“May the spirits guide you well on your way...”
The golden eyes were moist with un-shed tears again, as so often during these past few nightmarish hours. He felt as if he hadn't had a proper chance to understand, to grasp the reality.
Miroku was gone. Dead.
And he let the tears come, let them fall down his already tear streaked cheeks, let the shudders rake his body, let out the howl of misery. His lover was gone and nothing would ever bring him back.
“May they keep you safe... Like I couldn't... I love you...”
He had to turn away as the dirt began to fall. He could not withstand to see his lovers face as the earth fell over to cover it. His insides were being ripped to pieces. His heart shattering, never to be whole again.
Broken and shattered for all eternity.
Later, still standing by the burial mound, he tried to remember the last kiss they'd shared, just before the ill fated battle. Before that terrible fate that had befallen his raven.
The kiss had been quick, brief but not cursory. Like their love had turned out to have been. And that would have to last him a lifetime.
