Chapter Three : Dinner at the Tashio's
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kagome had left work at 5 instead of 5:30, figuring that the client problem could be held off for another day before she had to deal with it. And plus, she had a dinner date with the Western family, wither they knew who she was or not.
And by the look of Sesshoumaru the night before, they wouldn’t know.
She jumped in the shower, remembering how precise and Inu demon’s sense of smell was and quickly washed herself. She got out and dried off before putting on her favorite black lacy bra and matching panties. She blow-dried her hair and brushed it out, letting the natural curls come out. She didn’t bother with make-up, and she never had before, so she skipped that all together and brushed her teeth.
After she was finished doing that, she went into her room and rummaged through her closet. Finding a beautiful sky-blue silk dress that she hadn’t worn in some time, she smiled. It was perfect.
She put it one and looked at herself in the mirror. The sleeve fell past her hand in a flare and her left shoulder was left bare. The dress hugged her breasts and waist while it flared out at her hips to flow softly down to her knees. She twirled around to watch the silk fabric glitter and shine.
She dug through her shoe organizer trying to find the shoes she had bought with the dress. After a good ten minutes, she finally pulled them out over her head with a satisfactory ‘ah-ha!’ She threw the blue stilettos on and tied the ballet ribbons around her shin.
She pulled the matching blue purse off it’s hook and threw in the necessities: lip gloss, some face powder and some extra money just in case.
As she finished, she heard the door bell ring. She scrambled out of her room and to the door, grabbing her keys on the way. She opened the door to find Inu Yasha on the other side. His mouth fell open as he caught what she was wearing.
“You look terrific for someone who only had 15 minutes to get ready,” he complemented.
“I came home a little earlier then planed, but thanks anyway. You look nice yourself,” she replied with a small smile.
He grinned at her and held his arm out. “Shall we? I don’t think Father or brother are very patient men.”
Kagome forced herself to smile, remembering all the past times Sesshoumaru had almost left her in the dust because she was going to slow. “Let’s get going then.”
They made it to the mansion earlier then they thought it would take and found themselves in the living room while Inu Yasha spoke to his father over the intercom system. Kagome had found this a lazy way to talk to people, but it wasn’t her life style, so she wouldn’t complain about it.
Inu Yasha finished talking to his father and turned to face her. “They’ll be in here in a minute. They’re just going over a few new contracts to their companies.”
“I completely understand. Nothing new to me,” Kagome answered.
“So, about those books of yours. Are you willing to tell me about your next book? Or is that a complete surprise?” Inu Yasha asked.
“Actually, I don’t mind. You are my agent now, so you kind of have to know so you can sell it when the time comes. Kanade’s going to be going through a series of confused states because of Kyo. He’s going to show some emotion to her one minute and then completely ignore her the next, like she’s just a filthy bug under his feet. They fight demons, of course, that are trying to stop Kanade from reaching her goal and she becomes closer then she could have ever imagine. Then something happens between her and Kyo that confuses her even more then anything else has. Then it’s the end. Don’t worry though, because there’s going to be plenty of things in between.
“Small things, granted, but they all add up in the end. You’ll understand better when you finally see the last book. Everything comes together better then.”
Kagome watched as Inu Yasha nodded in understanding.
“It sounds interesting. Maybe if you could make it less vague, it might help out some.”
“I’m sorry, but being vague is my specialty. I wouldn’t want to change that, now would I?” she asked.
A tall man that could easily pass as Sesshoumaru’s and Inu Yasha’s brother walked into the room.
“Ah, hello there! You must be this Kagome everybody’s been throwing absolute fits about. I am Inu-no-Tashio, but you may call me Inu, my darling.”
Inu-no bowed to the Kagome and she blushed deeply.
“Please sir, you don’t have to bow to me. Actually, I have always admired you. Inu Yasha didn’t say that he was related to you. I would have worn something nicer then this,” Kagome shyly spoke, keeping her head bowed slightly.
Inu-no laughed. “An admirer! How rare these days. Nobody cares about old men anymore it seems. And you look lovely in that dress. It matches your eyes.”
Kagome blushed more deeply. “Thank you sir.”
“Dad, quit hitting on my client!” Inu Yasha chastised his father.
Kagome laughed. “I brought you a few signed books. I figured your brother would want one. Inu can have one too. I even brought you one too, Inu Yasha.”
She pulled out the first edition and handed one to Inu-no and Inu Yasha.
“Thank you, my dear. I will cherish this forever,” Inu-no thanked her.
Her face seemed to loose some of its cheeriness. “Be careful with the word forever, Inu. It is a very long time.”
“Indeed it is, Kagome. It is so nice to see you again.”
Sesshoumaru’s cold voice startled Kagome, almost making her jump. He walked into her line of vision and nodded his head to her.
