Chapter 3
Scouting

Naraku had arrived back at the Kaede’s destroyed hut. He could smell the lingering scent of that fine ripe mead, as it mingled with the smell of blood. Together the two, enticed his nose. Leading his horse through the lingering smell, he trailed her scent, like a dog hunting for a fox. He stopped when his nose caught another scent--the scent of a pine forest. He growled, “InuYasha!” Whipping the reins of his horse harshly, he retreated towards his palace, growling and cursing the whole way. “Damn you InuYasha! I will have her, and your kingdom! I will enjoy bringing death to you and your brother!”

Sango and Miroku scouted the area of the Prince’s kingdom. It was a quiet night, like most nights.

“Are you ready to head back?” Sango asked, looking at the young man before her. His brown eyes were like a magnet to her; she could not help but stare lustfully into his. She remembered the first time they met, and his lecherous ways. Constantly groping her, or asking her to bare his children. She giggled at the memory. She stopped her mirth when he caught her eye. Looking away shyly, she could not look away for long. She wanted him more than ever; he grew on her and she began falling in love with him.

Every night was the same, scouting then returning to the palace, only awaiting her lover’s touch? She anticipated the much thought, hoping that they would return soon.

“Yes my love I do believe it is a quiet night. However, let’s just check the next village. Then we can return,” he suggested looking into her hazel eyes. She looked like a goddess before him; the moonlight glistened from her long brown hair. Her black attire was very eye catching, with brass studded leather short dress with a dagged overskirt only to hug her frame snuggly, leaving nothing to the imagination. Even though she wore a black cape, he knew what was underneath. He did not care, and could not complain, her scrumptious body was his and only his and he would see to it later this morning. He imagined his hands running over her voluptuous breasts, her firm tummy and loving the feel of her tightened folds of her sheath. He adjusted himself in the saddle just at the thought of his huntress.

The two rode into the silent night. When they finally had given up that no trouble brewed, until they heard pounding of hoof beats approaching them quickly.

They paused, each giving a silent glance, swords drew ready to defend themselves if need be. Retreating into the depths of the trees, they watched the lone rider pass them; his long ebony hair danced in the wind as he pounded harder on his horse. Miroku glanced at Sango, with equal agreement, they recognized the rider, and it was no other than Lord Naraku. After he passed the two gave chase.

Naraku, noticed other riders approaching him at an alarming speed. Glancing over his shoulder to see who dare intrude on him. A growl stemmed from his very core. Halting his horse he awaited for the other riders to catch up. Prepared he knew what to say about crossing over territories. He had already an excuse.

“Lord Naraku!” Miroku yelled, his tone was menacing and held a very high threat. He knew of this man, the whole region knew of the carnage he bestowed his own kingdom. High taxes and his people were practically starving.

“Naraku, state your business!” Sango sneered, as she glared at the maniacal man before her, she too hated the Lord. She wanted answers on why he was traveling alone this time of night, especially on King InuTashio's land.

Naraku knew he had to be cunning; he needed to have a good clause. It was too soon for him to be caught killing. No, they don’t know yet, he thought as his lip curled. He was aggravated, and didn’t need to deal with these amateurs. Looking at the pitiful excuse for soldiers, he looked down at Sango.

“My dear, I just needed a run. Sometimes it helps me clear my head.” Naraku said with deceit. However, the look on their faces was comical. They couldn't call him out. He would walk away this night, and he knew it.

Miroku leaned over to Sango, whispering in her ear. “What do you think? Should we let him go, he hasn't done anything wrong…as of yet.”

Sango glared daggers at Naraku, Miroku was right and they had no grounds to hold him. That didn’t mean she trusted him. “Naraku, this night you are free to return to your kingdom.” She turned her horse around, ready to leave and continue onwards toward the palace. Pausing she turned her head around one last time. “If I catch you again, on this hour, I will have just cause.”

Naraku’s lips rounded, he was pleased--no suspicions--he was a free man. Watching Sango retreat, he stared at the male inquisitively. “Well I’m sorry if I have caused a disturbance. Sometimes I like to go for a early morning run…”

“Save it! And get the hell off these lands, before I run my sword through you my lord!” Miroku had enough of this filth before him, unlike Sango he waited until Naraku was out of his view before retreating. He heard steady hoofs heading towards him with a hysterically laughing woman.

“My lover, you surly outdid yourself this time,” she chuckled. Sango couldn’t help but muse over her dear partner, which is until she felt his unwanted attention to her firm rear.

"Smack!"

