Chapter 3

Kagome held her hand over her heart as they pulled up into the parking lot of a local pizzeria where most the college students hung out in the evenings. “Well I guess that answers your question don’t it?” Inuyasha laughed as he climbed out of her car and flung the keys in her direction. With out another look in her direction he strode toward the entrance. Kagome sat in a daze for almost five minutes until she finally realized he left her setting there alone. ‘That ass hole!” She fumed in her mind as she got out and slammed her car door shut. Shock filled her face when she realized what she did and immediately leaned over with her ass in the air and her cheek on the door of her mustang cooing apologetically to it for taking her rage out on her precious car.

“Don’t worry baby. I’ll make him pay for driving you like a maniac.” She pouted as she stood, straightened her clothes ignoring all the curious stares she was getting from other patrons passing by and ran her fingers through her un-ruly hair then walked briskly into the restaurant. Her stormy grey eyes scanned across every table and booth until she found him setting alone in a corner. She started to walk over until she realized he was staring at something. She followed his gaze until she saw the ‘someone’ he was looking at. She blinked a couple of times and looked back at him just to make sure he was actually looking in that direction. His eyes held something akin to desire or want. She raised her eyebrow as she looked back over at the dark haired girl who looked similar to her and it suddenly dawned on her that must be the Kikyo he mistook her for.

Kagome’s eyes flowed up and down the tall girl in her tight blue jeans and long sleeved shirt that she had tied around her waist with a scrutinizing glare. Her long waist length silky black hair was straight as a board and she wore nice fashionable glasses. She had to admit the girl’s body looked perfect. She was tall and lean with curves in all the right places. To top it off she was very pretty even with her glasses. Kagome bit her lip in a pout. ‘I don’t look like her.’ She concluded firmly. ‘I have better taste in clothes.’ Kagome mused to herself and with a snort walked over to where Inuyasha was seated.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Inuyasha took a seat at his usual spot as he watched the girl of his dreams waiting on other tables. It was true that they had known each other since they were five but in all that time they had remained only friends. He wanted so much more. She was the only girl he had really been able to talk to and she was the only girl that ever paid any attention to him. He wanted to tell her so badly how he felt but inside he just knew she would reject him like she did in high school.

(Flashback)
“Kikyo you know how I feel about you? How could you do this?” An 18 year old Inuyasha confronted his long time friend. “How can you just throw away all our plans like this?” He pleaded angrily.

“Oh come on Inu. We were kids when we talked about all that stuff and we’re officially grown ups now. You know I don’t feel the same about you. We’re just friends. If you want a girl friend then you need to work on it. Look at you for heaven’s sake. You still dress like your mother puts your clothes out for you every morning. I want some one who is dangerous and exciting. Not a nerdy momma’s boy.” Kikyo laughed cruelly at him. “Come talk to me when you grow up.” She said as she went off with her girl friends to party after graduation.
(End of Flashback)

That had been over two years ago but he could remember that day plainly and it still broke his heart. It made him ecstatic when he found out they were going to the same college. He just knew the fates meant for them to be together now. All he had to do was convince her he was what she needed in a man. The problem was he didn’t know where to begin. So he came here almost ever night she worked to ogle her while she flirted with guys and only acknowledged him as a good friend. He sighed heavily and removed his glasses to wipe the remnants of the tears he was holding back. When he looked up again he was met with a white button front silk shirt. He blinked a couple of times then leaned back to clear his vision. There stood Kagome with her hands on her hips, an angry glare in her eyes and tapping her high heeled foot impatiently. He smiled at her arrogantly.

“It’s about time you got out of the car bitch. I thought you were going to roust in there like a hen.” He snickered when she held back a screech with her fisted hands held firmly at her sides. She was kind of cute when she was mad and she sure was fun to tease.

“Scoot over jerk. We have business to discuss.” She hissed as she stood next to his seat.

“No way. Set over there. The last thing I want is for people to think we’re on a date.” He scowled and motioned toward the other side of the booth. She flopped down and pursed her lips ready to respond when a high but soft female voice interrupted them.

“I see you have someone with you tonight Inu. You want the usual?” It was the same girl Kagome was sure he had been staring at. She watched as Inuyasha lowered his eyes to the table and blushed.

“Hey Kikyo. Yeah the usual.” He looked at her from the corner of his eye but the girl didn’t even notice as she jotted down his order on her pad. Kagome watched him closely feeling a bit sorry for him. It was so obvious he like the girl. She was snapped out of her thoughts when asked a question.

“And what for you?” Kikyo asked sweetly. Kagome looked at her startled.

“Oh the same is ok.” She returned Kikyo’s smile.