“Hello Sesshoumaru. I’m glad the girls didn’t swamp you last night,” she replied, pulling out another book. “A little black bird told me you were a fan. I singed it for you.”
He took the book and nodded. “Thank you. I believe Jaken said dinner was being served in a minute. Kagome, if you would be able to speak to me privately after dinner. I have something I would like to discuss with you.”
Kagome nodded meekly. “Of course. Anything for a fan.”
They all moved into the dinning room and began to eat. They made small talk during the first part of it. Soon Inu-no was fidgeting in his seat and Kagome was itching to find out why.
“Inu, are you ok?” she asked.
“Actually Kagome, I’m very curious about something. If you don’t mind me asking you a question,” he asked.
“Of course not. Whatever you want to know,” Kagome answered.
“How did you gain the Northern Lands?” he asked.
Kagome sputtered and her eyes widened in surprise. She was in utter shock and disbelief. Nobody knew she was the Lady of the North.
“Excuse me?” she asked, finally gaining her voice.
“Don’t pretend not to know what I’m talking about,” Inu stated.
“Father, she’s a human. She wouldn’t know anything about the Lands!” Inu Yasha tried to cut in.
“They don’t live long anyway,” Sesshoumaru stated. “It is impossible.”
“I killed Lord Kibito after seeing what he was really doing to the villagers. Did you know he was using them as slaves? Even the demons in the Northern Lands were kept in chains. I couldn’t stand it. Then that stupid mate of his decided she was going to poison me, so I had to kill her as well.” Kagome answered, picking up her wine and sipping it.
Inu Yasha stared at her in shock while Sesshoumaru glared at her. Inu-no nodded his head wisely.
“We never did quite trust him. And do you have a mate? You have to, to be so old,” Inu-no stated.
Kagome glared at him. “I’m not old. You are old. I am still young. And no, I don’t have a mate. I had found an alternate way for staying alive for so long.”
Sesshoumaru’s eyes narrowed at her. “Who are you?”
“You should already know who I am, Prince Sesshoumaru-sama. After all, a girl from the future is a rare find, is it not?” she teased him. “Well, it’s been pleasant, but I’ve made a vow to stay away from other Lords and Ladies, so I must be on my way. Good night, and thank you. Inu Yasha, I will fax you the rough draft of the next book.”
Inu Yasha gaped at her. “What the hell is going on here!?!?” he yelled.
Kagome sighed. “Are you really that dense? You’ve read my books. You should know what’s going on here.”
Sesshoumaru growled. “You published my life wench. How dare you?”
“Your life?” Kagome asked, turning to face him. “That was my life! It was my feelings, my thoughts, and my journey! You just stumbled across it and decided you were going to play a part in my journey. Because you were ‘curious,’ and look were that lead you! An Immortal human woman in love with a stupid, self-centered, egotistical demon that can’t, or won’t, I haven’t figured which yet, get off his own damn high horse! So no, it’s not your life, and I’ll dare to do what ever I so please!”
Inu-no stared at Kagome in shock. Immortal? In love with his son? What, exactly, had happened here?
“Excuse me, but this is my house, I believe. I think we should all lower our voices and head into the living room for a long, long discussion.” He stood up and began to walk into the living room.
Inu Yasha followed, still in a daze. Sesshoumaru growled at her and followed his family. Kagome sighed and stared at the ceiling.
“Can’t anything just go my way for once? I hate you, Kami!” she whispered to herself before subjecting herself to follow.
She entered the living room to find Inu Yasha sitting on the couch, still in a baffled state. Inu-no sat in a chair to the right of him and Sesshoumaru stood next to the fire place across the room.
Kagome sat across from Inu-no, figuring that he’d be doing the talking, and she’d be doing most of the answering.
“I’m so lost,” Inu Yasha mumbled, making Kagome laugh a dry laugh.
“Not as lost as I am, I assure you Inu Yasha,” she replied, sending a glare at Sesshoumaru.
He just glared back and growled at her.
Inu-no cut in. “Excuse me here! We will have no arguing in my presence.”
Everyone focused back onto him. “Now, how did you meet my son?”
Kagome rested her elbow on the arm of the chair and her cheek on her hand. “Which one?” she asked.
“Sesshoumaru, of course?” Inu-no answered.
“Haven’t you read my book? Both your sons have. I figured you would have too,” Kagome answered.
“Well, actually, I have, but that doesn’t answer a thing.”
“But it should. You see, everything that is written in those books actually happened. All you have to do is change a few names. For example, Kanade can be changed to Kagome. Kyo can be changed to Sesshoumaru. Wa-la. Our journey written down for your amusement,” Kagome answered with a wave of her hand.
“You will stop writing this story. You have no right too,” Sesshoumaru growled.