Miroku rubbed his face, where he was just struck he was sure it would leave behind a mar. Grabbing the reins, he caught up with her. “What in the hell was that for? I touch you all the time? Now I get smacked…Sango what in the world has gotten into you?”

Sango just smiled, as she motioned the horse into a steady gallop, riding away from her lover. She loved his attention, and loved punishing him for it. She was heading back towards the castle, to report to the King that Naraku had indeed been in the vicinity. She pulled back on the reins slightly, slowing the horse down to a steady trot.

Miroku raced up to her. The metal armor clanked together on the horse. “Sango? Why do you look so puzzled? Are you regretting your decision with Naraku?” He smiled seductively, “Or, are you thinking about me and my sinful touch?”

Sango completely ignored his last statement. “Miroku, I have a bad feeling. I think we should check the territory one more time. If Naraku was here,” she paused. “That could only mean trouble.”

Miroku frowned, “So much for a romantic interlude.”

“Miroku this is no time to jest!” Sango snapped.

“Very well, my lovely Sango. I would follow you to the ends of the earth.”

“Yeah, that is until you find a helpless maiden on our scout.” Sango said snidely, but gave away a slight smirk as she rode past him.
Miroku kicked his heels against the beast, urging it to continue up the hill, until coming to a dirt road. Approaching Sango, once again he coughed, “The only fair maiden I see…”

“Don’t even finish that sentence Miroku! I’m not helpless and I’m certainly not a maiden!” Sango snorted then rode off, leaving Miroku in her dust.

“Damn woman!” he said as he brought his hand over his steel plated armor over his chest, acting as if she just broke his heart. No she wasn't an innocent maiden that was for sure, she was his huntress.

The two rode for what seemed like hours. The ride was trying. Thankful that the moon gave some light to show them the way. A red glow illuminated off in the distance. Sango pointed her finger in the direction, of the red glow. “There is no way that’s a camp.”

“I agree, let’s go,” Miroku stated, and then took off after Sango.

The ride was quiet as they approached the ominous glow. They gasped, seeing devastation of the still burning hut. “Look Sango.” Miroku pointed to the ground. He kicked the side of his horse, as he galloped down the hill.

“Wait Miroku!” Sango screamed as she rode after him.

Naraku had made it back to his palace before sunrise. Grabbing a touch he went into his chambers. The royal guards had no proof of the crimes he committed, and was very pleased. Although he knew even if they continued surveying the area, there would still be no proof that he was the one that caused the heinous crimes.

His room was dark a dreary. He threw the black cloak on his four-post bed as he approached the oak table. His satchel lay with the ingredients to finish this potion. He needed revenge; he was planning this spell long before he ran into the maiden.

He was a professional when it came down to manipulation. The fair maiden would make a good queen, he thought. He would find her in three days time, when the moon was at its peak. The spell would then take effect.

With a scowl on his face, he grabbed the garment from the inside of his laced vest. Smelling it, he smiled. Then placed the garment next to his ingredients, it took him many months to gather the entire amount of roots, plants, animals, and reptiles.

Then he followed the spell exactly. Grind the elements, and then set them aside.

A black cauldron hung with an iron latch rested over some red coals, filled with water.

Being gone for a couple hours, he was sure that the water was scalding hot--since it sat over the warm coals. He made sure that his servants didn't let the fire go out.

Opening the black velvet satchel, Naraku dumped the smelly dry concoction, of special herbs into the water. He needed to bring the serum now to a low boil. He added wood to the pit. It didn't take long before he had a medium size fire going.

The potion was coming to a boil. Stirring the potion, slowly and constantly, he silently chanted over the brew. His eyes were closed in complete concentration. He threw in a piece of clothing; he stole from InuYasha a while back--when he once worked in the palace.

“By day, you will remain the same---but at night--you will need a wolf’s sight.”

Shredding some of the cloth, from the mystery girl’s outfit he threw it into the now reddish brown substance, as he constantly stirred it. He would make the girl pay as well.

“By day, you will see as a hawk--but by night--you will remain the same.”

The spell was now complete as the auburn color slowly went to a murky black. Although, as soon as he took a wooden spoon to the dark liquid, he tested it. The liquid was transparent; it looked like ordinary water. He indeed was pleased, for the spell was ready.

It's too bad that I'm the only one, who can break this spell. Naraku laughed silently as he filled a fur canteen with the potion. Then he tightly pushed the cork down. He approached the bed grabbed his cloak and draped it over the canteen. Then headed to bed, for some much needed rest. He would worry about the smaller details tomorrow.
