Returning From the Past
A week had passed between Kagome returning to her time and nearly two from her discovering the rumored existence of the jewel of elements. Even more so that a single family line had been chosen for the caring of it.
According to Inuyasha there were four elements locked within the jewel, and one trapped within the chosen being. The question was. What exactly was that fifth element. The others could be accounted for, air, water, earth, and fire. But that fifth remained an evasive creature.
Not only that but how exactly was she and her friends supposed to find a jewel that died with it’s owner? She shook her head and returned her attention to her arithmetic book. She’d returned for the next two weeks to finish tests as the first semester was coming to a close and she had every plan to graduate in the spring.
She’d been fast to discover the season change fast between her time and the past. It seemed as though there was a polar opposite change. Something she was secretly happy for. She always a got to enjoy the best months of the year. Even if it was twice a year. Aside from the winters, everything was nice.
There was a knock at the door to her room causing her to start and close her book. “Come in.” She called as she placed away the book. Homework was just not going to get done tonight.
The door opened slowly followed by her mother. “Mama! What brings you to my room?” SHe asked turning in her seat to face the older woman. Her shorter dark hair accented by the silver threads catching in the setting sunlight.
Yukino seated herself at the end of her daughters bed and turned to face the energetic teen. “Well hunny, I’ve come to ask you something.” She said folding her hands in her lap with a smile on her face.
“Shoot.” the girl said without pretense.
Yukino smiled brightly at the positive attitude. “Well about a week ago, before you came back from your adventure, I received a letter from the government.” She began, her excitement showing. “And they want to know if we’d like to take in the american exchange student.” She finished near to bouncing.
Kagome’s mouth hung open. Fairly surprised by what she’d just heard. Of all the things to have been asked. She honestly didn’t see that as one of them.
“Well? What do you think?” Her mother asked her head cocked off to the side. “Do you think you might be able to stick around here for a bit to show her around?” She asked.
Kagome could see the excitement rolling off of her mother in waves and couldn’t say no. “Why not Mama? I mean it’d be a great way to keep you company while I’m away for so long.” She shrugged.
Yukino nodded. “Not only that, but if you would rather, the girl is up for adoption, and if we decide that we really like her in the end we could adopt her.” She added nearly biting her nails in her excitement.
“Adopt?” Kagome asked wide eyed. “Well sure, I mean, if she doesn’t have any other family, that would be a nice thing to do for her.” She added nodding to show her approval. “When do you think she’ll be here?” She asked then.
Her mothers cheeks reddened. “Well you see, that’s just it. I kinda already invited her to come here.” She said with an embarrassed smile.
“Oh.” Kagome said a little surprised.
“Well, I didn’t know when you’d be back and I wanted to make sure she had a home before second semester began.” She added. “But I really did want to wait and ask if you were interested in perhaps adopting to her before the year was out ad she had to return to America.” She finished, still looking sheepish. “She should be sometime tomorrow.”
Kagome shrugged and smiled, her surprise showing. “Well that’s awesome.” Her mother nodded standing.
“You should get some shut eye. I expect an early morning start.” She pressed a kiss to her daughters forehead and headed out the door.
Kagome stood in the middle of her room the last rays of sunlight disappearing as she breathed out a sigh. ‘One more adventure to embark on.’ She changed for bed and was out like a light as soon as her head hit the pillow.