“Yes I do. I’m not using your name. Everyone thinks it’s a fantasy. And it was my life experience. I have every right to do it. And plus, I out rank you. You can’t tell a Lady what to do when you’re still a Prince,” Kagome countered.
“Sesshoumaru, you will hold your tongue. The story has yet to be finished, so as you can see, neither Inu Yasha or I have a good vision of what happened in the end. Care to enlighten us?” Inu-no asked.
Kagome sighed. “I guess I could. Inu Yasha was going to find out one way or another, as seeing it will be the next two books in the series. Well, Sesshoumaru would be nice to me one moment and completely cold the next. I got all confused about this. It didn’t help that I was starting to feel things for him. Things got more serious on my side of the whole ordeal. I don’t know what he felt, and I really don’t care anymore.
“But then one night something happened.” She turned her eyes away from the three golden gazes and into her lap. A warning growl issued from Sesshoumaru. “Something happened that shouldn’t have. At least on his point of view. I fell hard and every time I tried to talk to him about it, he’d just up and leave me.
“Anyway, the journey continued like this for a while until we made it to our destination. I got what I was looking for and we headed back down to the bottom of the mountain together. He stayed the night there but the next day I finally told him everything. He ignored it all, telling me he had to get back to you. When I asked him what I was to do, he pretty much said he didn’t care and then left.
“I don’t know what he did after that, but I wandered the lands until I meet Kibito. Then I killed him and decided to live my life in peace. So I did.”
She ignored the three as well as she could. Sesshoumaru continued to glare at her as Inu-no glared at his oldest son. Inu Yasha’s mouth hung open.
“You did that with Mr. Ice Prick?” Inu Yasha asked in the disbelieving voice of his.
“Inu Yasha!” Inu-no scolded. “Now is not the time for that. Grow up.”
Inu-no turned to face Sesshoumaru. “You never told me of this journey. Why is that?”
“It was of no consequence. She is human,” he answered.
“A human you have done something with. You are not allowed to do that, and you know it. What are you planning to do about this?” Inu-no asked.
Sesshoumaru turned his gaze to his father, deciding that glaring at Kagome wasn’t doing anything productive. “I believe laws state I must Court her now. So I will, now that everyone knows about what has happened.”
Inu-no glared at his son. “You never planned on Courting her in the beginning?” he asked.
Kagome snorted. “Please! He just uses people for his own amusement and then leaves them. Why would he want to Court me? Even now after you all know?”
Sesshoumaru glared at her again. “You will be quiet woman. You have spoken more then enough.”
Inu-no growled and stood up. “There will be no arguing in my house! You will Court her and you will treat her kindly. Kagome, please accept him as a Courtier.”
Kagome turned her head to face Inu-no. “I don’t see why I should,” she answered.
“You would deny me?” Sesshoumaru asked, raising an eyebrow.
“I believe the saying goes something like ‘Do as others have done onto you.’ Is it not?” she asked in return.
“Indeed,” he answered.
Inu-no turned his glare onto Kagome. “Do not push me. Will you accept him or not?”
Kagome sighed. “I believe with me being a Lady, I can’t refuse a Courtier, can I?”
“No, you can’t. You can only gain more Courtiers to compete to lose his favor,” Inu-no answered.
Inu Yasha stared at the three of them like they were insane. “This is just to much to take all in in one day.”
Kagome nodded. “Yeah, you’re right. I think I should go home now. No doubt Sango’s tried to call me bitching about Wolf again.”
She stood up and grabbed her purse. “Thank you for dinner. Inu Yasha, I take it you’re going to take me home?”
“I will take you home,” Sesshoumaru said, grabbing his keys.
Kagome rolled her eyes. “Anything you say.”
Sesshoumaru lead the way and Kagome followed behind him. They exited the house and entered his Jaguar.
As they headed down the road, he could help but to remember the night they had done it. It was a warm night and she had just bathed in a nearby hot spring. Moon beams played on drops of water across her skin. He still remembered how she smelt too.
Thunderstorms and lilac. It was always his favorite smell. Probably because the fresh rain and the electricity heightened the smell of the lilacs. He didn’t care. He wanted her that night.
And after that, he didn’t seem to be satisfied with anyone else. He couldn’t figure it out either. And it frustrated him to no end.
“Why are you Courting me if you don’t want to?” Kagome broke the silence.
“It is demon law that if you share an intimacy with a person of equal standing or higher, you must Court them. Since I was a willing participant that night, I am now bound to that law,” he answered.
“But at the time I was just an Immortal human. I wasn’t a ruler or a Lady. So doesn’t that exude you?” she asked.
“Are you trying to get out of this?” he countered.
Kagome glared at him. “I’m not trying to get out of this. If I can recall correctly, you were the one that didn’t want anything to do with me in the first place. I was just something to scratch you curious spot.”
