Chapter 3: If only just a little

__________)o(__________

Her skin chilled to the bone, and the hair on the back of her neck stood on end, like spikes reaching out to prick anything that dared graze it is sharp points. Her eyes clouded over with a terrifying realization, as she peered into the bone eaters well.

Winter was taking her sweet, sweet revenge for whatever Kagome had done to scorn her. It was as if her frost bitten skin, split to the core chapped lips, and cracked dry skin were not enough. However these small unconvinces were the least of her problems compared to the trouble she was staring in the eyes now.

The well seemed to taunt Kagome. It glowed bright as a few stray rays of moon seeped through the thick clouds , and reflected off of the snow that filled the well to the brim…just as it would have, had she been traveling though it now.

However she knew that she was not going to be able to travel back home though it any time soon…

Kagome slid to her knees, and let her head fall lifeless to the frozen palms of her hands. She allowed her forehead to rest uncomfortably against the ice covered wood of the well, as tears slid down her rosy red cheeks and slip into the snow, leaving numerous small holes in their wake.

Kagome’s mind was numb, just as her body. Her tears had no real attachment, but they fell none the less. It was almost instinct now for her body to allow her unshed tears to fall. Her heart seemed to be the one in charge now. Her brain was incapable of thinking, and perhaps that was a good thing for the time being. She was not sure she wanted the pleasure of thought, for she knew where they would lead had they gotten the chance.

Silence…

Something Sesshoumaru was glad to have after a long straining battle.

The clamor of swords, breaking of bones, and cries of fury were not his idea of relaxation as many who have seen him thought. Battle to him, was a way of protecting his honor and land… nothing else.

He stole a glance at Rin, wandering if his last though was fully accurate. Perhaps he was protecting more than just those two things.

He sighed.

The fire hummed, and lighted a small fraction of the trees around them, creating a warmth, and comfort. The stars flickered in the sky, and soft breathing filled his ears. He took another look at his ward, curled in ball across from him sound asleep…finally.

He could not help but let another sigh slip from his lips. However, not unnoticed this time around.

“My lord, is there something the matter?”

Sesshoumaru did not bother to look to his retainer. He merely disregarded him turning his head slightly to his right, listening to the sounds of the forest rather than Rin. She had given him enough torture. After he did not let Kagome stay, she threw a fit, and did not speak for the rest of their walk to find another camp. Really her heart was just too big.

Jaken was no fool, and did not pursue his question any further. He shifted to a comfortable position, and fell to sleep quickly under his lord’s protection.

Sesshoumaru’s mind wondered off to the happenings of the battle with Naraku as his eyes strayed to Rin for the third time that night so far. It was becoming a habit.

Inuyasha and his friends had all fallen, all except one…the miko…

Sesshoumaru’s eyes lifted to the night sky, as he allowed a once pity for his half brother and his unfortunate fate. Though he was almost sure that the battle would take Inuyasha’s life, he did not expect the rest of his comrades to fall after him. The only one who was able to cheat death was that damned girl…yet she did not look as if death were such a bad possibility.

He traced the burned flesh beneath his cloths with the tips of his fingers, gently. If it had caused him any pain, you would not have been able to see it written on his face.

She had almost killed him! Had he been about a foot farther to the right, he would have taken the blow of her damn arrow square in the heart. Luckily this was not his time.

He let the corners of his lips curl into a slight smirk.

Every time was not his time…death could never take his life. He simply was not strong enough to fight against Sesshoumaru’s will.

His smirk faded along with the moon behind the few clouds that darkened that night.

His eyes closed, as the fire dimmed, and only the hot orange coals gave warmth against the cold howling wind.

He took in a deep breath, and a tangy sort of pungent scent filled his nostrils. A scent he was all to accustom to catching on the wind this night.

Blood…her blood…

Another inhale…

The blood was stale, and he knew it at that moment that it was from the battle earlier that night. The smell of death was strong, and he mentally cringed. The scent of death was intoxicating in all the wrong ways. But for some reason he was drawn to it every time it was near. Perhaps it was instinct, but it could have been more.

So she was near…however she was also most likely dead.

Warmth wraps it way around her, but she dared not open her eyes. She could feel a cool breeze caress the reddened skin of her abused cheeks. It was heavenly…being lifted so high…She felt as if she was being held by a pair of strong arms, soaring through the clouds. Her hair swished around her, and the air she breathed in was crisp. She felt weightless…As if all the pain she felt was being numbed by some sort of new drug.

Who knew death could feel so good?

Then it was over…the feeling came to a halt, and she felt the cold hard ground beneath her again. She could feel that snow soak into her skin like lotion. Her heart sank. Had death decided that she had not endured enough pain?

“Please…take me…”

Her voice was pleading, and she could only hope that it was desperate enough for death to reconsider her as his next victim.

Yet, still there was nothing, and she drifted into another dreamless sleep.

Kagome mind sprang to life when a pair of cold hands invaded her cheeks. She quickly swatted them from her person, quickly rising to a sitting position. Her breaths were short, and heavy. But they soon stopped completely. Her eyes were captivated by a pair of golden orbs. It was a bottomless pool, and she was lost in them for minuets.

That empty feeling she felt when looking into his eyes came to an end when Sesshoumaru turned his gaze elsewhere.

“Kagome!”

Then the cold hands returned, but she did not bother to push them from her. She was still too ruffled at his presence.

Rin frowned, and looked to her Lord with pained eyes.

“Lord Sesshoumaru, I think she is sick…”

He gave a slight nod, but he never returned her stare. Rin turned back to Kagome with sympathy in her eyes. Then it vanished like it was only a mirage. A smile adorned her soft features.

“It is a good thing Lord Sesshoumaru found you. Now we can take care of you Kagome. You will feel better. I promise.”

Kagome let a smile graze her lips, though it hurt. What she would give to have carmex…