“Ok I’ll be right back with your drinks.” She said and waltz away quickly. Kagome watched as Inuyasha’s eyes followed her until she disappeared past the kitchen doors. They sat in uncomfortable silence until Kikyo returned with their cokes and set them down on the table. She looked back and forth between the two then frowned slightly. “Hey don’t be so pouty.” She said and Kagome looked at her to see if she was talking to her or Inuyasha. Unfortunately Kikyo was looking straight at her. “Look he’s a great guy once you get past the rudeness.” She giggled and ruffled his hair. He pushed her hands away with a growl.

“Stop Kikyo. Now ain’t the time.” He said harshly. She grinned wrinkling her nose at him then turned to walk away. Kagome watched her as she went from table to table talking and flirting with other guys. Inuyasha sat across from her scowling with his eyes glued on the table. Kagome was really feeling uncomfortable with this situation.

“You don’t want me here do you?” She said just loud enough for him to hear.

“No but it didn’t stop you did it? Are you always so rude or do you just expect people to jump when you scream help?” He said sarcastically. She bit her lip and put her hands on her lap with her head hung.

“I’m sorry but if I wasn’t desperate I wouldn’t have bugged you so much.” She quickly wiped a tear from her cheek as it slid down. “I just didn’t know what else to do. I can’t afford to take that class again. It was hard enough to pass it the first time. It will put me behind another year.” She chewed on her lip again fighting back the tears. “Sorry.” She whispered as she stood to walk away before she broke down and cried right there. Suddenly a hand held her wrist stopping her. She looked down at the arm attached to the hand to find it connected to Inuyasha. He still wasn’t looking at her.

“You might as well stay and at least eat since I got it for you.” He said lowly. She smiled weakly and slid back into her seat across from him. After a couple of minutes she sipped her drink savoring the coolness on her suddenly dry throat. “So you gonna tell me what exactly is your problem or are you just gonna eat my food and set there sulking.” He said looked at her. She couldn’t help but be trapped in those golden orbs for a few seconds before gathering her thoughts. Slowly she went over everything that had transpired over the past few days. He listened patiently with out saying a word until she was finished but by that time Kikyo had returned and placed two large bowls of ramen in front of them. Kagome blinked a couple of times then a smile spread across her face. She didn’t even wait a second longer before picking up her chopsticks and began devouring the succulent noodles. Inuyasha watched her amused by her reaction.
“Don’t like ramen much do you?” He chuckled when she almost choked on her mouth full realizing she must look rather starved or something. She grinned around her mouth full and finished chewing before answering.

“Umm...like wouldn’t be the word I would use.” She smiled and took another bite. “ I was just surprised at your choice in the usual. I was expecting pizza or a burger or something.” He chuckled.

“Well no one ever said I was ordinary.” He laughed slightly then looked at her seriously. “So what do I get out of all this if I help you. That is if I can. I still have to look at it to see if I can salvage any of it.” He said then continued eating.

“I was expecting you to ask for a years worth of sex or something perverted like that.” She giggled when he choked on his noodles. He gulped his coke quickly to wash it down.

“Damn that was unexpected.” He blushed. “But if your offering?” He winked then chuckled at her glare but sobered when Kikyo walked by. His eyes followed her until she stopped at a table full of football players whom she flirted with mercilessly. He shook his head then went back to his meal. Kagome watched him with curiosity.

“Why don’t you ask her out?” She asked innocently. He looked back over at Kikyo then put his chop sticks back on the table. He never admitted what happened that day to anyone. Not even Sesshomaru. He just closed himself off from having any contact with any other girls. Why he felt compelled to tell Kagome was beyond him but the look in her eyes made him think that maybe he could trust her. She was very up front and honest when he asked about her so maybe he could take a chance.

“I ain’t her type.” He replied quietly. Kagome sat back and frowned.

“Who says?” She furrowed her eyebrows. He knew what she was thinking. She would probably feel sorry for him then leave like all the others once they found out he was ‘so in love’ with Kikyo that he would do anything to have her for his own.

“She did.” He replied emotionlessly as he looked her in the eye ready for her realization. Kagome looked over at Kikyo then back at him.

“Bull shit.” She replied and took another bite of her ramen. He blinked in shock but didn’t know what to say. “If someone can’t accept you for who you are then you are wasting your time. At least that’s the way I look at relationships. You can’t really tell who the right one is until you try. So how do you know if someone is your type until you really get to know them on that level. I mean, sure there are those people you just aren’t attracted to, like that girl Kanna for example, but if you have something in common with someone and they seem interested back then why not give it a try. You can usually tell after the first few dates if you aren’t compatible enough to make a relationship out of it or not.” She said sagely then continued eating. He sat there in silence contemplating if she even understood the situation or not . Then again he didn’t exactly tell her their back ground either.

“What makes you an expert on the subject?” He snorted after a few more minutes of self contemplation. She looked at him startled.

“I’m not saying I am. That is just the way I see it.” She began but was cut off by someone calling to her from across the room.