“Indeed you were. But that doesn’t mean anything now. My father found out about it while you were of higher standings. He will set the law on my head no matter how much I fight it. Or you,” he added to get it across to her.
Kagome sighed. “I see. So I’m stuck in this wither I like it or not basically?”
“Correct.”
Kagome’s cell phone rang, startling her. She quickly pulled it out of her purse to notice it was Kouga. She groaned and let her head fall back onto the neck rest while flipping the phone open.
“Hey Kouga. What’s up?” she asked.
“Hey, what are you doing tonight?” a gruff voice asked her.
“I’m going home and going to bed. It’s been a long day. Why do you ask?” She rolled her eyes, knowing he was going to ask her to go dancing with her.
“I was going to go to Shippin’s. Yura’s working there tonight and I thought you’d like to go with me. I figured you haven’t been out in a while so I’d call and ask. After all, I have to show my woman attention too,” he bragged.
“Kouga, what have I told you time and again? Plus, I was just out dancing last night with a few friends from out of town,” she lied, not wanting him to know him to know she was out by herself.
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“Because it was something I wanted to do with only them. I hadn’t seen them in a while, so it was my treat to me. That’s why,” she answered.
“Oh, well then how about I come over and we can watch a movie? Or you can come over to my place?” he tried again.
“Thanks Kouga, but I just want to go home and sleep. Why don’t you call Ayame? I think she’d like to go out with you,” she offered.
“Nah. I think I’ll stay home instead and just flip through the channels. I’ll see you tomorrow at work then.”
“Bye Kouga.” With that, she flipped her phone shut and rolled her eyes. “The guy can’t be less obvious, can he?” she mumbled to herself.
“Who is Kouga?” he asked.
“An employee. He likes to fancy we’re ‘dating.’ Stupid demon doesn’t know jack shit though, I’ll tell you that. He’s loud and obnoxious. If he’d open his eyes a little bit, he’d notice I’m not into him and Ayame is more then anyone else is,” Kagome replied.
“Hn,” was his only reply.
Kagome’s phone went off again. Flipping it open with out checking who it was, she placed it to her ear.
“Hello?” she answered.
“Hey ‘Gome. What ya doing? I tried calling the office, but you weren’t there. Then I called your place and you didn’t answer any of the twenty phone calls. Where are you?” Sango’s voice called out.
“I’m going home now. I was at my agents’ house for that dinner meeting I told you I had,” she answered.
“Ah… So did you meet his brother and was he the guy?” Sango asked.
“Can we talk tomorrow? I’m kind of tired and I just want to go home and sleep,” Kagome cut in.
There was a pause on the phone, as if Sango was judging the hidden meaning behind her words and trying to figure out if Kagome was lying or not.
“Oh. I see. Yeah, I’ll talk to you tomorrow then,” Sango answered.
“Sango! Don’t you dare talk to me like you know everything. I’ll explain everything to you tomorrow. Now stop it,” Kagome commanded and quickly said her good byes.
As she hung up, she noticed they had stopped and were now parked in front of her house. She glanced at Sesshoumaru. “Do you want to come in or something? I mean with you Courting me in this era, it pretty much means we’re boyfriend/girlfriend. We might as well act like it while we’re stuck like this.”
Sesshoumaru smirked. “Of course. You can show me the grand tour too.”
Kagome had finished the tour of the house and they sat in her living room. He drank a glass of green tea while she opted for hot cocoa with extra sugar in it. They had hardly spoken a word to each other since the tour had finished.
Sesshoumaru sat and kept a steady gaze on Kagome. She had found her drink quite interesting so she kept her gaze on it. After a few minutes of the silence pouring into her empty mind, she couldn’t take it anymore and decided that it was better to start a conversation with him.
“So what have you been doing since you left me?” she asked him.
“Working with father. He’s been setting things up so that he can step down from Lord and let me take over. I also have my own company,” he added.
“What company is that?” she asked, taking a sip of her cocoa.
“Slashers & Co. We specialize in software for computers, game stations, and even the military,” he answered.
“We order our software from there. Did you know we use it in the latest hospital technology?” she asked. “It works the best for our purposes for right now. We are trying to get into more advanced areas, and we’ve tried your product. It doesn’t seem to work well with our new products.”
“Indeed. I had always wondered why Prevail Operations ordered from us. Now that I know, I could start having people programming software for you right away,” he offered.
“Thank you. I’ll have my vice-president draw up a contract for us. We can talk later about a date for the signing.”
An aquward silence fell over them before Kagome leaned back in her chair and chuckled.
“You know, it’s kind of sad that we can’t have a normal conversation if we’re not glaring at each other or wishing for the other’s death to happen.”
