”
Kagome giggled, noticing he was turning red. She shook her head and sighed.
“Don’t worry about it, Niichan! I’m so over it!”
“Oh…okay then. So, what are you about to do next?”
Kagome looked at the uniform clenched to her chest and shrugged.
“Well, I was thinking about trying on my uniform just to made sure it fit, then I was going to do my duties around the shrine…”
The shrill ring of the telephone caught Kagome’s attention. Kikyo exited the small room gracefully and picked up the phone.
“Higurashi shrine. This is Kikyo speaking.”
Inuyasha and Kagome looked at each other before looking at Kikyo who replied to whoever was on the other line with;
“Yes…I can take care of that for you right away. I’ll be there soon. Goodbye.”
Kikyo hung up the phone and looked at the twosome standing by the stairs.
“It seems there’s a exorcism I must perform..”
”Sounds serious…!” her younger sibling replied with a gasp.
”Feh…it’s nothing Kikyo can’t handle.”
Kagome ignored the pang of jealousy she felt; hearing Inuyasha praise Kikyo in his own, brash way often made Kagome jealous.
“Kagome, would you like to come?”
The look on Kagome’s face would have been amusing had the situation not been so serious.
“What are you saying? You never take Kagome on exorcisms!” Inuyasha interjected.
Kikyo shot Inuyasha a small glare for questioning her judgment. Kagome didn’t miss Inuyasha shying back a little. Kikyo gave a nod and breathed a sigh.
“And for good reason; Kagome’s body doesn’t put up a spiritual barrier that keeps wandering spirits and entities from entering her body and possessing her.”
”Don’t remind me…” Kagome shuddered.
Kagome’s mind instantly raced back to a time when she was five. Kikyo, even at the age of eight, was performing exorcisms and such and decided to bring Kagome a long to teach her something. It’d taken almost a week to exorcise the vengeful cat demon out of her body! Kikyo walked over to Kagome and placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Kagome, I believe this is one you will want to accompany me on…”
Kikyo closed her eyes before opening them.
“We’re performing the exorcism at your new school.”
”What?!” Inuyasha and Kagome yelled in unison.
Kikyo enjoyed the shared look of shock in their faces and giggled a little.
“It would be a good thing for Kagome and she could make some friends at the same time.”
”Oneechan! I don’t start school until tomorrow…! Couldn’t I make my debut then?”
”I understand you’re scared, Kagome, but remember,”
Kikyo’s gaze narrowed as looked at Kagome.
“We are priestesses…we help people with this sort of thing. You mustn’t forget your duties.”
Kagome opened her mouth to protest, but that look on Kikyo’s face spoke in volumes that defiance wasn’t an option. Kagome released a small breath and nodded.
“Yes, Kikyo.”
”Very good. I’ll get prepared; Inuyasha, you will come with us, won’t you?”
“Feh! Why wouldn’t I? My demonic features may be suppressed, but when it comes to ghosts and scary crap like that, you know my demon blood is just as strong and as active. Besides, it’s been a while since you’ve taken me on a mission with you.” He almost sounded insulted.
Kikyo raised her hand to her mouth as she giggled a little.
”Yes, it has been a while. We make the best team.”
“You know it.” He smirked at her.
Kagome sighed and prepared to get ready. She had to admit, she was very excited, but at the same time, felt as if her high school debut would be ruined. Nevermind the fact that she’d be cutting into the ‘indomitable’ team of Kikyo and Inuyasha. Kagome headed to her room and began to undress. Despite the fact Kikyo almost always wore her red and white priestess’s robes when she went out, when Kagome went out with Kikyo, which was rare, Kagome swapped out her red pants for a pair of black ones. Kagome reached into the top of her closet and brought down a small box. Opening the box, she reached inside and grabbed her black armguards; somehow, despite Kagome’s bettering archery form, the bowstring always ran against her arm when it fired, disturbing Kagome’s aim from the pain. While Kagome had learned to fire accurately and endure the pain, Kikyo had made Kagome special armguards to prevent this from happening. Once prepared, Kagome took a long look in the mirror; this was not only her first junior-high school debut, but her first debut as a full-fledge priestess. Kagome allowed herself a small smile; if Kikyo wanted Kagome to accompany her, then that could only mean one thing; Kikyo really was proud of her.