“Hey Kagome!” Waved a sandy haired youth from the doorway then he headed their way. Everyone in the restaurant that cared to look turned to stare at them.

“Of course there are those who just can’t take no for an answer.” She said with a forced smile. “Hello Hojo. How have you been?” She smiled sweetly. He grinned happily and held out a brown bag toward her.

“I’m great. But your grandfather said you were under the weather lately with rheumatism so my mom sent this for you.” He pushed the bag into her hands not paying attention to the blush on her face. ‘Thanks gramps.’ She fumed mentally as she pushed the bag against the back wall next to her purse. “Mind of I join you guys?” He asked and took a step closer to Kagome. She was about to make up an excuse when she suddenly found Inuyasha plastered to her side pushing her closer to the wall.

“Sure take my seat. We were just getting to know each other better so I’ll set over here.” The smile on his face was too happy for Kagome. She knew something was up. Her eyes narrowed as they met his. He leaned over to whisper in her ear.

“You owe me for this.” He said lowly then nipped her ear playfully making her blush. ‘God she smells good.’ He thought as he inhaled the scent of her hair but forced himself to pay attention to the guy across the table. “Inuyasha.” He offered his hand to the stunned boy across from them.

“Oh, Hojo.” He replied blushing as he shook the offered hand. “So you guys known each other long?” He asked with worry in his brown eyes.

“Not too long.” Inuyasha wrapped an arm around Kagome possessively. “But long enough.” He smiled widely when she paled.

“So your friends?” Hojo asked with a little bit of jealousy in his tone.

“Closer then most you might say.” Inuyasha implied. Kagome was ready to turn and dump her coke in his lap when she saw that white haired girl from his apartment walking their way.

“Oh Inuyasha. There you are.” Kanna shouted happily making said boy cringe. Kagome turned and smiled at him sweetly.

“More like really good friends.” She said just before capturing his lips with hers in a saucy passionate kiss. Inuyasha’s hands instinctively came up placing one on her waist the other laced in the hair on the back of her head pulling her closer as the kiss deepened even more. Both Hojo and Kanna blinked stupidly at the two all but making out in the booth.

“Well I see you’re busy Kagome. Call me and we’ll go out sometime.” Hojo said blushing as he stood and left the building. Kanna didn’t say a thing instead she stomped her foot and stormed out angrily.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Unbeknownst the them, another set of brown eyes was watching from across the room witnessing the kiss. They glared at the dark haired girl angrily.

Slowly the two pulled apart and looked into each other’s eyes. Kagome lowered herself back into her seat unable to say anything. Inuyasha couldn’t take his eyes off her. But after a few minutes he got a strange look on his face. “Did that guy just tell you to call him even after witnessing that?” He asked incredulously. Kagome started to laugh and nodded.

“He isn’t the brightest light bulb out there.” She giggled as they laughed together. Once they calmed down they finished eating.

“Ok I would say we’re even.” Inuyasha stated and put his arm over the back of the booth stretching.

“Yeah I guess so but what about my problem?” She frowned and she stirred her watered down coke with her straw.

“Sex for the next year sounded pretty good to me.” He said calmly earning an elbow in his side. He ‘oofed’ holding his bruised side then laughed. “I wasn’t serious.” He laughed at her frown that soon turned to a smile. For the first time in ages he was actually having fun with someone and it made him feel good.

“I gotta pee.” Kagome giggled. He slid out letting her up and watched her hips sway back and forth as she walked around the corner toward the restrooms. He also noticed the way several guys checked her out as she passed them with out even giving them a glance. So she wasn’t a flirt nor was she vain. To top it off she was with him and that made him feel special I a way. He had to admit she was great to be around. He also thought she was pretty. ‘Who am I kidding? She’s gorgeous. Any guy would give his left nut to go out with her.’ He mused but he wasn’t about to tell her that. He looked around for Kikyo so he could get his check figuring maybe they could go catch a movie or something. His golden eyes scanned the room but he didn’t see her. He figured she was probably in the kitchens so he sat back down to wait.

Kagome leaned against the counter to check her make up in the mirror after washing her hands when the bathroom door opened. She glanced at the image standing just behind her to the left. Kikyo glared at her with her arms crossed over her chest. Her red lips pursed into a flat line. Kagome turned around and regarded her warily wondering what she wanted. After the two sized each other up so to speak Kikyo relaxed her stance a bit. “So how long have you two known each other?” She asked watching Kagome’s body language. Kagome almost rolled her eyes but knew better. She had dealt with girls like her before. For someone who doesn’t care enough about him to date him she sure seemed interested in his life. She decided to play it out and find out just what her game was.

“Not long but long enough.” Kagome answer with a smile remembering Inuyasha’s comment earilier. “You known him long?” She asked fishing for information.