“Indeed. Maybe we should just start all over?” Sesshoumaru joked with a slight smirk.
Kagome would have fallen flat on her ass if she was standing as an idea hit her hard. Her eyes widened slightly, alerting Sesshoumaru of her brain-storm and he quickly prepared himself for what was about to come.
“I think that’s the first intelligent thing you’ve said all day! Why don’t we just start all over?” she asked. “We can just pretend nothing ever happened between us all that time ago and just start anew!”
Sesshoumaru just stared at the woman as if she had grown a second head right in front of him. Start anew? With their history, especially with how old and long it was? How was that going to happen?
“Excuse me?” he asked.
“Everyone does it. Can’t you at least try it? It might just make things a little easier on us after all. And we need that the most right now,” she retorted.
Sesshoumaru wanted to sigh. He had almost forgotten how annoying this woman really was. He was also starting to question those feelings he had held all those years ago. Really! How could anyone like someone that thinks if you ‘get off on the wrong foot’ can just start all over again?
“It will not work. You can not ignore what has happened between us all those years ago. It will always be like that. No matter what you do.”
“Well, yeah, but it will be different this time. We’ll still have that, but we’re going to start over, like we’ve never meet before. I’m not saying we have to forget what happened. I’m just saying that we’re going to not let it get in the way of the here and now,” Kagome answered.
Sesshoumaru nodded. “Indeed. I believe we can do this then.”
Kagome smiled and stuck her hand out to Sesshoumaru. “Name’s Kagome Higurashi. Nice to meet you.”
Sesshoumaru engulfed her hand in his and smirked. “Sesshoumaru Tashio. The pleasure is mine.” With that, he gave a quick tug, pulling her into his lap. “And you are now my girlfriend.”
Kagome chuckled. “Well then boyfriend of mine, I think you should go home and get some sleep. I have work in the morning.”
“Indeed. Care to take lunch with me tomorrow?” he asked, standing the both of them up.
“Where and when?” she asked him.
“I’ll come by your office. How about that?” he asked.
“Alright. I’ll let my secretary know when I go in tomorrow.”
He gave her a kiss on the cheek and said good night before leaving. She was in what felt like heaven while she walked dazedly to her room to go to sleep.
She pulled out the first edition and handed one to Inu-no and Inu Yasha.
“Thank you, my dear. I will cherish this forever,” Inu-no thanked her.
Her face seemed to loose some of its cheeriness. “Be careful with the word forever, Inu. It is a very long time.”
“Indeed it is, Kagome. It is so nice to see you again.”
Sesshoumaru’s cold voice startled Kagome, almost making her jump. He walked into her line of vision and nodded his head to her.
“Hello Sesshoumaru. I’m glad the girls didn’t swamp you last night,” she replied, pulling out another book. “A little black bird told me you were a fan. I singed it for you.”
He took the book and nodded. “Thank you. I believe Jaken said dinner was being served in a minute. Kagome, if you would be able to speak to me privately after dinner. I have something I would like to discuss with you.”
Kagome nodded meekly. “Of course. Anything for a fan.”
They all moved into the dinning room and began to eat. They made small talk during the first part of it. Soon Inu-no was fidgeting in his seat and Kagome was itching to find out why.
“Inu, are you ok?” she asked.
“Actually Kagome, I’m very curious about something. If you don’t mind me asking you a question,” he asked.
“Of course not. Whatever you want to know,” Kagome answered.
“How did you gain the Northern Lands?” he asked.
Kagome sputtered and her eyes widened in surprise. She was in utter shock and disbelief. Nobody knew she was the Lady of the North.
“Excuse me?” she asked, finally gaining her voice.
“Don’t pretend not to know what I’m talking about,” Inu stated.
“Father, she’s a human. She wouldn’t know anything about the Lands!” Inu Yasha tried to cut in.
“They don’t live long anyway,” Sesshoumaru stated. “It is impossible.”
“I killed Lord Kibito after seeing what he was really doing to the villagers. Did you know he was using them as slaves? Even the demons in the Northern Lands were kept in chains. I couldn’t stand it. Then that stupid mate of his decided she was going to poison me, so I had to kill her as well.” Kagome answered, picking up her wine and sipping it.
Inu Yasha stared at her in shock while Sesshoumaru glared at her. Inu-no nodded his head wisely.
“We never did quite trust him. And do you have a mate? You have to, to be so old,” Inu-no stated.
Kagome glared at him. “I’m not old. You are old. I am still young. And no, I don’t have a mate. I had found an alternate way for staying alive for so long.”
Sesshoumaru’s eyes narrowed at her. “Who are you?”
“You should already know who I am, Prince Sesshoumaru-sama. After all, a girl from the future is a rare find, is it not?” she teased him. “Well, it’s been pleasant, but I’ve made a vow to stay away from other Lords and Ladies, so I must be on my way. Good night, and thank you. Inu Yasha, I will fax you the rough draft of the next book.”