Kagome released a sigh as she headed downstairs and saw Kikyo standing with Inuyasha in the doorway waiting for her. Inuyasha seemed irritated that Kikyo refused to let him go with her dressed in his normal red outfit. Obviously Inuyasha received some form of punishment for his disobedience because he was standing in the doorway dressed in a pair of navy navy-blue loose pants, resembling Kikyo and Kagome’s red and black ones and a white kimono top, but Inuyasha refused to wear the sleeves all the way down his arms and had settled for rolling them up, exposing his arms.
“Finally, can we go now?” Inuyasha sighed.
“Inuyasha, are you that uncomfortable wearing those clothes?” Kikyo repressed a giggle.
”Bite me.”
Kikyo ignored his smart remark in favor of Kagome. Kikyo smiled warmly; Kagome looked like more of a woman than anything in her ‘professional’ miko robes.
“Before we leave…Kagome-Chan, there is something I want to give you.”
“Give me…?”
“Yes, please, come with me.”
Kagome wasn’t sure what to expect when Kikyo led her to the doors of the attached dojo. It was inside the large dojo that both sisters practiced their archery with both stationary and moving targets and often, Inuyasha would practice his swordsmanship. But Kagome saw neither target nor waiting opponent; simply an empty dojo. Kikyo walked over to the weapons closet where bow-staffs, bows, arrows and other weapons were stored. Kagome kneeled down and waited patiently for whatever it was Kikyo was looking for.
“Inuyasha, did you bring what I asked?”
“Yep, I went and got it from Totosai while you two girls were still sleeping.”
“Got what from who?” Kagome asked.
“Nevermind that for right now, Kagome.”
Kikyo pulled out her longbow and a quiver filled with arrows. Kagome recognized the long bow as Kikyo’s weapon of choice; something Kikyo had been practicing with since early childhood. Kikyo kneeled down in front of her sister and looked at the bow. Despite so many years of use, it remained as if brand-new. Kikyo surveyed the bow with a smile before setting it down vertically between Kagome and herself.
“Kagome, this is my cherished bow; once used by our late mother, grandmother and even great grandmother. A generational gift I pass down to you now.”
Kagome’s eyes widened and she shook her head.
“I…I’m not ready yet! I’ve barely practiced with the bow I’m using now!”
”You’ll have a long time to practice with this one.” Kikyo assured.
“I…”
”Just take the damn bow so we can leave.” Inuyasha huffed.
“Inuyasha…! Show some patience!” Kikyo chastised.
Kikyo picked up the bow and set it down in Kagome’s hands.
“Even I was nervous when mother gave me this very bow. When the time is right, I hope you will pass this sacred bow on to your daughter.”
Kagome nodded, overcome with awe and doing her best not to start crying. She could tell Kikyo wanted to cry a little as well, but for her sake, Kagome was grateful she didn’t. That’s when it dawned on Kagome…
“Kikyo, if I have your weapon, what are you going to use?”
Kikyo smiled and little and the cocky voice of Inuyasha rang clear through the dojo;
“What, did you think your big sister was just a master of the bow?”
Kagome wasn’t sure when Inuyasha had even left the dojo, but now he was standing with a long weapon resting against his shoulder as he leaned against the door of the dojo. He tossed the weapon at Kikyo who caught it gracefully. Kagome stared at the rod of the weapon; it had to be almost twelve feet long and that wasn’t even including the end of the weapon, which was cloaked in a long piece of brown fabric. Kikyo rest the weapon vertically across his lap and examined the weapon. Its long, red rod was thick and sturdy; made of either wood or bamboo, but Kikyo prayed it was the latter; when used correctly, bamboo could be just as hard as stone. Kikyo allowed herself a small smile; shame on her for thinking Totosai could make her any less of a fine weapon.
