chap 3
They left an hour later and came to the town after noon. Sam and Sango giggled when they saw all the wonderful things. Sam took Inu’s hand and guided him to some game stands and pointed to a necklace.
“Three tries,” she said taking the balls.
When she missed he moved her aside and threw the balls. When he hit all the marks she hugged him and kissed him on the cheek as the man handed her the necklace.
“Thank you,” she said before she moved to another table.
Throughout the afternoon she could feel him loosening up. He began to laugh making her heart beat wildly. Just before they went to find an inn she slipped away to look at a merchants wares. She ran her hands over a silk white shirt and hakama.
“How much?” she asked.
She gave the merchant the money and wrapped them in a paper. She was walking back when she heard him calling her name.
“There you are. Where did you go?” he said taking her hand and guiding her to a room. “They only had two rooms. I hope you don’t mind sharing.”
“I don’t mind,” she said setting down the clothes. “Here, I got you something. I thought of you when I saw them.”
When he opened the clothes his eyes went wide. He looked at her confused and she smiled.
“What? Hasn’t anyone ever bought you anything?” she giggled.
“I am a hanyou. No one has ever been nice except my mother,” he said softly.
“Well now I did,” she chuckled. “Get changed and we can go eat. My treat.”
Sam stood on the porch watching the stars as he changed. She heard the door slide open and close. When she turned her mouth dropped open. Standing in front of her haloed by the moon was a very handsome Inuyasha. She cleared her throat and smiled when he frowned.
“You look great. Let’s go eat,” she said dragging him away.
They ate in friendly silence in the open air. Musicians played while people danced around them. Inuyasha watched Sam curiously as she ate slowly, her eyes dancing with the moonlight. When she smiled at him he felt his heart speed up and turned away.
Dammit, what is happening to me. I love Kikyo. Don’t I? He thought when he heard her giggle.
“I would love to dance,” she said to a handsome man who asked.
He watched, fuming as she danced in another man’s arms. He realized he was truly jealous and stood. He walked over to them and asked to dance. The man bowed and walked away. Sam looked at him and he put his hands on her waist and they began to dance slowly.
“You stay away from the men,” he said.
“What? Why?” she said confused.
“Because I said so,” he growled, frowning when she turned angry.
“Because you say so? Who do you think you are?” she said pushing away and walking off.
She walked quickly away knowing he followed. He could tell he had angered her a lot and walked beside her. She pulled the comb from her hair as they walked and sighed. She knew the only reason he got to her was because she was starting to like him, and she couldn’t let that happen. She knew he loved someone else and she wouldn’t be a third wheel.
“Hey Inu, I think I will go sleep outside. I am getting used to it,” she said as they returned and she grabbed her sleeping bag.
Without waiting for a reply she left and set up the bag under the stars. She was glad for the warm breeze of the summer as she sat looking at the stars. So much for having fun she thought as she settled down to sleep.
She woke the following morning with something heavy beside her. She opened her eyes to find Inuyasha asleep sitting beside her. She sighed and went to scratch her head when she felt the necklace on her hand.
I forgot about this she thought.
She looked at the pendent of the little carved dog and girl. She suddenly realized he might take it the wrong way and stuck it around her neck. She hid it in her neckline when she felt him begin to stir. She moved her leg and almost gasped when a pain shot up through her leg.
“It must not be healed yet,” she whispered as she rubbed it.
“Well hello there young lady. I hope you and your lad enjoyed the festival,” said an old woman winking and handing her a wreath shaped like a heart. “This is for luck to your future.”
“Uh no miss, we aren’t, umm,” she stuttered as the woman walked away. “Damn.”
“Where did you get that?” said Inuyasha when he saw the wreath in her hands.
“That old woman thought we were a couple and gave it to me,” she said laughing. “As if we could be a couple.”
He flinched at the harsh tone in her voice and frowned. He grabbed her hand as she stood and turned her to look at her.
“Why is it so hard to believe we would be together? Is it because a hanyou is too beneath you?” he growled to her face before he hurried off.
“Inuyasha,” she shouted to no avail. “Dammit, now I have to go find him. Wait maybe I should let him think that. No I can’t let him think I hate him for what he is.”
She walked off in the direction he did, looking into shops and other places. Than she felt his aura and followed it to a lake where he sat brooding. She sat beside him sensing his pain.
“What do you want wench?” he snapped.
“First off again I am not a wench,” she said back. “And I don’t care if your hanyou or even a pig.”
“Than why wouldn’t we work?” he said, turning to look at her.
“Well because there is Kikyo,” she said softly. “And I would never want to come between two people. I have had that happen to me and I swore I would never do that. So now can we be friend’s?”
“You don’t care if I am hanyou? You just want to be friend’s?” he said.
“Yes, and Inu, you are welcome to see Kikyo any time. You don’t need to explain anything to any of us,” she said scratching his ear.
She heard him say keh and she giggled. She hugged him before she turned to walk back to their room. As she dressed she touched the necklace she wore, knowing it would always remind her of him. She suddenly lifted her head and took off, rushing past Shippou.
“Hey Shippou did you see where Sam went?” asked Inuyasha as he came up.
“Ya she just ran off that way. I think something’s wrong,” said the little fox.
“Three tries,” she said taking the balls.