Inu Yasha gaped at her. “What the hell is going on here!?!?” he yelled.
Kagome sighed. “Are you really that dense? You’ve read my books. You should know what’s going on here.”
Sesshoumaru growled. “You published my life wench. How dare you?”
“Your life?” Kagome asked, turning to face him. “That was my life! It was my feelings, my thoughts, and my journey! You just stumbled across it and decided you were going to play a part in my journey. Because you were ‘curious,’ and look were that lead you! An Immortal human woman in love with a stupid, self-centered, egotistical demon that can’t, or won’t, I haven’t figured which yet, get off his own damn high horse! So no, it’s not your life, and I’ll dare to do what ever I so please!”
Inu-no stared at Kagome in shock. Immortal? In love with his son? What, exactly, had happened here?
“Excuse me, but this is my house, I believe. I think we should all lower our voices and head into the living room for a long, long discussion.” He stood up and began to walk into the living room.
Inu Yasha followed, still in a daze. Sesshoumaru growled at her and followed his family. Kagome sighed and stared at the ceiling.
“Can’t anything just go my way for once? I hate you, Kami!” she whispered to herself before subjecting herself to follow.
She entered the living room to find Inu Yasha sitting on the couch, still in a baffled state. Inu-no sat in a chair to the right of him and Sesshoumaru stood next to the fire place across the room.
Kagome sat across from Inu-no, figuring that he’d be doing the talking, and she’d be doing most of the answering.
“I’m so lost,” Inu Yasha mumbled, making Kagome laugh a dry laugh.
“Not as lost as I am, I assure you Inu Yasha,” she replied, sending a glare at Sesshoumaru.
He just glared back and growled at her.
Inu-no cut in. “Excuse me here! We will have no arguing in my presence.”
Everyone focused back onto him. “Now, how did you meet my son?”
Kagome rested her elbow on the arm of the chair and her cheek on her hand. “Which one?” she asked.
“Sesshoumaru, of course?” Inu-no answered.
“Haven’t you read my book? Both your sons have. I figured you would have too,” Kagome answered.
“Well, actually, I have, but that doesn’t answer a thing.”
“But it should. You see, everything that is written in those books actually happened. All you have to do is change a few names. For example, Kanade can be changed to Kagome. Kyo can be changed to Sesshoumaru. Wa-la. Our journey written down for your amusement,” Kagome answered with a wave of her hand.
“You will stop writing this story. You have no right too,” Sesshoumaru growled.
“Yes I do. I’m not using your name. Everyone thinks it’s a fantasy. And it was my life experience. I have every right to do it. And plus, I out rank you. You can’t tell a Lady what to do when you’re still a Prince,” Kagome countered.
“Sesshoumaru, you will hold your tongue. The story has yet to be finished, so as you can see, neither Inu Yasha or I have a good vision of what happened in the end. Care to enlighten us?” Inu-no asked.
Kagome sighed. “I guess I could. Inu Yasha was going to find out one way or another, as seeing it will be the next two books in the series. Well, Sesshoumaru would be nice to me one moment and completely cold the next. I got all confused about this. It didn’t help that I was starting to feel things for him. Things got more serious on my side of the whole ordeal. I don’t know what he felt, and I really don’t care anymore.
“But then one night something happened.” She turned her eyes away from the three golden gazes and into her lap. A warning growl issued from Sesshoumaru. “Something happened that shouldn’t have. At least on his point of view. I fell hard and every time I tried to talk to him about it, he’d just up and leave me.
“Anyway, the journey continued like this for a while until we made it to our destination. I got what I was looking for and we headed back down to the bottom of the mountain together. He stayed the night there but the next day I finally told him everything. He ignored it all, telling me he had to get back to you. When I asked him what I was to do, he pretty much said he didn’t care and then left.
“I don’t know what he did after that, but I wandered the lands until I meet Kibito. Then I killed him and decided to live my life in peace. So I did.”
She ignored the three as well as she could. Sesshoumaru continued to glare at her as Inu-no glared at his oldest son. Inu Yasha’s mouth hung open.
“You did that with Mr. Ice Prick?” Inu Yasha asked in the disbelieving voice of his.
“Inu Yasha!” Inu-no scolded. “Now is not the time for that. Grow up.”
Inu-no turned to face Sesshoumaru. “You never told me of this journey. Why is that?”
“It was of no consequence. She is human,” he answered.
“A human you have done something with. You are not allowed to do that, and you know it. What are you planning to do about this?” Inu-no asked.
Sesshoumaru turned his gaze to his father, deciding that glaring at Kagome wasn’t doing anything productive. “I believe laws state I must Court her now. So I will, now that everyone knows about what has happened.”