“Wh…what is that?”
“Only the most badass weapon made by Totosai to date…heh, aside from my Tetsusaiga, I mean.” Inuyasha smirked.
Kikyo smiled at Kagome, giving a slight roll of her eyes at her lover’s boasting. Carefully, Kikyo undid the cloak at the covering the end of the rod, revealing the enormous, curved blade protruding from what looked like the mouth of a golden dragon. Kagome just stared in awe of it.
“It’s…it’s a Naginata!”
“Not just any Naginata, Kagome-Chan…”
Kikyo stood up, testing its weight and examining it more closely.
“This is the Naginata No Tsukikage”
“The…Naginata of the Shadowed Moon?” Kagome asked, eyes wide.
“Very good. I had Inuyasha go back into his time and have Totosai-Sama re-forge this weapon for me. This is the very first weapon that belonged to our great-great ancestor, Higurashi Midoriko-Sama. The first woman to actually begin our family.”
Kagome sat there stunned, prompting a smirk from Inuyasha.
“Damn, I think you made her blow a fuse or something.”
”Inuyasha…” Kikyo sighed.
“Listen up, kiddo…”
Kagome was brought back to reality; she hated the name ‘kiddo’, because it told her that even after last night, nothing had changed; he still thought of her as a ‘child’. He looked at the Tsukikage in Kikyo’s hands.
“This blade is legendary…It was sealed away when your ancestor died. I went through hell, literally, to retrieve it from the soul collectors and had Totosai fix it up for me. It’s a legendary weapon.”
“Ah, but not as legendary as the Hikarikage.” Kikyo smiled.
“A weapon with a paradoxical name…?” Kagome muttered to herself.
“Yes. It means ‘Light Shadow’. They’re both Naginata of power; while the Tsukikage was said to have been created by the moon goddess, Kaguya-Hime, the Hikarikage was said to have been created by the goddess of the sun, Amaterasu-Sama. Yet, no one knows whatever happened to the blade.”
“What do you mean?”
”Like she said, no one has seen that blade. It’s just a myth. I don’t even know if it exists in MY time. Anyway, enough with the history lesson, don’t we have a ghost or whatever to get rid of?”
“Ah, of course.”
Kikyo stood up, followed by Kagome who grabbed the bow, making sure it was wound tightly before placing the quiver of arrows on her back. Kikyo wrapped the end of the Tsukikage in its cloth-like covering and looked at Inuyasha who was waiting for the two of them. As they left out of the Higurashi shrine, Kagome noticed that snow was beginning to melt. Kagome smiled towards the sky. Spring was nearing. As they walked through the town, people bowed to Kikyo and Kagome, once they noticed the younger sibling was by her side. Kagome simply bowed in return with a smile. As they approached the school, they could see the evacuated students standing out in the courtyard. Kagome blushed as they passed through the school of students, hearing a few comments about the ‘really hot exorcist’ or the ‘beautiful priestess’. Kagome definitely knew they were talking about Kikyo and Inuyasha. It wasn’t until she heard a boy say ‘the cute one’ that she knew she was being talked about. Before Kagome could turn to see who it was who’d said it, she realized that Kikyo had stopped.
“Kikyo, you feel it too?” Inuyasha said, standing beside her.
“Yes, a strong, evil aura surrounds this building.”
“Ah, priestess Kikyo…!”
The group turned to see a tall man dressed in dark green tracksuit. His long, black hair was pulled into a thin ponytail and Kagome blushed under his gaze; he had the prettiest green eyes Kagome had ever seen. Apparently, the rest of the student body thought so as well. A slight growl startled Kagome and she noticed Inuyasha was growling at the approaching man.
“Koga…”

“Koga…”