“Yeah since we were kids.” Kikyo looked her up and down again. “You could say we have a history.” She replied cooly with a snide smile.

“Oh yes he told me that you’re really close friends. But as they say history is in the past and the future is in front of us. We should all plan it carefully.” Kagome replied with a smile of her own when Kikyo’s fell from her lips. ‘Goad me, go ahead and try bitch.’ Kagome thought to herself but never let her features show her real thoughts.

“Why are you dating him?” Kikyo blurted out. Kagome raised an eyebrow.

“Well let’s see, he’s witty, smart, fun to be around, good looking, makes me laugh and he loves ramen as much as I do. Oh, and he’s a great kisser.” She counted the reasons off on her fingers leaving out the true reason they were there that night. Kikyo chewed on her bottom lip with a frown.

“You aren’t playing with him right? He gets hurt easily.” She said seriously. Kagome blinked. She wasn’t prepared for that one. ‘Maybe Kikyo really did care about him.’ She thought.

“No why would I play around with him?” She asked slowly.

“Well all girls want to be with him because he has money. Isn’t that why someone like you...” Kikyo’s eyes looked her up and down again. Kagome couldn’t help but look at herself with a frown. ‘What is wrong with me?’ She hissed in her mind. “Would be interested in someone like him? I mean look at him. He isn’t exactly the most articulate person in a conversation. He’s rude, obnoxious, callous, those glasses and cloths are so out of fashion.” Kikyo finished wrinkling her nose. It was all Kagome could do to keep from punching her.

“No, I don’t need his money when I have my own and besides, I like the way he looks. It’s what makes him unique. Anyway he’s taking me shopping later so I was planning on talking to him about his little problems.” Kagome reassured Kikyo with a smile as she made to walk past her but Kikyo caught her arm stopping her.

“Why haven’t I seen you with him before?” She asked with narrowed eyes.

“Well we mostly go out for lunches during school but he said he wanted to bring me to his favorite place tonight. So he brought me here.” Kagome answered with a roll of her eyes.

“You mean he brought you on that lame excuse for a ride? You have got to be kidding me.” Kikyo laughed. Kagome was fuming in side at her remark but didn’t let it show. He was proud of that thing even if it was as piece of shit in her own opinion but this girl was supposed to be his friend. So she blinked at her confused and furrowed her eye brows.

“I didn’t know a 2005 cobra was considered a lame excuse for a ride.” Kagome said innocently. Kikyo stopped laughing and stared at her like she had two heads.

“He doesn’t have a car. I would know.” Kikyo said matter o factly with a smug look.

“Oh well he just bought it but I liked the color so much he said he would let me have it and get him another one. Isn’t he just the sweetest thing?” Kagome got a dreamy look in her eyes as she smiled happily. “If you want to see it look out the window when we leave. I think he was ready when I had to potty.” Kagome said in her giggly high school voice and trotted out of the room before Kikyo could come up with anymore questions. As quick as her heels would allow she walked toward him as she pulled her car keys out of her purse with out Kikyo seeing. He stood with a smile but then frowned as his eyes looked behind her. She shoved the keys in his hand and leaned up hugging him close. His free arm went around her waist as he stared at Kikyo coming in their direction from where Kagome had been. “Just go along with it ok.” She whispered then pecked him on the cheek. He released her when she stepped back.

“Um...Kikyo could I have my check?” He asked when his long time friend came up to him with her hands on her hips. She looked from him to Kagome then back again.

“Inuyasha did you buy a car?” She asked flatly. He looked down in his hand and instantly knew what Kagome was getting at.

“Well yeah.” He said and held up the keys in front of him. Kikyo’s eyes widened for a second then she reached into her apron and pulled out his ticket.

“Are you really going out with her?” She asked softly. He looked at Kagome who gave a little nod of her head. She had a some what constipated look that twisted her face strangely.

“Um..yes?” He said and was glad it was the right answer when Kagome’s stressed look left her face. Kikyo slapped the ticket in his hand and turned to leave. He grabbed her arm pulling her around. “Is some thing wrong with that?” He asked seriously. Kikyo looked back at Kagome who waved at her then she turned back to Inuyasha with a smile.

“No not at all. Just remember where you belong.” She fixed the collar on his shirt then pecked him on the cheek. The second Kikyo was gone from site he turned and looked at Kagome.

“What the hell is going on?” He asked confused.

“Oh nothing much but now I know how I’m going to pay you back for helping me.” She smiled sweetly.

“I don’t know if I like that look on your face.” He admitted hesitantly.

“Oh don’t be a woos.” She said as she snatched the ticket from his hands and glanced at it. She quickly dug into her purse and pulled out the bills to cover it. “Come on we got work to do.” She insisted then sashayed toward the door. He looked back down at the cash she left on the counter for the cashier then trotted after her more confused then ever.