Inu-no glared at his son. “You never planned on Courting her in the beginning?” he asked.
Kagome snorted. “Please! He just uses people for his own amusement and then leaves them. Why would he want to Court me? Even now after you all know?”
Sesshoumaru glared at her again. “You will be quiet woman. You have spoken more then enough.”
Inu-no growled and stood up. “There will be no arguing in my house! You will Court her and you will treat her kindly. Kagome, please accept him as a Courtier.”
Kagome turned her head to face Inu-no. “I don’t see why I should,” she answered.
“You would deny me?” Sesshoumaru asked, raising an eyebrow.
“I believe the saying goes something like ‘Do as others have done onto you.’ Is it not?” she asked in return.
“Indeed,” he answered.
Inu-no turned his glare onto Kagome. “Do not push me. Will you accept him or not?”
Kagome sighed. “I believe with me being a Lady, I can’t refuse a Courtier, can I?”
“No, you can’t. You can only gain more Courtiers to compete to lose his favor,” Inu-no answered.
Inu Yasha stared at the three of them like they were insane. “This is just to much to take all in in one day.”
Kagome nodded. “Yeah, you’re right. I think I should go home now. No doubt Sango’s tried to call me bitching about Wolf again.”
She stood up and grabbed her purse. “Thank you for dinner. Inu Yasha, I take it you’re going to take me home?”
“I will take you home,” Sesshoumaru said, grabbing his keys.
Kagome rolled her eyes. “Anything you say.”
Sesshoumaru lead the way and Kagome followed behind him. They exited the house and entered his Jaguar.
As they headed down the road, he could help but to remember the night they had done it. It was a warm night and she had just bathed in a nearby hot spring. Moon beams played on drops of water across her skin. He still remembered how she smelt too.
Thunderstorms and lilac. It was always his favorite smell. Probably because the fresh rain and the electricity heightened the smell of the lilacs. He didn’t care. He wanted her that night.
And after that, he didn’t seem to be satisfied with anyone else. He couldn’t figure it out either. And it frustrated him to no end.
“Why are you Courting me if you don’t want to?” Kagome broke the silence.
“It is demon law that if you share an intimacy with a person of equal standing or higher, you must Court them. Since I was a willing participant that night, I am now bound to that law,” he answered.
“But at the time I was just an Immortal human. I wasn’t a ruler or a Lady. So doesn’t that exude you?” she asked.
“Are you trying to get out of this?” he countered.
Kagome glared at him. “I’m not trying to get out of this. If I can recall correctly, you were the one that didn’t want anything to do with me in the first place. I was just something to scratch you curious spot.”
“Indeed you were. But that doesn’t mean anything now. My father found out about it while you were of higher standings. He will set the law on my head no matter how much I fight it. Or you,” he added to get it across to her.
Kagome sighed. “I see. So I’m stuck in this wither I like it or not basically?”
“Correct.”
Kagome’s cell phone rang, startling her. She quickly pulled it out of her purse to notice it was Kouga. She groaned and let her head fall back onto the neck rest while flipping the phone open.
“Hey Kouga. What’s up?” she asked.
“Hey, what are you doing tonight?” a gruff voice asked her.
“I’m going home and going to bed. It’s been a long day. Why do you ask?” She rolled her eyes, knowing he was going to ask her to go dancing with her.
“I was going to go to Shippin’s. Yura’s working there tonight and I thought you’d like to go with me. I figured you haven’t been out in a while so I’d call and ask. After all, I have to show my woman attention too,” he bragged.
“Kouga, what have I told you time and again? Plus, I was just out dancing last night with a few friends from out of town,” she lied, not wanting him to know him to know she was out by herself.
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“Because it was something I wanted to do with only them. I hadn’t seen them in a while, so it was my treat to me. That’s why,” she answered.
“Oh, well then how about I come over and we can watch a movie? Or you can come over to my place?” he tried again.
“Thanks Kouga, but I just want to go home and sleep. Why don’t you call Ayame? I think she’d like to go out with you,” she offered.
“Nah. I think I’ll stay home instead and just flip through the channels. I’ll see you tomorrow at work then.”
“Bye Kouga.” With that, she flipped her phone shut and rolled her eyes. “The guy can’t be less obvious, can he?” she mumbled to herself.
“Who is Kouga?” he asked.
“An employee. He likes to fancy we’re ‘dating.’ Stupid demon doesn’t know jack shit though, I’ll tell you that. He’s loud and obnoxious. If he’d open his eyes a little bit, he’d notice I’m not into him and Ayame is more then anyone else is,” Kagome replied.
“Hn,” was his only reply.
Kagome’s phone went off again. Flipping it open with out checking who it was, she placed it to her ear.
“Hello?” she answered.
