Chapter 3
The next morning Kagome woke slowly to the murmurings of her friends. Groaning as she stretched, she crawled out of her sleeping bag. As she placed her mobile bedding into her backpack she pulled out a pair of pants and a fresh shirt. Chirping a cheery hello to everyone she head down to the springs to freshen up for the day.
Taking advantage of Kagome’s morning rituals Miroku snagged Shippo into his arms. “Shippo, I need to know everything that you can remember about the forest Sprites. You said that you could hear them last night before you went to sleep.”
“Don’t you know about the sprites? I thought everyone knew about them.” Shippo looked up in confusion.
“Shippo, we have always been taught to beware of the sprites. But I get the feeling that you were taught different.” Sango spoke softly by Miroku’s side, so as to not startle the young kit.
“Bah you won’t get much out of him. He’s too young to know much. Anyways it’s, too little, too late. They already got to Kagome. I can smell the difference.” Inuyasha spoke from his perch in the trees, staring off into the distance.
“What do you mean Inuyasha? It’s too late for what?” Sango walked over to stand at the base of the tree.
Sighing, Inuyasha closed his eyes. “I mean that there is nothing we can do. If there is one thing I learned my whole lifetime it is that the Sprites will have their way. The Sprites are the oldest magic, outside of the gods, some would almost venture that they were along side the gods when they dwelled here. That is why humans instinctively sit by a fire. That is why even demons try to stay out of the way of them. There are only a few demons who might even have a chance to fight against them.” His fist curled tighter until a few drops of his blood oozed from between his fingers.
“That’s right, there is nothing you can’t do about it. You might carry the blood of our father, InuTachio, but you also have the blood of your mother in you. You have not near the strength to even consider yourself in the running.” Sessoumaru stepped into the clearing. His icy eyes marked the spot of everyone in sight.
“My Lord Sesshoumaru, welcome.” Miroku bowed his head to the tall dog demon. “If I may ask you to please explain more.” He whispered out of the side of his mouth at Sango, “Inuyasha isn’t even growling at the sight of his brother. Most peculiar.”
Breathing deeply the air Sesshoumaru turned to watch the path to the springs. “There is nothing he can do. He is not strong enough. I never thought that this day would come let alone that it will be Her.”
“Her?”
“Kagome, I believe you knew her as.” Sesshoumaru watched the figure approaching them from upwind.
Kagome stepped back into the clearing. Stopping she hissed, “Male.” Acting on an instinct she leapt into the trees. Surprising her. She could feel something inside of her take control of her mind. Whispering in her mind that all males must prove themselves worthy. Only the best may dare approach her inner circle. ‘What in the world?’ Kagome muttered to herself.
“Female.” The voice drew her complete attention away from herself.
Kagome peered down at the group gathered below her. At her startled friends, the seething Inuyasha, her curious kit. The new male she already knew, but now, instinctively, threatened her in a way she never ever would have dared to think. The inner voice screamed a warning. Telling her that she must conquer him or he would tame her. Kagome crouched, her muscles tense. Her mind quickly gathering and discarding options.
“Oh, wow! Kagome is the Sprites’ Princess. I can remember my father telling me about the…um. “ Looking at Kagome then at Lord Sesshoumaru, the most powerful demon alive. A worried look crossed Shippo face. Daring to take his life in his hands he leaped down from Miroku’s arms.
“Lord Sesshoumaru?” Bowing in front of the demon he tried to intercede. “Kagome doesn’t know the stories. My Lord, if I may have time to tell her all that my father..ulp!” Shippo ran back to hide behind the monk. When Sesshoumaru eyes flared red.
“She has all she needs to know at this time. The rest will come in time.”
At his brother’s cold statement Inuyasha quickly gestured to the monk and slayer to step back away from between the still figures.
They could see Kagome narrow her eyes when the demon started growling low in his throat. In a flash they were gone, only the trees whipped in sign of their passing.
Inuyasha breathed out a sigh then shattered a young tree with his fists. He knew that there was nothing he could do. The sprites would spite him if he had even tried. They had been watching since last night when he arrived at the springs. But deep, deep, down inside he was relieved. This way he didn’t have to make a choice between the memory of Kikyo and the reality of Kagome. But oh how he had hoped to eventually find contentment with her. But he never even had a chance with this new Kagome.
Feeling the stares of Sango and Miruko he closed his eyes. “Only a powerful demon will be able to mate with a Sprites’ Princess. Only a powerful demon can help her to successfully finish her transformation from human to royal sprite. Only a Powerful demon can control the instinctive urges that hang in the grasp of Kagome.” Sighing deeply he looked at his startled friends. “There is nothing that I can do about this. Let us return to the village.”
Shippo walked up to place his hand on Inuyasha’s knee. An understanding was shared between them. Turning from the demon he climbed to Miroku’s shoulder. “Well see you in the village at Lady Keade, Inuyasha.”
The half demon ran into the forest chased by his personal demons. Heading in the opposite direction that his brother had gone. Those left behind climbed on the back of the transformed Kilala. Wondering how they were going to explain this to the old miko.
(A/N) yes I know I made Inuyasha sound more passive. But you got to realize that Naraku is dead as is Kikyo. Remember I have already mentioned this in the past two chapters and that Inuyasha sat on a hill thinking of his past. To me thinking means growing. In more ways than one. Thank you for the reviews. They are very exciting to receive and very encouraging to the contination the story. I would also like to mention this: Sesshoumaru never mated Kagome in the first chapter. He marked her yes, mated her no. If you don’t believe me please read chapter 1 again. I checked to make sure of that myself. Thanks again for the reviews. And please if you have any questions or notice that I didn’t explain something well enough please mention it to me. See you in the next chapter.