“Hey ‘Gome. What ya doing? I tried calling the office, but you weren’t there. Then I called your place and you didn’t answer any of the twenty phone calls. Where are you?” Sango’s voice called out.
“I’m going home now. I was at my agents’ house for that dinner meeting I told you I had,” she answered.
“Ah… So did you meet his brother and was he the guy?” Sango asked.
“Can we talk tomorrow? I’m kind of tired and I just want to go home and sleep,” Kagome cut in.
There was a pause on the phone, as if Sango was judging the hidden meaning behind her words and trying to figure out if Kagome was lying or not.
“Oh. I see. Yeah, I’ll talk to you tomorrow then,” Sango answered.
“Sango! Don’t you dare talk to me like you know everything. I’ll explain everything to you tomorrow. Now stop it,” Kagome commanded and quickly said her good byes.
As she hung up, she noticed they had stopped and were now parked in front of her house. She glanced at Sesshoumaru. “Do you want to come in or something? I mean with you Courting me in this era, it pretty much means we’re boyfriend/girlfriend. We might as well act like it while we’re stuck like this.”
Sesshoumaru smirked. “Of course. You can show me the grand tour too.”
Kagome had finished the tour of the house and they sat in her living room. He drank a glass of green tea while she opted for hot cocoa with extra sugar in it. They had hardly spoken a word to each other since the tour had finished.
Sesshoumaru sat and kept a steady gaze on Kagome. She had found her drink quite interesting so she kept her gaze on it. After a few minutes of the silence pouring into her empty mind, she couldn’t take it anymore and decided that it was better to start a conversation with him.
“So what have you been doing since you left me?” she asked him.
“Working with father. He’s been setting things up so that he can step down from Lord and let me take over. I also have my own company,” he added.
“What company is that?” she asked, taking a sip of her cocoa.
“Slashers & Co. We specialize in software for computers, game stations, and even the military,” he answered.
“We order our software from there. Did you know we use it in the latest hospital technology?” she asked. “It works the best for our purposes for right now. We are trying to get into more advanced areas, and we’ve tried your product. It doesn’t seem to work well with our new products.”
“Indeed. I had always wondered why Prevail Operations ordered from us. Now that I know, I could start having people programming software for you right away,” he offered.
“Thank you. I’ll have my vice-president draw up a contract for us. We can talk later about a date for the signing.”
An aquward silence fell over them before Kagome leaned back in her chair and chuckled.
“You know, it’s kind of sad that we can’t have a normal conversation if we’re not glaring at each other or wishing for the other’s death to happen.”
“Indeed. Maybe we should just start all over?” Sesshoumaru joked with a slight smirk.
Kagome would have fallen flat on her ass if she was standing as an idea hit her hard. Her eyes widened slightly, alerting Sesshoumaru of her brain-storm and he quickly prepared himself for what was about to come.
“I think that’s the first intelligent thing you’ve said all day! Why don’t we just start all over?” she asked. “We can just pretend nothing ever happened between us all that time ago and just start anew!”
Sesshoumaru just stared at the woman as if she had grown a second head right in front of him. Start anew? With their history, especially with how old and long it was? How was that going to happen?
“Excuse me?” he asked.
“Everyone does it. Can’t you at least try it? It might just make things a little easier on us after all. And we need that the most right now,” she retorted.
Sesshoumaru wanted to sigh. He had almost forgotten how annoying this woman really was. He was also starting to question those feelings he had held all those years ago. Really! How could anyone like someone that thinks if you ‘get off on the wrong foot’ can just start all over again?
“It will not work. You can not ignore what has happened between us all those years ago. It will always be like that. No matter what you do.”
“Well, yeah, but it will be different this time. We’ll still have that, but we’re going to start over, like we’ve never meet before. I’m not saying we have to forget what happened. I’m just saying that we’re going to not let it get in the way of the here and now,” Kagome answered.
Sesshoumaru nodded. “Indeed. I believe we can do this then.”
Kagome smiled and stuck her hand out to Sesshoumaru. “Name’s Kagome Higurashi. Nice to meet you.”
Sesshoumaru engulfed her hand in his and smirked. “Sesshoumaru Tashio. The pleasure is mine.” With that, he gave a quick tug, pulling her into his lap. “And you are now my girlfriend.”
Kagome chuckled. “Well then boyfriend of mine, I think you should go home and get some sleep. I have work in the morning.”
“Indeed. Care to take lunch with me tomorrow?” he asked, standing the both of them up.
“Where and when?” she asked him.
“I’ll come by your office. How about that?” he asked.
“Alright. I’ll let my secretary know when I go in tomorrow.”
He gave her a kiss on the cheek and said good night before leaving. She was in what felt like heaven while she walked dazedly to her room to go to sleep.
